i went to a regional chain grocery store in suburban Memphis,

I paid $47 for:

One 8.70 pound boston butt, trimmed of some of the excess fat;
4 cases (24 1/2 liter bottles per case) of Dazani water;
10 bottles of Kraft bar-b-que sauce; and
2 (16 ounce) squeeze bottles of yellow mustard;
one container of cole slaw;
plus taxes on all of that, of course

OK, I'm hooked on Walmart pickup! I placed another order, and everything I wanted was in stock except for a curtain rod that the cats broke and Great Value pizza sauce, but on the latter they asked if they could substitute Ragu, and that was fine with me.

The young man who brought my bags out was very friendly and pleasant; he said that many people were buying large amounts of stuff, probably prepping.

I wanted a few sale items from Publix, but they were out of most of them. (I decided to do my shopping today rather than tomorrow, figuring with the holiday weekend the stores would be crowded tomorrow and stock would be depleted.) No cherries, but Aldi had them, and for $2 less per pound than the Publix sale price. No 2% milk at Aldi, and a half gallon of milk is now almost $3. I only needed 3 things at Aldi, so I didn't look around much.

So much of the produce I've been buying has been bad, so I'm now keeping my receipts to get a refund. I've given up on melons this year - they're awful. :(

Best deal of the day: A free cheeseburger from the Sonic app with a half price drink. :)
I haven't been inside WM to buy groceries in over 2 years since they started offering grocery pickup. I hate shopping. :D

Grand Island police working huge meat theft case

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Three semi-trailers full of meat products were stolen this weekend in Grand Island and the thefts may be part of a nationwide trend.
“It does not look like it was possible for a single person to conduct these thefts. Most likely it was a minimum of two people or more and then on top of that we have a similar thefts of meat products in other areas such as Colfax County and Omaha over the past several weeks that are probably related,” Grand Island Police Captain Jim Duering said.

Grand Island Police said that between Friday and Sunday, two stolen semi-tractors were used to steal three semi-trailers full of meat. The tractors and trailers were reported stolen from Midwest Express on east Highway 30 and another location at 1515 East Fourth Street.

“I think they went around to look for reefer units that were running. The fact that they were all loaded with beef may imply that they had done some level of surveillance,” Duering said.

The Nebraska State Patrol found the two tractors and two of the trailers outside Grand Island city limits. The trailers were empty. One of the tractors was found Sunday in Lancaster County. The third trailer, which reportedly contains $232,666 worth of beef from JBS Swift, was still missing as of Monday morning.

“We think it’s probably the same crew who made two trips and took the meat into two different locations. At some point you can’t unload 160,000 pounds of meat without having another truck available. If those were stolen or not, we don’t know,” Duering said.

Grand Island police said the thefts are similar to those reported in Schuyler and Omaha recently. Police believe it may be related to a nationwide pattern of bulk meat thefts.

“The first tractor and trailer that was taken had a little over $232,000 worth of meat. If you look at the cost of beef right now it can be anywhere between $200,000 to $1 million depending on what meat cut was on board at the time.”

Captain Jim Duering is urging drivers to make sure their trucks and trailers are secure until their relief arrives. He also urges that if anyone has information about the stolen trucks and trailers to contact the Grand Island Police Department.

FYI: For those still interested in 1/2 gallon mason jars. Local WalMart website (SE MI) still had them yesterday for $12.00 and some change.
For anyone who has access to Rural King stores, our local store has a whole pallet full of half-gallon jars sitting in the main aisle - $12.99. Nearby there are plenty of other jar sizes too.

Who is running that beef-jacking racket? That stuff has to make it into another reefer or freezer unit that is either mobile or fixed somewhere. It just seems like a huge job. If there is not a forklift and loading dock to unload and transfer, then it would take a lot of bodies to do it by hand. We've got serious enemies operating right in our midst.

