Fruit and Veggie Outages in Canada Get Worse With Trucker Shortages - Bloomberg

@jenskerritt@ElizabethElkin

Canadian border agents began refusing entry to unvaccinated American truckers just days ago, and it’s already causing chaos -- particularly in fruit and vegetable markets.
A driver heads back to their truck after stopping at Canadian Customs heading towards the U.S. at the border in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec, Canada, on Jan. 14.

A mandate starting Jan. 15 requires truck drivers crossing into Canada to be vaccinated. However, only about half of American truck drivers have gotten their shots. Meanwhile, as much as 90% of Canada’s fruits and vegetables comes from the U.S. during winter, and grocery stores are already having trouble getting some shipments, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers.
“We’re seeing shortages,” said Gary Sands, senior vice president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers. “We’re hearing from members they’re going into some stores where there’s no oranges or bananas.'”

The mandate is adding to Canada’s supply chain turmoil that was already abundant due to recent storms as well as the pandemic. Shipping snarls and logistical headwinds have been blamed for rising inflation across the globe. Prices for consumers will likely rise as freight costs soar. Sending one truckload of fresh produce from California or Arizona to Canada is now $9,500, up from an average of $7,000, according to North American Produce Buyers. That works out to an additional cost of 12 Canadian cents per head of lettuce, according to the company.

The price to bring food and other exports over the border has doubled on some routes given the drop in eligible truckers, according to Alex Crane, operations manager at Paige Logistics, a freight broker in Surrey, British Columbia. That’s leaving hundreds of shipments bound for the U.S. waiting in warehouses to be picked up and trucked when and if carriers can find drivers to haul them, he said. The goods include everything from food to plumbing parts to gazebos.
“We have shipments all over the place not going out,’’ Crane said by phone. “They are just sitting at warehouses, waiting waiting.’’
The situation is only set to worsen with the U.S. imposing its own vaccine mandate on foreign travelers starting Jan. 22. The Canadian Trucking Association estimates the mandate will take as many as 16,000 drivers off the road.

The lack of truckers could potentially create “more of a shortage than what we’re experiencing now,” said Victor Smith, chief executive officer of JV Smith Companies, a grower and distributor of leafy greens. That’s because trucking is the only option for transportation. Rail service isn’t available everywhere, and shipping by air is too expensive.

Dairy trade between Canada and the U.S. may also take a hit. Canada is the sixth largest destination for U.S. exports, and nearly all of the volume moves by truck, said Nate Donnay, director of dairy market insight at StoneX Group.
“Any significant hiccup in the movement of dairy into Canada isn’t good news for dairy farmers,’’ Donnay said.

Also relatively on topic, I bought a 3lb. ground beef loaf at FM today for $2.99lb. 93/7. $8.97(no tax on food in my state), so it was a really good deal. Cut into 6 portions-5 in the freezer and one slow and low on the stove now with Montreal Steak seasoning if anyone knows about that stuff.
I have a large opening muffin tin that I use for meatloaf. I mound the meat in the holes and bake "meat muffins".. One muffin is a generous serving for one person. Alternatey, I get the one lb aluminum take out trays and fill them with meatloaf meat. Bake them, label lid and freeze for quick entrees. I bake them for about 20 minutes in the toaster oven to heat them for supper. 20 minute suppers are a good thing.

Oh well Canada....more for us!
Well, I am tempted to say the same thing...

Then I thought of Laurane and all our other friends who live north of the border...

Their goobermint is acting as much like a-holes as ours. But it is not the fault of the average citizen.

And the folks who will be affected by the vegetable and fruit shortages will be the average citizens, NOT the elite politikos who are mandating the clot shot.

For me, meatloaf needs a double loaf pan. The interior pan has drainage holes, to get rid of excess grease while baking.

Sear the pork chops in a cast iron skillet.

Set them aside, deglaze the pan with some onions, little garlic, etc.

Cube up the turnips, about 3/4" and dump in the pan with enough water to make a gravy, lay the chops back in on top turnips.

