We were in the path of the 99 percentile totality. I enjoyed watching the progress.

I think I noticed that something seemed unusual, although it could've just been anticipation, etc. on my part: It seemed that it took forever for the sun to "swallow" the moon (the entire thing looked like PacMan opening his mouth in super-slow motion), but once it reached the apex and got kind of dark, the reappearance of the sun seemed to happen a lot quicker.

Also, the animals were supposed to get quiet but the roosters crowed up a storm during the whole event. Methinks they were negotiating their order to get their turns in the stewpot.

Great pic, Mountain! Mine didn't turn out near as well.

This was max coverage in my location.

We had totality for 3 or 4 minutes and it was SO DANG COOL! We could make out a few stars and planets, Venus in particular. It’s crazy how quickly it got dark and just as quickly got light again. The night birds and bugs even started kicking off. We got lucky and the clouds cleared up for us, woohoo!

About 3:00 Eastern, Our sun looked like a crescent moon here. I thought it would get darker, but it just looked like when you first put on a pair of sunglasses. Kind of muted. And a bit breezy. This was likely my last one. :(

How odd!!

It went pitch black here!!

In an instant
The lead up with gradual shadows amd temp changes took at least 30 minutes but totality was the full 3:50 minutes

Unreal

I could feel the temp changing at 50% or so. I was able to look at it once it was covered. All the solar lights and street lights came on.. It was super cool to see.

Very cool! We had overcast, and then heavier clouds moved in just before totality... darn! But the cows in the pasture moved to the bale feeder like they do at dusk, then looked totally confused as it started brightening up, and went back to their daytime grazing.

The chickens all headed towards the coop as it got darker,, and probably 80% of them went inside and roosted. When it started getting lighter, the roosters had their dawn crowing contest!

The goats started heading to the barn, aond the horses were running the fence line and screaming for us to bring them in. They are spoiled, and don't like to be out overnight... the mosquitoes were out in full force, which is why we keep them in at night.

The Spring Peepers were in full chorus, and a huge flock of starlings swirled across the darkening sky.

And the little blond three year old jumped off the trampoline, ran towards the house and said, "I need my nightlight"!

It was interesting and even awe inspiring to see it go from daylight to pitch dark in under 5 minutes. It would have been better if the clouds had stayed away, but we wouldn't have missed it!

It‘s really interesting to hear/read about the behavior of the different animals, and your 3-year-old too. Thanks for sharing.

I wasn’t expecting a huge reaction, because I knew totality would be short, but my guineas starting calling like crazy! My chickens didn’t care too much, didn’t even go inside, lol. Lots of native birds and bugs started to get active, frogs singing, some birds even started flying, to catch their evening meal.

We had huge air traffic all day
Choppers too
Lots of research groups put planes in the sky to observe and take measurements. Right after totality we saw two different jets that were *hoofing* it, super fast and super high. Nasa was specifically using jets and tracking the path of totality to take measurements. I guess I could have looked on flight tracker to see what they were were, but it was back to farm chores!

Blue skies in Central Iowa. I streamed the NASA channel in the break room. A few people came in and watched for a few minutes. I also went outside a little before 2 pm CDT. It was as dark as it gets when there's a bad storm in the area (86% totality).

Other than the point-of-sale machines going down in area retail stores for about an hour (happens about every six weeks), I didn't see or hear of anything unusual.

That it wasn’t any darker than that. To me it was darn near total night time
It was more like the moments right before full dark for us. These actually are my photos, lol. That was about 50% totality and full totality a friend of mine was working on a tractor and posted a video of how he had to drag out a work light during totality.

It was supposed to be heavily overcast today. Then it was supposed to be moderately overcast. Then spotty. In actual fact there were clear spots and “misty” spots. The sun showed thru almost all of it. About 5 minutes before totality it cleared to a very light haze and I got to see it all. The most fascinating thing was that I could see solar flares coming off the surface of the sun with my naked eyes! (At totality, the glasses were too dark to see thru.) It was really something to see!

At least one airline booked solar eclipse flights. They left from Texas and ended up in Chicago (I think). They flew a normal flight path until the eclipse caught up with them. At that point they began zig-zagging and banking the plane so each side could see the event. Pilots were in a simulator practicing for it, which was shown on the news story last night. Those flights sold out fast.

A lady astronomer said on TV, that earth is the only place in the known universe that has a total eclipse like today.

Oh neat! I hadn’t seen that. I don’t know if this was commercial or not, it was a straight line and moving *much* faster than the commercial flights we normally see. So who knows.

My chickens are starting to gather around the coop door

But they haven’t went in
It got somewhat dark in my back yard, but not enough to drive the birds into the henhouse. They mostly just slowed almost to a standstill for a few minutes.

Then one minute before our maximim eclipse, the Rooster Tabernacle Choir began to crow.

Loudly.

Mr Foghorn started it, then Petey - not to be outdone - answered Foghorn’s crow with an even louder one. Which meant Mr Foghorn had to come back with an even louder crow… and so on…

When we hit maximum, it was only about as dark as a cloudy day.

But the Rooster Tabernacle Choir was bellowing out loud enough to wake up the dead…