I was wondering the same thing. This is bigger than just a couple of people. What kind of facilities would hold that much beef? Another commercial operation of some kind? Seems like a good team of detectives could figure it out.
There can't be that many places with the capacity to store that much meat. This almost screams old time Mafia of some kind.

Pretty darned sketchy.

Saved, to glorify God.
I paid $17.98 for 4 lbs of frozen chicken wings at Kroger’s. Yeah I am stupid, but the craving was fierce!
You could have used the same recipe with chicken thighs or legs and paid 1/3 of what you paid and gotten twice as much meat.

ACTUALLY, YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN
FOURTEEN POUNDS OF LEG AND THIGHS FOR $18 So you only got 28% of the chicken you would have, and wings are more bony than other cuts, so you actually only got 2 pounds of meat and 2 pounds of bones for $18

WALMART- (leg + thigh)
Freshness Guaranteed Chicken Leg Quarters, 4.25 - 6.2 lb
$6.03avg price$1.28/lb
Final cost by weight

*********************************
You can STILL GET Kroger leg and thigh quarters, TWENTY SIX POUNDS for $18

They are selling it for $.69 a pound!

I worked at a chain steak house when I was in high school, and the tractor trailer came once a week with a meat delivery. Not all of it was for our store, but we were the first stop. The truck driver and one of the store employees master minded the robbery, and they almost got away with it. Neither one of them knew about the store security cameras. They had like 10 cars of people waiting and they were grabbing meat, packing a car full, and the driver would take off as soon as it was loaded. They had disposed of half the truck when the cops got there and not all of them got caught...

Not really used to do some truck to truck transfers when I was younger. One truck backs up to the other with both doors open a sixty pound steel plate is dropped to make a path between trucks. Two guys with pallet jacks could transfer everything from one to the other in less than 40 minutes.

DH used to back up a truck so they were tail to tail. Then with the lift gates down he could transfer the whole trailer contents to the second one in about 15 minutes with one other person to help.

Question would be 1. How/where was the meat truck parked. 2. Where was the driver? 3. We're the trucks bolted and locked.

Bigger issue was where was the going? Need reefer storage or immediately hand the stuff out. I suspect the meat is in another state in a closed warehouse with freezers ready to sell.

Heard yesterday about gangs in Calif now raiding grocery stores of meat and selling 50 cents on the dollar. New blackmarket in high gear

Walmart near us was well stocked with ball jars. ..did the mandatory grab of a couple cases..try to get a few each time we go..prices high ...have a lot but I add some every time we go....way to expensive but now...who really knows what the future will hold...better safe that sorry comes to mind.

Want get more frozen veggies to dehydrate...easiest and cheapest way to do veggies...plus they take no electricity and less space to store. My dehydrator the takes a pound a tray...then vacumn seal in canning jars....

Central Virginia

Not time to can tomatoes and berries yet...that will come soon.

What dehydrator are you using? Do you have it set up with solar? You mentioned you don't use electricity for it (unless I read that wrong.) Do you thaw the frozen veg and put it b/w some towel to get some of the water out first? I've not dehydrated from frozen.

The perps may not be using stolen trucks.

Are the trucks from Mexico making it as far north as Nebraska? If so that's where I'd start looking.

My guess is the meat has already been bar coded if it was going to distribution centers, so it wouldn't be hard to identify the stolen meat once found.

I think it's going into trucks that are not stolen and is headed to or is already in Mexico. From there it can land anywhere on the planet.

A few days ago, I bought a trimmed Boston Butt from a regional grocery chain for $1.79 a pound, which is the price when they trim it before sale (would have been $1.39 if I would have bought a twin pack, untrimmed).

FYI, Southern Breeze, it was Food Giant. You all have that store up your way, too, in case you want to run catch the sale before it ends tomorrow night.

It was already trimmed before it was put into the meat case.

There is just me and my DW, so I asked the butcher to slice the trimmed butt into 3/4 inch slices for me - which they will do at no charge if you ask them.

It is too hot to bake a butt in the daytime, with all this hot, summer weather.

