We went to Walmart this morning. The only shortage I saw were 10 lb bags of jumbo russet potatoes. There were none, but there were other size bags and types that were plentiful. Small Town, MS.

Because of the talk of worsening food shortages, we bought lots of extra for food storage, today, on top of our regular grocery shopping. We have no idea what this winter is going to bring, and we both wanted to get it while it was still available to get. Granted, we can't afford to do this every time we grocery shop, but we did jump in, and make a big push of it, today. I already have a stocked pantry, so where to put everything is going to be a problem. BUT, it's a problem I don't mind having. I'll figure it out.
I am seeing that in different stores here in potato country. Plenty of 5 pound bags but not 10.

Neither here nor there.
We did an impromptu shopping trip to Sam's Club in Ankeny, IA, yesterday, after my hand specialist appointment. That club store is much, much bigger than the one we shop at here locally, we're north of Ankeny.

Anyway, there was a woman who was rather unhappy that the boneless skinless chicken breasts were $2.98 a pound. Apparently a week earlier they were $1.98 a pound.

Me: One I was just happy they had any, our store very rarely has any in stock now! Two I was asking OC how much room was in the basement freezer. Three the same exact product, the same exact brand, is $4.98 a pound here locally at our Sam's, Aldi, Fareway, and HyVee stores!!!

To say that I was over the moon would be an understatement! We also bought gas for $3.139 a gallon while we were in Ankeny, here locally it's $3.899 a gallon.

I'm making yakisoba with chicken and veggies for dinner tonight, yum!

Oh and that Sam's Club had a four pack of top sirloin tips for $24.95, yep you read that correctly. I passed since we can our own beef and chicken now.

Plenty of the 5 lb bags, but the potatoes were so tiny, they just didn't look worth the price. I didn't see any in any variety that were large enough for a baked potato.
Same here and if you want the nice big ones, the last time I looked were 99 cents a pound and probably a lot higher now. I bought 15 pounds of Yukon because all the russet I have been buying sprout and go soft fast.

Sam's usually have 15 lb bags of the large russet potatoes. I'm hoping to get a bag of those if they're still available. I'll cut them up and make French fries to go in the freezer if they begin to soften and rot. We do go through a lot of potatoes.

We went to a wm at a big town today after we went to the va. The isles were really wide. There was plenty of shredded cheese, but very little sliced cheese. The sliced cheese section is usually wide but it was maybe 1/4th the size it usually is. 4 sticks of wm butter was less than 2 sticks of Kerrygold. I bought the wm brand. I replaced the four packages of Bar S hot dogs and didn't get any of the good kind. The only plain corn meal is a 16Oz canister. I bought 5 pounds of 5 minute grits. My list was small and I still spent $61.

I went to Aldi today. My store is getting really pathetic. More empty shelves than back during covid. No sugar still. There was another pallet of flour where the sugar is supposed to be. They hadn't pulled the sign so I am saying at some point they are hoping in getting sugar again. It's been at least 3 weeks since I saw sugar at Aldi.

More empty shelves in the cookie/cracker section. Canned goods not looking all that great. Hardly any soup. No pasta or mac and cheese. Very little instant mashed potatoes. No 10 pound bags of real potatoes and not many 5 pound.

Produce was slim with a lot of holes. Frozen was extremely empty where the chicken and hamburger is supposed to be. Lunch meat was over half empty. The cheese was fairly full.

Fresh meat also had a lot of holes and not as full as normal.

Aldi is turning into a convenient store where they just don't have much anymore.

I stopped at the local/regional chain on my way back home this morning - have been charged (trusted!!) with making the potato salad for our family picnic gathering down near the Twin Cities this weekend. So, was in search of reds or Yukon Golds - I settled on the reds because they were nice and big, and new crop. But they had every type imaginable in the store from the little hippie-dippie fancy fingerlings to big baking Russets. Granted - lucky here - we get a lot of potatoes more or less locally. These reds came from not far away in W. Central Minnesota.

I took a good look at my potato plants last night, and it's time to dig up a bunch of them. Potatoes are popping out of the hills. Saturday or Sunday, whichever day gives us less rain.

Went to Tops for a few things. They had a medium sized bottle of Dreft detergent for $19.99 :ecrz:

Bakery sourdough bread. Eight slices and one crust (yes I counted them), $5.99.

No I didn't get either. I was just browsing.

Walmart still doesn't have Keystone ground beef. I have a half dozen cans left. I didn't do bad there, only $28, but I didn't get anything significant.

Tops was $24. So My groceries were only $52 this week. But note, no meat, no lunchmeat either. Just fresh stuff and cottage cheese, milk, bread.

Gas was $4.99 for premium (not e-free).

My mom always used the reds for her potato salad. V

Our Indiana Kroger had plenty of potatoes yesterday but every size bad looked like it had an increase of a dollar/bag
I ended up getting 5lb bag for 3-something because I was out of them.

