WAUKESHA (WLUK) -- An investigation is underway after a potential jury violation in the Waukesha Christmas parade trial.
Judge Jennifer Dorow informed the court Tuesday evening that the court had been notified of someone claiming to be a juror posting on a "Justice4Darrell" sub-Reddit.
Posting on social media about the case is prohibited in
the Wisconsin Jury Handbook.
The post begins:
So, to start with, I obviously shouldn't be here. I'm not allowed to look stuff up about this trial (or really have any connection with the Internet, but nobody actually follows sequestering rules anyway).
The jury had just begun deliberations in the trial against Darrell Brooks, who allegedly
drove his mother's SUV through the Waukesha Christmas parade, killing six and injuring dozens of others.
The anonymous post was largely critical of the court and showed support for Brooks, according to District Attorney Susan Opper.
The post also brings up subject matter jurisdiction --
a frequent issue for Brooks -- and jury nullification.
Opper said that she does not believe the user is actually a member of the jury, but Brooks claims otherwise. He said the post must have been from someone in the courtroom -- if not a member of the jury. Opper pointed out that the trial has been livestreamed internationally.
Dorow said she's concerned about the post but will allow proceedings to continue, as there is no credible evidence that the user was actually a juror.
The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office will be conducting an investigation.
The user edited the post within an hour of Dorow addressing the court on the matter. The top of the post now states: "This was all a prank, I didn't think this would blow up like this. We are sorry."
The post was removed shortly afterward for violating
Reddit rules.