In fact, it is too hot to bake an entire butt period. Even in the middle of the night.

So what I did was, I took each individual slice of the meat - still a good sized piece of meat - and I wrapped each piece carefully in foil.

Then I took my largest metal baking pans and layed the foil wrapped meat out on the pan. The pans were large enough that only one fit on a single rack in the oven.

The butt was big enough that I barely had enough space in my oven for all the meat slices, but I did manage to fit them all in, single layering them on the pans, of course.

Then I slow cooked them at 325 degrees for 1 hour.

When I took them out, they were hot, juicy, and very tender.

We ate some of the meat with a salad and some southern peas right away. Then I let the rest of the foil covered meat slices cool.

After they cooled, I put the foil packets in a big, freezer type Ziploc bag, and put them in thr refrigerator.

I just served Boston Butt for our 4th of July picnic.

It was so easy. I pulled a couple of meat packets out of the refrigerator, put them over my gas grill to warm them, and then served the warm, juicy meat with some pork-n-beans and some cole slaw.

Easy, quick to prepare meal in this 90-something degree heat, and totally delicious when served.

We have already eaten two meals off the butt. I figure we have four more meals for each of us, on that one big piece of meat that cost me less than 18 dollars. That is about $1.50 per plateful of meat, and it was pretty easy to prepare, too.

Yep. Love Food Giant. I shop there often, and will be going by there tomorrow! Thanks, Barry.

It’s a problem here, too. And I need it for the cpap because my village water is terrible.
Might be the time to look into distilling your own. Get a hose that will fit on stem of pressure canner and fill with water and boil off into catchment container. I have an electric distiller so I can make colloidal silver. Should work till the grid goes down. Will have to check to see if it draws too much for the solar, tho. If it does, I have an ancient pressure cooker I can use for the purpose. Think outside the box, you are a prepper after all.

I have a Nesco garden master digital FD1040..with four trays..and the screens... .it is electric...and has temp..and timer.. (.somewhere I have a hang one that will air dry. .)
All you need to do is open the bag and dump the veggies on the trays......no need to defrost or dry them...I use the screens ...spread the veggies on the trays...in a single layer....set the temperature for 125 degrees and the timer for 10 hours.. it has not taken that long ...but I can stop it and check for dryness...dry put in ball jar and put on lid and ring..leave on counter for a few days to make sure no moisture forms on the inside of the jar....if moisture forms put back on trays and dry some more ....when they are totally dry I seal the jars with my vacumn sealer and jar sealers.

I like doing them this way ..no cleaning, cutting up, no blanching...no fuss..no muss. .no clean up
I plan to order a couple more trays and screens..

Hint
I try to do only one type of veggie in each load..because different ones dry quicker than others..it is easier if they all the same and dry the same.

so the case of
(24 cans) Dole All Natural 100% Pineapple Juice, 6 Fl oz
that I paid 10 and change for on 7/1 has gone back up to $32.49. Guess I caught it when they were expiring. I'll be interested in knowing what the expiration date is on them, they are not here yet.

The canned foods I've ordered for shipping are still on pick up only for a month now.

I went to Walgreen's and Walmart, today. Both stores were fully stocked in every section. I didn't even see a hint of any shortages. NE MS. I was afraid both stores would look like a swarm of locust had gone through after a holiday weekend. I was mildly surprised.

Wasn't someone here looking for hot sauce and/or siracha sauce? Publix has it on sale this week - Texas Pete and Cha! Siracha. 2/$3.19, at least in the TN Valley area.

I give up.
Just because of you all I bought, and tried Duke brand of “condiment” because it was on sale.
It is wonderful!

Got into Duke's when we lived in FL on a friend's recommendation. I love it too. But Hellman's is still the best, IMO.

:)

Went to Wegmans yesterday. Couldn't believe how expensive everything is, but that's everywhere.

Edit: Can't believe I just saw a commercial on TV -- Jeep Grand Wagoneer -- Only $90,000 !!! LOL

Grocery report.

