A volcano which has been erupting on La Palma for five weeks is now more active than ever, officials have said, after a partial collapse of the crater brought a powerful new river of lava to previously unaffected areas.
The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute described it as "a giant lava fountain" after it gushed out of the Cumbre Vieja volcano early on Monday.

"We're in a new phase, which is much more intense," Pedro Hernandez, a researcher at the institute, told public broadcaster RTVE.

The eruption drove a volcanic ash cloud high over the island off northwest Africa.
Residents watched to see what direction the new lava flow would take, and authorities prepared to move more people from their homes.

Prompt evacuations have so far avoided any casualties from the eruption, though the lava has totally or partially destroyed more than 2,000 buildings, mostly homes, and covered more than 900 hectares (2,200 acres) of mostly farmland.

Around 7,500 of the island's 85,500 inhabitants have been forced to flee in the past five weeks.

The rivers of lava rolling down the hillside are up to almost 3km (nearly two miles) wide, authorities said.

One main river of lava has already reached the Atlantic Ocean and another ground to a halt when it entered a built-up coastal neighbourhood.
Scientists last week counted more than 800 earthquakes of varying magnitude on La Palma, most of them not felt by residents.

Though most of the island so far is unaffected by the eruption, parts of the western side where the lava fields are expanding face an uncertain future.

With the volcano spewing more lava than before, what would it take for it to explode/violently erupt, like Krakatoa or other great disasters? Are there harbingers of doom, heralding/presaging such a calamity? Will there be a recognizable warning, a time actionable for those potentially in harm’s way?

Thanks in advance!

The volcano will have to grow much larger before it'll become a VEI 6 or 7 eruption.

I asked my geologist friend that very question. According to him, the LaPalma volcano is not of the type to produce a huge explosion like Krakatoa, though it could still produce a relatively smaller one. I wouldn't find that comforting if I lived in one of the nearby towns!

I also read that since 1750, there have been 120 volcanoes that erupted continuously for over five years! This indicates that the LaPalma event could be just beginning. On a related note, I have to wonder how much weight this eruption is adding to the western side of the island. The big concern is that western side of the island could slough off into the Atlantic, creating a tsunami that could wipe out the US's eastern seaboard. Apparently, geologists currently say that this is only a slight possibility, but I would have to think that huge amounts of weight added to the island will make it more likely.

I'm certainly not a geologist, but it seems to be common sense that if there is already geological instability extant from the existing fault, extreme added weight would only exacerbate that.

Actually the volcanoes at La Palma have had major eruptions in the past, VEI6 at a minimum. And by past I'm talking hundreds and thousands of years ago.

Interesting when this question was asked a week or so ago I found a link that said VEI6 and that it occurred about 400K years ago, and the island has been rebuilding ever since.

Thank-You, Sir, for your rapid response. I also wonder if the extent of such activity could cause a calving of the island itself, perhaps leading to what many fear could happen, vis-a-vis worst case scenario, tidal waves impacting all coastlines in the Atlantic…. Again, Sir, Thank-You…

Okay the 3.3 earthquake up north as shown on Daniel's post 1105 does concern me as that is where the "rockslide" "could" possibly trigger the famous tsunami. At least we will have several hours of warning to let all the rats in DC fly out if a big quake does actually hit there and and trigger anything. Keeping an eye on it, and will see what diamond says. He has been saying the eruptions would stop because they are running out of lava, but that may not be happening.

Cumbre Vieja, the volcano errupting on La Palma, is showing no signs of rest. “At the moment we are seeing more activity, more lava and more earthquakes,” stated the spokesman of Involcan, David Calvo.

Daily sulphur dioxide emission have been recorded at 50,000 tonnes and the plume of ash, gas and dust is reaching higher altitude to up to 3,800 meters.

Now, Doc1 can you, or your friend imagine what the US East Coast would look like if BOTH the Canary Tsunami, and/or a Bomb Cyclone hit them in any type of similar time frame?

Just as the bomb cyclone and atmospheric river dumped record amounts of rain across Northern California, there are new reports of a nor'easter forming off the Atlantic coast and could rapidly strengthen into a bomb cyclone.
The nor'easter is strengthening as it traverses the Eastern Seaboard but is expected to lose momentum and become stationary off the Northeast coast late Monday evening.
Meteorologist Ryan Maue tweeted that "the potential for a very powerful Nor'easter is increasing for Tues/Wed." He said, "the track the developing Low Pressure will determine if / where hurricane-force wind gusts impact the coast including Boston."

Maue warned: "Yes, this is a major bomb cyclone."

Accuweather weather models show coastal areas from New Jersey to Boston will be heavily impacted by the storm.

"An early season tempest could bring a wind-driven, chilly rain to portions of the Northeast from Monday through Wednesday," AccuWeather Meteorologist Randy Adkins said, adding that flooding could be a significant concern.
New York City is bracing for torrential rain and high winds Monday evening. The storm will then move up into central and southern New England, where it will continue dumping rain on Tuesday.
It will be a stormy Tuesday night from Boston to Portland, Maine.

New York City could expect upwards of 4 to 8 inches. Possible flooding conditions could be seen. Residents are bracing for the nor'easter after a deadly storm killed more than 40 people across the metro and greater area earlier this year.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, peak winds could be Category 1 hurricane strength.

Much of the impact from the storm will be between New York City and the Boston area.

Just remember folks that a mere six weeks ago, this volcano was a flat field giving no indication that incipient volcanic activity was about to occur. The geologists and other authorities didn't catch it or have a clue.

My geologist friend freely admits that geologists have a very poor track record of predicting volcanic activity. Remember that when you hear 'official' geologists tell us that there's virtually no chance of the island sloughing off and creating a mega tsunami. Mind you, I'm certainly not predicting that such an event will occur; I'm only sharing my distrust of most official sources.
