At least four deaths and more than 1,400 flight cancellations have been blamed on the Arctic blast that has wreaked havoc across the Midwest and Great Plains as forecasters reveal that 70 per cent of the United States will be hit with freezing temperatures this week.

A 57-year-old man and two women ages 64 and 81 were killed in a head-on collision in Kalamo Township, Michigan, Monday morning. Authorities said the poor road conditions were likely to blame in the two-vehicle crash. The victims have not been identified.

In Kansas, eight-year-old Cassie Ralston was killed in a three-vehicle crash caused by icy roads on Monday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the collision occurred 8am Monday on Highway 56 near Overbrooke in Osage County when a maroon Dodge Ram pickup truck driving westbound lost control, crossed the center line and hit a black Ford Edge head-on.

OMG!! Snow storms and bad weather in the US of A.....that's never happened before.

I'm sorry but....WTFO. Winter weather is NOT a new thing. Happens EVERY year about this time. We get warnings and weather alerts so why do people seem to go stupid when this kind of weather returns EVERY YEAR?!?!

Why is it that so many people are unprepared and panic stricken every year when this happens? HELLO!! Time to wake up!

There is absolutely no reason for all this panic and stupid stuff going on. You know it's coming. You know when it's coming. You should already be well prepared for its arrival and it should be no big deal. People need to quit being sooooo stupid!!

Talking about weather is totally cool. What gets me is the way the news dorks on TV act like every seasonal storm is the first time it's EVER EVER happened. Even worse is that people living in the area act like they have NEVER experienced weather before. OMG we have to run out and get "whatever" for this emergency....THAT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR!! DOH?!?

It’s cold, earlier, but that’s pretty normal. Once every six or so years it is like this.

I think you might be on to something here - we should develop a saying so future generations aren’t manipulated by propaganda. How about “winter came in like a lion”? Or if winter is late use the word lamb?

According to Greta Thunberg we're suffering from global warming and you lot are delusional for imagining cold weather!

I was talking to my mom, yesterday. She is 78 yrs. old, and said that she never remembers North MS. having snow laying on the ground in November. We're setting record breaking temps down here.

Remember when that big Volcano in the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula went off last summer. It dumped a lot of ash in the upper atmosphere primarily blowing into the Arctic Polar area. Combine that cooling effect the the solar minimum and you will have cold fronts penetrate deep south. Just my opinion of course. You would have to ask a sky screamer for the real reasons.

Um Chicago cancelled 1400 flights out of Ohare. We are six weeks early for that kind of travel chaos.

Nope shades of 1992/93 and 2007/08, all caused by volcanic eruptions. Expect epic flooding next summer in the midwest, and epic droughts in places like Alaska, Washington, Arizona, etc.

It has gone off four times now at elevations over 34K feet and it's still erupting.

20 degrees with wind chill of a big fat 0 ain’t proper weather for North Texas on November 12th. Screw that!!!

Think of it like this... if the temps stay low enough long enough it'll kill all of the bugs, especially the skeeters! Stink bugs don't tolerate these types of temps at all, which is good news for my area.

It did this a few times in the 1970s but it may not have been as heavy as it is now; I can remember getting really frustrated because North Mississippi would have snow and in Hattiesburg, we just had freezing rain.

Except in 1978 when the heavy snow went almost to the Gulf, one of my professors was really upset because the kids mostly boycotted classes to build snowmen and run around outside - he had lived all over the world and snow was pretty normal for him but it wasn't for most of his students!

Ask your Mom if she remembers that late 1970s snowstorm and if so - is it worse now? If it is, that would be a mighty snowfall - the stuff in Hattiesburg as was bad as anything I later saw in Denver except it was for a shorter time period and melted the next day.

Yeah, I'll have to ask her. She may have just forgotten. I must have forgotten, too. In the late 70's, I should be able to remember it. Are you sure your account happened in November? It's not unusual for North Mississippi to get snow, but usually it happens in December and January. Ice storms are more frequent.

Oh now that maybe the problem (and my reading comprehension) I honestly don't remember when it was but I know a previous snowstorm that I saw in Vicksburg was in December, so yes the one in the late 1970s (I think 1978) may have been later in the Winter.

This too shall pass.
I was wondering if having snow stick on the ground for two days (so far) was normal for this time of year in this part of Kentucky. We are south and a little east of Louisville.

Depends on the ground temp before it started snowing, if the grass was still green then probably not.

No, it is not normal to have 70 percent of the USA impacted, and 200 million people impacted, with this kind of extreme cold weather two weeks before Thanksgiving.

The historic Arctic blast that has brought record low temperatures to 70 per cent of the US, left six dead and brutalized 200 million people is expected to get worse throughout Wednesday.

Multiple car pile-ups have occurred across several states, including Ohio, Kansas and Michigan, where six people have died.

On Tuesday, 21-year-old Ciearra Money Audrey Brown died in a 16-car pileup on Interstate 80 in Ohio, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Several other people were treated for minor injuries at local hospitals.

The Eaton County Sheriff's Office in Michigan said two women, ages 81 and 64, and a 57-year-old man were killed Monday in a two-vehicle crash caused by poor road conditions.

In Kansas, the Highway Patrol said an 8-year-old girl died in a three-vehicle wreck.

Multiple people were also injured when about 50 vehicles were involved in a huge pileup on Interstate 80 just outside Youngstown in Ohio on Tuesday morning.

Despite the already dangerous roadways and freezing temperatures in some states, forecasters are predicting that the weather is only expected to get worse for much of the country throughout the day on Wednesday. About 70 per cent of the US population saw temperatures at or below freezing Wednesday morning.

The arctic conditions will 'culminate this morning with more than a hundred locations expected to tie or set new low temperature records,' the National Weather Service said Wednesday morning.

Forecasters said more than 240 million people are under winter warnings, watches and advisories. Weather officials projected even lower temperatures for late Wednesday and early Thursday at some locations in New England and upstate New York.

Arctic air has been moving across the eastern two-thirds of the US, bringing snow from the Midwest to the Northeast.

Record low temperatures were recorded Tuesday around New York City; Buffalo, New York; Burlington, Vermont; and parts of Ohio.

On both sides of the water - these storms are supposed to slam into mainland Europe tomorrow - this is a lovely shot from Wales that reminds of the old 1980s special "A Child's Christmas in Wales" (it is snowing outside here too but not as strongly).

It's good to stay off the major routes for the first few snow storms. Some drivers only allow for the conditions after they have totaled a car and put a few people in the hospital or morgue.

The traffic deaths could be avoided if people would just slow down. It's not summer anymore and you can't drive 70mph anymore. Leave earlier or stay home if you can't drive on snowy roads. And for all the snowflakes, SJW types, enviro wackos......................it's winter. Get a 4 wheel drive vehicle. And like I said above, SLOW DOWN.......!
Watch the weather reports for incoming bad weather and get food or whatever you need so you can stay OFF those bad roads. Sheesh, people are really dumbed down now. Winterize your home. If you have a woodstove, make sure you have enough firewood for the whole winter. If you don't have a woodstove, get one. Power goes out? You still have heat.

Criminy, YES.

SLOW. DOWN. I went out a couple days ago, bombing along at 35. Had three cars pass me like I was standing still and even I could feel my tires sliding a bit. Plowed roads have a tendency to get icy.

Though the woodstove advice, sadly, doesn't work for everyone. A lot of homeowners insurances get twitchy if you even MENTION the word. Premiums spike like beach volleyball.