Simmer until turnips and chops are tender. (check for scorching & stir, fairly often)

Serve turnip/gravy over rice.

I cook my meatloaf in the crockpot. I make balls of foil about 3-4" in diameter and put them in the bottom of the crockpot. Then put foil on top that will hold the meat loaf....letting it run up the sides of the pot. Poke holes in the bottom and then put in the meatloaf meat. As it cooks all the grease runs out of it and I can cook it for hours while I am gone.

Great idea!
And it’ll get that same “crunchy browned top” ( that is a must have for me!) ??

In the oven I get the crunchy browned top, if I want it, with a few minutes under the broiler. I put chopped Vidalia onions in mine, and have learned that the ones sticking out of the top of the meatloaf mix have to be poked down in before baking, or otherwise they burn. The last five minutes of baking is after the ketchup and brown sugar glaze is added. I'm getting hungry.

South of San Antonio. I went grocery shopping at Walmart for the first time in months. I was expecting it to have lots of holes based on reports here but was pleasantly surprised. Only hole I saw was pasta, probably 20% full. Glanced down the cat food aisle and the cans looked about 70% full.
My Walmart is exactly like that. Have start making my own pasta.

Las Vegas, NV.

DD and I went to Walgreens this morning. Cough drops were wiped out. None. Zero. Cold meds about 50% empty or more depending on the brand. Some areas were a little sparse but nothing too bad.

Picked up a few things at the grocery store (Kroger)- curbside. They had everything we needed except a rotisserie chicken. I asked the young lady who put the stuff in my car what type of shortages she was seeing. She said no canned goods, no boxed juices, frozen foods were extremely low, and no chicken. I said is it panic buying again and she said no. She said they order and it doesn't come in from there warehouse.

Went to Albertson's for the rotisserie chicken and they had plenty. Fresh produce looked fine. Took a quick peak down a couple aisles and if anything was short you wouldn't know it. So they either had every faced to the front or they got their truck in.

You are not nice, Millwright, tempting fasting folks with such wonderful delicacies…

Day by day
In an effort to avoid the shortages in our nearest stores, I've been ordering some items online that are hard to get of late in store, especially gluten-free items.

If anyone is planning to order anything online, try not to wait too long. I'm watching an order that was supposed to be delivered on the 17th of January by FedEx bounce around the country. It originated in NV, went to NM, then Ft Worth, TX (I got excited, that's getting closer!). Then went to Hutchins, TX, where it bounced around a few times, now it's enroute to CO.

I have no idea what's going on, other than the shipping/trucking issues happening everywhere. Moral of this story is don't wait too long, and don't order everything from the same company....I'm so glad I didn't. Good grief!

Neither here nor there.
Pasta and chips seem to be the items that are universally short.

Barilla is literally in my back yard, so so far it's not an issue here yet.

The only complaint I have is with some of the nicer pastas we don't get them here, like the size between angel hair noodles and regular spaghetti noodles. If I want those I have to drive to Des Moines to Graziano brothers and buy a box that was shipped from Italy of all places.

My cousin lives in southern Illinois, an hour from any large city and her local IGA carries the stupid pasta! In the middle of freaking no where she can get specialty pasta and I can't get it here, a university town with a very diverse international community.

I just saw an article in the economic collapse saying some lice was destroying the Florida orange crop back to 1945 levels when we had 139 million people versus 329 million in 2022. Massive pricehikes for oj plus supply issues. I just bought 2 florida natural 89 oz since they last till mid march.

I want a tall cold glass of OJ soooooooo bad... Can't have it as I'm diabetic and just a small amount will send my blood sugar levels thru the roof.
OJ is the one thing I miss the most. I have dreams about drinking a big glass

Dropped into a local HEB grocery in Austin yesterday to take some paperwork into the pharmacy, and glanced at the pasta and the paper isles. There was plenty of paper towels, but there was not a single roll of TP on the isle (other than a few RV / specialties). The pasta isle has some spaghetti, some large elbow macaroni, and some flavored varieties, but that was it, everything else was gone.
