I didn't plan to go to WalMart, but I wanted to observe the zoo just prior to a blizzard. Everything was basically back to pre-Covid normal, the entire store was basically fully stocked, or overstocked, with the exceptions of beef, small bottles of cooking oil (many, many gallon jugs), small containers of yogurt (many, many tubs), and cheap canned cat food (plenty of boutique stuff).

8 Lives Seafood Platter Pate is the only inexpensive thing left. Some shoppers told me no cat will eat that stuff. Maybe the cats know it could kill them.

And, I'm glad I went. Campbell's Cream of Mushroom (and Cream of Chicken) condensed soup were .25 a can. I picked up about an 18 month supply.
Wowww!!
Lucky score!!

It sure was. For pantry canned goods, I basically buy cream of mushroom soup, tomato paste (I just picked up a year's supply), and albacore in water. That's it. I'm at two out of three, with tuna "maybe" going on sale just before Lent.

All other foods are fresh, frozen, bagged, boxed, and the odd jar.

I haven't received any notice here in the desert. Do you have Southwest Gas? I did see a 6 % rate increase went into effect starting this month.

I have Southwest gas here in Las Vegas. I'm on their equal pay plan so I pay the same every month. Last year it was $17 a month. 2022 it went up to $27!! My usage is very light and I know I am not using that much more. $10 is not a lot but that much of an increase is ridiculous.

I went to Aldi’s in suburban Memphis yesterday afternoon.

They had Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken soups for 53 cents - which I thought was really good until I read about Banquetquaint’s quarter a can purchase.

They were well stocked when I was there. No glaring holes or shortages, except iI didn’t see peanut butter. Maybe I just missed it.

According to my utility bill, the cost of natural gas was $1.99 a year ago and on current bill was $4.60. My budget plan has gone from $81 in January of 2020 to $114 this month. MidAmerican has said to expect our bills to increase from 46% to 96% this winter. MidAmerican has not issued a warning of shortages although I understand that has happened in other parts of the country. At this point I'm just thankful that I have heat and can manage the bill.

Our local paper always has a section with blips from past years. This week from 1/17/1912 report that there was 20 consecutive days of below zero temperatures with the lowest being -37º. I'm also thankful we have not had such extremes although we've regularly been below zero most nights.

I've accumulated a fairly long shopping list for Walmart although mostly non-food items. I do buy a few food items there and especially like their French bread. I bring the bread home and immediately cut the whole loaf and put two pieces in a sandwich baggie and then the baggies back into the bag the bread comes in and into the freezer. It keeps for at least a month. Before it would always mold before I could use the entire loaf. The price of a loaf is still $1. Most of the non-food items were on the list for my last shopping trip and were unavailable. I'm hoping I'll have better luck next time I shop.

$17 a month?!?!? OMG!! We're looking at going from an average of $200/month to over $500!! :bhd:
Mine is out of sight also. Electric cost me 500 mo. Water 1000 every 2 months. So if that increase is right I will be paying 1500 a month for utilities. I don't know how people are paying these bills. They are letting all the trees die in these working class neighborhoods.
My neighbor sends a small payment every month and she gets a once a year payment from some program and the electric forgives some of the bill because she is on oxygen. I can't imagine living like that but it's not looking good for any of us except the wealthy.

Went shopping tonight (it was our date night!). No bananas, lots of meat (but who can afford it), everything else seemed well stocked, except no Nyquil/Dayquil/off brand similar med. Prices keep creeping or bounding up. I buy mostly sale items, so I do OK. When I had gone to a different store Friday night after work, it just felt.... off.

Tonight, I saw a lot of groups shopping....very few single shoppers unless it was single men. I don't know if people just don't feel as safe going out past dark (it was only like 5:30) or what.

I quit going out alone after dark a good ten years ago. I was visiting where I moved from and ran over to the walmart I'd shopped at for years and felt very uncomfortable there, outside not in the store. Since I didn't live there anymore I'd never been back even in the day time. I use to go there all the time, even in the evening.

God is good all the time

We (Indiana, central/north of Indy) are expecting a pretty ugly storm this week starting Tuesday -Friday....ice, a lot of snow, sleet, potentially being the kind that will keep many home.
I’m going to wait until tomorrow morning to get last minute top off items. Kroger was so bad yesterday I set down the two items out of the few I needed and walked out.
They were packed to begin with but had...only three cashiers and not a single bagger in there.
The self checkout was winding all the way to the floral area. After working all morning no way was I standing in that mess.
Today being a Sunday will not be any better.