Went in the latter afternoon, usually a morning shopper. Not sure if that was the difference.
There were a lot of people wearing masks again, especially the young (college age to under 40). It felt quite strange. Also pretty sure I saw two (separately) liberal women I used to know through different affiliations.
Both appeared not to see me, even though I had no mask, they both did. It was just weird. At first, I was a bit offended, but then I realized we've got zero to talk about nowadays anyway.
What's odd is I haven't seen anyone I know in the grocery store in years, it seems.

The place was well stocked, maybe a few things were missing. Like store brand sliced cheeses, those were cleaned out. Regional stuff was there and decently stocked. Produce was the most stocked that I've seen it in a long time. Got everything, had to get organic broccoli because that's all there was.

Even found pickling spice! That was nowhere to be found at the bigger store last week.

Other than forgetting to buy bread and jelly I got everything I set out for, a big list too. Used store coupons and saved $13.

Only bad part was the deli, trying to get beef bologna. Took the 3-4 of them a few minutes to wait on me.
'Training in progress.'
Woman says to me, 'that was a half of a pound?'
Me: One pound, please!
Her: after about 3 minutes trying to get the slicer working, an automated slicer. She switched to the other automated slicer.
Her: Starts piling up my pound of bologna. Then begins taking it off the pile, bring it to a half pound.
Me: Oh hey, I wanted a whole pound please.
Her: 'I thought you said half.' As she groans.
Her: Starts piling bologna back on. Then begins slicing more, making it 1.3 pounds. Over. More groaning.
Her: Finally weighs and labels my package at 1.06 pounds.

Glad that was really the only bad part. And wow, are sandwich meats flippin' expensive now. Most of it in the $8.99 to $12.99 price range.

So you're saying that the news I've been posting here isn't real? :groucho:

Hot sauce, chili pastes, I was looking for some and found it at the Thai and Korean grocery stores here in town. One of the things I learned when I had international student roomies is that hot sauce and chili sauce can cover up a multitude of gross or boring food dishes.

OC finally found some malt vinegar, I now feel like my vinegar collection is complete. And he agreed that brown rice vinegar and malt vinegar do NOT taste the same!

Let me tell you weird. It's flippin' hot out there - in the 90s. I went to the post office after closing, because I had to drop a package in the bin. No one around; parking lot empty. A car drives up with an older couple in it; they stepped out of their car, both wearing masks. They went into the post office to get a package from a locker, got into their car, and drove off...both still with masks on! I couldn't help but wonder if they wear them at home with each other. It's so hard to resist the impulse to bleat at these foolish people! :D I did see a few other sheeple wearing them, but not too many - maybe 4-5 others between Publix and Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's actually dropped some prices - the blueberry muffins were 50 cents lower, and $3.99 cookies were now $2.99. The imported Italian pasta was well stocked and still 99 cents for a one pound bag and the Pound Plus imported Belgian chocolate bars are still $4.99 for 19 oz. I didn't notice any price increases, but they were out of pizza dough - one of my main reasons for going.

For those of you looking for canning supplies, Publix (TN Valley area) was very well stocked - that had lots of jars in all sizes. I don't know anything about canning but got into a conversation with two ladies who were buying jars and asked them if the price was good. They said the price was about 50% higher than last year, but still better than other places, assuming other places even had them. As so often happens, we got into a conversation about Jesus' soon return. People are waking up!

I had lunch at Wendy's; they've been open for eat-in, but now are back to drive-thru only. I got my chicken sandwich and a free one for dinner, because I did the survey on the back of my last receipt - it was a full-sized sandwich, so I saved around $6 and got two meals for about $10, including the new strawberry Frosty. I thanked the young lady at the window and told her she was much appreciated; she broke into a big smile said I made her day. That's something you all might want to consider doing - give some encouragement to those who do bother showing up for work; maybe it'll keep them from giving up and quitting!
