I've shopped at Aldi for over 20 years and never have I found bad canned veggies or really anything else. Anything that I had a problem with was always replaced with minimal hassle. It is not unusual to find a bit of stem in green beans, a bit of cob in corn or a bit of pod in peas of any brand.

I generally do not buy groceries at Walmart, only sometimes at HyVee. I go to Aldi and then stop at Fareway for things Aldi doesn't carry or as of late are out of. Local store is generally well stocked in you don't mind paying a premium price which I do occasionally just to avoid a trip to town.
Oh no I didn’t mean Aldi is BAD now, maybe it was just the one we had at that time(?)
I adore Aldi and find their variety stellar in comparison to, as WELL as in price to the chain groceries.

The times I referred to were wayyy back in the middle/early 2000’s. We have several Aldi stores here now, two within five minutes me. I feel very lucky to have them!

Went to the large Tractor Supply here in Hilo Hawaii yesterday. They had one bag of my dogs favorite Taste of the Wild food. I bought it. The store was almost empty and the guy said he hadn't received a shipment in a long time and didn't know when he would get restocked.
I also needed a new chest freezer , my 9 cubic ft one was on it's last leg .I bought the last small freezer in town 7 cubic ft at the PX.
Home Depot didn't have any and the PX only had the one small one .

I went to Aldi this morning and the empty shelves was the worse I had seen it since the shutdown. The snacks, crackers, cookies, and cereal probably had half the shelves empty.

Canned goods were pretty good. Drinks a third empty. Produce was good. The bunkers with frozen like their special stuff they get occasionally wasn't full at all...what was there was just spread out to make it look full.

Frozen meat over half empty.

Canned biscuits only one variety and no cinnamon rolls.

No white sliced bread of any kind....only whole wheat. A few hotdog and hamburger buns.

I mentioned it to the cashier and she said it is all a hit and miss now on what they get.

Symbolically, white sliced bread is what's wrong with America.

I noticed today that Folger's Half Caff is $8.45 at DG, paid $7 a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes it would go on sale for $5 but probably will be higher now. One of those items I HAVE to have. I can do without a lot of things but coffee isn't one of them. Aldi's only had a couple of types to choose from and I wasn't chancing it.

My parents started shopping at Aldi back in the 1980's, there were some quality control issues in the first couple of years but they quickly got that under control and I have yet to see them sell a bad product yet.

What my mil brought home was a very long time ago, like I said. I’d not even heard of them so had no way to know any differently
I love aldi now!

If anyone is looking for a freezer, we ordered one from Costco which was delivered today. 22 cubic feet. It’s great!

My next trip to the store likely won't be for a few weeks. On the agenda is looking on the food packages of what I buy, as to country of origin. If the shelf is getting depleted and the product is made in Canada...

Just picked up 4 nice T-bone steaks for $9.99 a pound. Was at the local IGA in the closest small town to our home place. This is the first time they have been below $14 a pound since the summer

last week they had very nice top sirloin for the same price and I put several in the freezers.

since the Covid shortages started the Walmart’s and other big box stores have had all kinds of shortages all across the board and the prices on everything has continued to go higher and in many cases the sizes for the price is less.

All through this that local IGA has almost always had things but they might be different brands and their pricing has usually be much higher

I went to Walmart for a quick grocery trip today. The meat and pasta aisles were sparse. My son requested that I get some Velvetta shells and cheese for the microwave. I refused to pay $5.49 for four cups at Harris Teeter. The only box they had left at Walmart was on the very top shelf. I’m a tall woman, but I couldn’t quite get it. A nice man came along and helped me get it down. I noticed that the frozen potatoes were almost empty. What surprised me the most was the lack of eggs! All the had were liquid egg cartons and hard boiled eggs. This cooler is usually full of eggs!

Part of Wally World problem is not enough drivers. They used a lot of independents to pull there trailers. Lots of other loads paying lot more. Heard that one of our missing trucks was still at the dock. Thought it had been taken and another empty in its place. Two days later they get ready to load it and low and behold it was already full They thought it had been delivered and returned for another load.

I went to Target today (sprang for their exclusive Instapot -- I'm making pho & other goodies). Oh, goodness! Talk about thin inventory. I will give them credit for spreading out items, but everywhere I looked, shelves were thin across all departments. In grocery, frozen food was especially hard hit.

Produce was also lacking and what there was didn't look good. I was very glad I didn't need to shop for groceries -- I was mostly walking around for exercise at that point since it was still in the teens outside.
Our Targets get trucks every day, but I would bet not a lot came in.

In contrast, I also stopped at Fareway briefly. They still had decent-looking oranges, radishes, etc., so I got a small bag of fresh fruit and veggies. I have canned, as well, but I'm trying to eat fresh as long as I can.
Just for kicks, I looked at their frozen food -- lots of holes! What remained was weird organic products and several off-off brands of pizzas I'd never heard of before.

If I had been grocery shopping, I would've been OK. They still had a good stock of basic items. I would've had to make my own frozen meals for the week, but there was plenty of meat, rice, pasta, and so on.

the wet cat food shortage is really gaining traction now people are complaining on social media.

I was at a small chain store (Weis) in MD yesterday. They had been out of the wet/canned cat food for a LONG time. But yesterday it was about 60-70% full! Mostly "Friskies" from what I remember, but all kinds of varieties were on the shelf. I don't have a cat, but this thread makes me swing by that section of the store every time I'm there to see how it is. So the cat food is apparently out there, somewhere. Just finding it is the hard part.

My DH HATES Aldi with a passion, and he feels the same about Walmart. He doesn't care if I shop there, but he's not going in.
I’m the same way about Walmart!
I’ll go for a few targeted items and I do like their prices, of course, but I just get the heebie jeebies about their meat.
I think that goes back to high school when Walmart’s first came to our area. It was filthy, dirty everywhere you looked and smelled.

Only the poorest shopped there. Not that we were wealthy lol but Walmart had a really bad reputation back then.
It’s 100% different nowadays. Those early impressions stuck.

You've got a Meijer, Psychgirl. When I lived in Cols (3 Meijer stores!) I never went to Wally World, either. I didn't need to.

Meijer just came around here in ...oh... I’d guess in the 90’s?
I was in high school way before that when the first Walmart in town opened.

I like Meijer! They still don’t have one in my hometown. I think there’s one about 15 minutes drive.

At Home Depot, it looks like the price of Miracle-Gro fertilizer went from $13 to $15 for one of the larger containers.

At Smith's today, things looked better than last week. The freezer section was well stocked, even potatoes. There were only a few holes. I forgot to check the cat food aisle. There were 2 containers of Kraft Parmesan; plenty of store brand. Vinegar was full. The pasta was thin. Ramen was at about 25%, but DH said that's pretty normal around here. He says the miners live on it. There was no store-brand sausage and only store-brand saltine crackers. Quart containers of yogurt were thin. Oh, and I saw refrigerated tubes of cinnamon rolls, but no other tubes of bread dough products.

I didn't plan to go to WalMart, but I wanted to observe the zoo just prior to a blizzard. Everything was basically back to pre-Covid normal, the entire store was basically fully stocked, or overstocked, with the exceptions of beef, small bottles of cooking oil (many, many gallon jugs), small containers of yogurt (many, many tubs), and cheap canned cat food (plenty of boutique stuff).

8 Lives Seafood Platter Pate is the only inexpensive thing left. Some shoppers told me no cat will eat that stuff. Maybe the cats know it could kill them.

And, I'm glad I went. Campbell's Cream of Mushroom (and Cream of Chicken) condensed soup were .25 a can. I picked up about an 18 month supply.