Getting the same storm. Just hope there is no ice

This too shall pass.
This is from a clothing store, Kohl's, so not groceries, but definitely interesting. My oldest daughter and her hubby went to return something today -- Dallas Fort Worth, Texas, area. Her note and the pictures are below.

A little observation:

Had to go to Kohls to do an Amazon return. The husband needs a belt, and they give you a coupon when you do a return this way, so we wandered around the store. It’s been 3(?) months since I was in there. It was crowded with racks last time, and a bunch of clearance. Today? Widely spaced racks, gaps where racks aren’t, and stock spread thinly to make it look like there was stuff. This is mens but the whole store is like this. I need an interview suit… flat nothing for dressy women’s clothing, no slacks or blazers.

(N MN) I've only been going to town about every two weeks, and today was the day - Walmart pickup, meat store, truck gas, post office, etc. Walmart again had everything I ordered for curbside - no problem. The usual: fresh vegetables/fruit, milk, eggs, bread, hot dog buns, whole wheat and rye flour, lard in the 1 lb tubs, canned refried beans, cooking soup (cream of mushroom/chicken), paper goods, Diet and caffeine-free Coke, Gatorade. Even Valentine colored M&M's! :) Life is good.

The meat store still seems to be keeping prices down with enough sale items in the store every week to put together good meals. This week, country-style pork ribs-$1.69/lb, 10# lean burger bags-$3.99/lb, porketta steaks-$2.49/lb, bulk pork sausage-$1.99/lb. I figured it was time to replace some of the stuff I've been using out of the freezer.

Oh, and gas was 3.19/gal for unleaded.

At work today (state college food service) the Coke vendor showed up, not sure why given how little he delivered. For the second delivery in a row we received no coca cola, no diet coke, no Fanta in any flavor. Again this is the main coke distributor in the entire state and we got no soda from them. The last delivery we received less than 20% of what was ordered. More than a little frustrating. This is in western OK, distributor is coming out of OKC

Smith's in NE NV today. Pasta and ramen continue to be very thin. Not much vinegar in the gallon jugs. They had store brand saltines; very little of other brands. The refrigerated section finally has tube dough again--those shelves were filled. They continue to be horrible about rotating the yogurt stock. The prices keep increasing. Fortunately, they continue to put a lot on clearance, so that helps.

Went shopping at Walmart, today. NE MS. Store looked good. Some things were thin, but still available. I had to make a few substitutions on some brand names, but all in all, it was a good trip for another 2 weeks. The saltine crackers were very thin. Zesta brand is all they had. We like Premium brand, but Zesta will have to do.

An offbrand quart jar of mayonaise was...wait for it...drumroll...taps...

$7.99.
Like bloody hel. I'll be using a recipe and making my own. Thanks Marie! I see you posted a recipe in Granny's Kitchen.
Offbrand, here was 1.89 last summer (basically the only time I use it). I barely noticed that the now smaller print listed it at 30 ounces, rather than the previous 32.

At my WalMart, they no longer stack the saltines. They slide the large cardboard box off the pallet onto the bottom shelf, cut out the front, and let the cracker wolves at it.

That's the way it was at my Walmart, yesterday. All the saltine cracker space was taken up with large cardboard boxes with the front cut out on the bottom shelf. The only saltines they had, though, was Zesta, and only half a cardboard box of those left.

I was at a small chain store (Weis) in MD yesterday. They had been out of the wet/canned cat food for a LONG time. But yesterday it was about 60-70% full! Mostly "Friskies" from what I remember, but all kinds of varieties were on the shelf. I don't have a cat, but this thread makes me swing by that section of the store every time I'm there to see how it is. So the cat food is apparently out there, somewhere. Just finding it is the hard part.
I was able to get wet cat food from Amazon. Store shelves here are bare.

Picked up a Walmart order yesterday north central Oklahoma for 64 items got all but 2. Pasta appears to be in short supply here also. Really surprised they had almost everything as the parking lot has been packed the last three days with the forecast of ice, sleet, and up to 6 or more inches of snow here.

Local Casey's had 87 octane unleaded go from $3.35 to $3.45 to $3.55 in the last week. Not really shortage related, but definitely changing prices. Also noted a slow down at this store of the Biden I did that decals on the pumps.