Looking at these red potatoes from yesterday, second-thinking they can't be new crop this early, but they seem to have been stored well....out of Wadena, MN. Used a couple for supper last night and they are good all the way through and the skins are nice and fresh-looking. None of them at the store were cheap, that's for sure. The stores asking a buck/lb. isn't unusual.

Here, what are called "new" potatoes, are usually dug very early, having skins that have yet to thicken and toughen up. Very thin skins, that can fairly easily flake off (even before cooking) is what one would look for. Very early varieties, dug "new", might be ready about now. The bulk of the crop is dug much later, having much thicker skins (like the russet types) giving better storage qualities.

Smith's NE NV yesterday. More prices up, quality and quantity down, shelves looking thin. Frozen potato products very thin, and as someone noted, these are the potatoes from last year's harvest. Guessing this year will be worse. Pasta looking better than it has in months, but prices still high and shelves are still not full. Ramen thin. Dairy shelves very thin and cheap eggs are always sold out. I think these are the things everyone is seeing.

Because we have stored the basics, most of what I buy is the perishables that we don't produce ourselves and then the discount/clearance shelves. I time my visit to hit exactly when those shelves are being filled. The lady that normally fills them wasn't there yesterday; some 20's-ish kid about 6'5" and 300 lbs was filling the shelves instead. He still had a whole cart to go and let me in to take a look. I only picked up a few things at that point, far less than normal. I didn't want to be in his way, so I decided to return when he was done. Well, the shelves were pretty neat, except for a really banged-up box of cereal. I decided to pull it down and see if it was discounted better because of its condition. Lo and behold. A treasure trove of discounted Snicker's, Twix, Milky Way, and Kit Kats. Yes, those babies came home for Christmas stocking stuffers.

I continue to see some short-dated items on discount, but a lot of what is coming up are closeouts, and it bears paying close attention to those, as well as knowing that the vast majority of food that is past date is still perfectly acceptable to eat. I can't believe how many people continue to be suckered by those dates.

Home Depot had leather work gloves on clearance for $1.73, so DH bought two dozen pairs. The thrift store continues to have a few good scores as well. They're getting so much stuff in that everything in the store is 1/2 off. Unfortunately, the clothing store, in a separate building, was closed yesterday due to lack of staff.

Perhaps the last of the previous year's harvested russets are now depleted. They can be stored about 8 months.

In a couple of months, (hopefully) this year's harvest should be arriving in stores.

I've read where Barilla makes a PROTEIN plus PASTA (spaghetti and macaroni) that gives you 10grams of protein with every serving and tastes like regular pasta, even though its made with wheat, chickpeas, and lentils. NO SOY!

But retailers are charging up to $9 or $10 for a 14oz box! You can get it for $3 or $4 dollars a box IF YOU BUY IT BY THE CASE OF 12 BOXES! From restaurant suppliers or Amazon or other bulk food prviders and check Barilla.com.

Here, if the pasta is roughly $1/lb it flies off the shelves. The expensive stuff just sits there until there is a 2fer1 sale.

It's NOT "just pasta" cheap or expensive!

You would NOTICE this pasta. It gives you as much protein as a small serving of MEAT. It has chickpeas, peas, and lentils in it.

YOU WILL DIE, eating normal, or regular pasta without supplemental meat or protein.

You get MORE PROTEIN ( 10 grams) just eating this pasta than you would get eating a whole small can of vienna sausages! (7grams protein for the whole can)

Or TWO BAR S CLASSIC Hot Dogs ( 3 grams protein apiece ) More than a serving of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese (8 grams of protein) More than serving of Peanut butter(2tablespoons) which has only 7 grams of protein.

if you want a real protein high, take this pasta and put the cheapest little can of chunk light tuna on it, 29grams of protein + the 10 grams of protein in the pasta! =39 grams!

COSTCO ( KIRKLAND) Lean sliced Ham (sandwich meat) has only 5 grams of protein per slice.

Is this it? Says it's in stock at our local Walmart.
Yeah, they are changing the price RIGHT NOW from $2.62 a 14.oz box to $16.99+ $9.99 shipping a box! I couldn't get through my order, the types kept disappearing from my cart and I looked back at the price and it was NOW $16.99 a box instead of $2.62!

I'm on the outskirts of Charlotte NC and am noticing some odd pricing in groceries. Where I'm at puts me in the vicinity of quite a few grocery stores, there are 4 Aldi stores within 15 minutes of me. I'm seeing major price differences in the stores. At the store closest to me things are anywhere from .40 to 1.00 higher than the other stores. New homes are going up on every patch of greens around here and the prices are upper 300's but another area has experienced huge growth also and their prices are lower so I don't think that's the reason. It's just crazy that I can drive a few minutes out and get things at close to pre pandemic prices or stay close to home, fight the traffic, and pay more.....
