Went to Aldis today. They had *nice* California strawberries for $1.49 a pound. Since our berries were thinned and transplanted late, we only had enough for fresh eating. So I grabbed 8 to make jam. They turned out to be such good quality (too often, there are ones starting to turn hidden in the packs), I think I'll pick up a couple dozen more and freeze them.

I never buy meat, but on the way to the orange juice section, I decided to look at their chicken prices.

They had NO CHICKEN! Not a single package of anything! I'm very glad for the 200 meat birds on pasture right now!

I did my first Walmart pick-up order yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised - it was fast and easy, and I figure in the long run it saved me money because I didn't wander through the store picking up things I hadn't planned on. Everything I wanted was in stock, although they asked if they could substitute a mouthwash, which was fine. They got the order right, and the two employees who brought out my things were very friendly and pleasant. Question: Do you tip them?

I don't think they're allowed to take tips. They're also beyond polite, so I think the consequences are severe if anyone complains.

Nope...they aren't allowed tips. I just thank the little elves profusely when they do my shopping for me. Around here, it's mostly high school or college age kids who do the "picking" and bring the stuff out, and they are delights.

My grandson works at Walmart loading the pickup orders. While he's not allowed to take tips, if you do the survey and give a good rating, once a month the individual with the best rating gets a gift certificate. My grandson has won more than once.

I do pickup at WM occasionally and asked them if I could tip them. They said no, that they were the highest paid employees, except for assist managers and managers.

WM trip this morning --- the canned cat food aisle had a sign that said that if you weren't happy with their available selection, you could use their "ship to home" option. They have refused to ship cat food to me for 2 years, it always reverts to "store pick up" even when the store says they're out of stock. I wonder if they really will ship it now...

The local/regional grocery (N MN) was in good shape this morning - the help was madly at work stocking and getting ready for the holiday weekend. I passed up some pretty decent deals on pork because it's frankly too danged hot to cook inside, and though I'm thinking seriously of canning up some pork for the winter, need to get clearance from my shoulder surgeon before I go lifting jars and canners around.

Weird - was out and about, and so also on the prowl for clearance flower bedding plants. Saw that Walmart (bigger town) had quite a few left, so actually went in the store (for the first time in months!). I got the last available cart at the door - nobody was working bringing them in. The place was like a ghost town with very few customers. Cranky, creaky, ancient or mega-slug seemingly "over-medicated" cashiers when you could find one, and pallets of "stuff" parked in the middle of all the aisles - like they had given up even trying to put anything out on the shelves. Definitely gave the impression nobody was showing up for work. Didn't help any that, during my absence of months, they'd resurfaced the floors in a terrible depressing dark grey color...which made the store feel dark and gloomy. Haven't faced that kind of "Soviet Russia" vibe in many years.
Dang.

Strange move by Walmart - I originally added 3 packages of Barilla pasta with cheese to my online order. It showed up as pickup only; delivery not available. I didn't order them but left them included on the online order.

The next day their status was changed to delivery and I bounced. Ordered the 3.

Walmart algorithm must determine the most attractive method of buying and customize it to an order.

This happens to me a lot with Walmart.

In the conversation I had with my sister last night we talked about pet food. She has three cats, one with a urinary tract issue and is on Science Diet. She said she has to look around to find it. She lives in the Fayetteville, AR area. She does not get down to her last can before buying, she buys when she opens her last case. At least she has decent sense about things like that.

I had a cat on the Science diet food years ago for the same issue. There was a national brand that also had a food for the urinary issue and I switched him to that, he lived to 17.

Dang.

I wonder if the wages are insufficient to attract and hold employees? With ever increasing inflation rate they need higher wages just to break even.

It's easier just to quit and find a better paying job.

That happens with only a few things I've been ordering for shipping at walmart these days. Its been over a month since they've had the canned foods I've ordered many times on shipping, I check daily and sometimes more.

They must be paying what McDees is paying - which is up to $18.00 for starting. The employees I saw this morning weren't of the quality to be doing much quitting for a better paying job...haha..they were seriously lacking in bargaining material.

Greater Kansas City area - DW just got back from Aldi's. "No need to go there anymore, their prices aren't any cheaper than anyone else's."
Depends on where your anywhere else is -- local store has name brand canned peaches and pears at $2.65 a can and store brand at $2.35. Aldi was $1.09 last week and Walmart $1.00.

Bing cherries, on sale at Fareway $6.99 a pound. I bought only one bag. Watermelons are still a limit of one.

That's correct. Also, corn was $0.20/ear while it lasted. It was gone when I got there, but corn at this time of the year is coming from somewhere else and usually very tough to chew.

No whole watermellons left, but there were several packets of slices for $5, which I passed on, a hard pass! Don't know who is buying that.

Added: Oh, never mind. You were referring to the canned chicken. It has been a very long day!

Neither here nor there.

The sweet corn we’ve bought so far this year has been nasty. The people I see buying melon slices are seniors,I get that if you live alone and don’t eat much a whole melon isn’t worth the price.

OK, I'm hooked on Walmart pickup! I placed another order, and everything I wanted was in stock except for a curtain rod that the cats broke and Great Value pizza sauce, but on the latter they asked if they could substitute Ragu, and that was fine with me.

The young man who brought my bags out was very friendly and pleasant; he said that many people were buying large amounts of stuff, probably prepping.

I wanted a few sale items from Publix, but they were out of most of them. (I decided to do my shopping today rather than tomorrow, figuring with the holiday weekend the stores would be crowded tomorrow and stock would be depleted.) No cherries, but Aldi had them, and for $2 less per pound than the Publix sale price. No 2% milk at Aldi, and a half gallon of milk is now almost $3. I only needed 3 things at Aldi, so I didn't look around much.

So much of the produce I've been buying has been bad, so I'm now keeping my receipts to get a refund. I've given up on melons this year - they're awful. :(

Best deal of the day: A free cheeseburger from the Sonic app with a half price drink. :)

The corn I've been getting from Publix (4/$2) has been exceptionally good this year! I usually buy a whole watermelon even though I'm alone, because it's cheaper for a whole one than that rip-off price on a container of pieces which often runs $7-8 vs. $5-6 for a whole melon. If it's a big one I share with a neighbor who has been very nice to me.

Unfortunately the melons have been either nasty or tasteless the last few years, so I won't bother anymore - my "watermelon" now is frozen pops made with watermelon. (Jonny Pops are excellent!) Before the scamdemic there used to be a Mexican guy with a pickup full of watermelons (and sometimes corn too) that he'd park in a strip shopping center a few days every week. His melons were amazing - tasted just like they used to when I was a kid, and a big one was only $5. I hope he's OK - I miss him and his melons. :(
