PC STD: WHO SCHEDULES EMERGENCY MEETING ON MONKEYPOX OUTBREAK
The World Health Organization is planning to formally rename the monkeypox virus and the disease it causes to avoid stigmatizing any group, as it studies whether the virus could be sexually transmitted CBS News 06/15/2022

OK, I am not a prude and I was even trained to hand out explicit advice to people (along with condoms) during the AIDs epidemic in San Francisco before there were treatments.

But even I am getting a serious "ick" factor on the "how to have sex with Monkey Pox" poster - I mean really? I am cringing at the thought that I agree with Nancy Reagan but on this topic - I'd say, "When you are infectious, just say NO and I mean NO."

AIDs/HIV was different because there wasn't a cure, and people could (and did) live with it for years. Also many couples, like my housemates at the time, could discover that one was infected. Men with hemophilia who were infected, often had wives or long-term partners (as most were heterosexual) and the idea of a sexless marriage is difficult for most people especially when young; either homosexual or heterosexual.

So having actual advice on the ways people could continue to express physical affection for one another, including in marriage, over what might be the rest of one partner's lifetime made sense.

Monkey Pox lasts usually about three weeks, most people can abstain from sex for a month or two; heck in marriage it is often longer than that from illness or childbirth - often things that are not nearly as new or exotic as Monkey Pox. I mean there are similar pamphlets for resuming sex after a heart attack, giving birth, and other medical conditions but we don't usually see them outside of a medical clinic.

Just weird, really kind of weird...

Oklahoma Health Dept. identifies second probable case of monkeypox in state

This probable case has no connection or relation to the first case of monkeypox identified in Oklahoma the week of June 6

OKLAHOMA CITY —

The Oklahoma State Department of Health identified the state's second probable case of monkeypox.

Health department officials said in a news release that the second probable case was identified in a central Oklahoma resident with recent international travel to a country with confirmed cases. The person is in isolation, and the Oklahoma State Department of Health is investigating and conducting contact tracing.

This probable case has no connection or relation to the first case of monkeypox identified in Oklahoma the week of June 6, authorities said in the news release. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention later confirmed the initial monkeypox case.

"We knew there was a possibility of more cases being identified in the state," State Epidemiologist Jolianne Stone said in the news release. "Our response team remains activated and continues to coordinate various areas within the agency to respond as necessary when a case arises."

Health officials said monkeypox is not easily transmissible, but the virus can be transmitted to humans through direct, physical contact with an infected person or animal. Monkeypox also can be transmitted from person to person through large respiratory droplets or through direct contact with body fluids.

Symptoms may include fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes. The news release says an infected person will also present with firm, deep-seated and well-circumscribed lesions.

Was it awfully painful afterwards? I take morphine daily for all my medical issues but mouth pain is a thing unto itself..
Are you going in and have it done while you're anesthetized? Or will you be awake?

After the pulling process, it is not too bad. I was awake for it, just using Novocaine.
Had to take some Ibuprofen for about 5 days for light headaches. Overall, not so bad.
I have 3 left to do.

Awake and having Novocain. I will take a Valium before I go there though. I love my Valium..

Back in the old days, we could get it for cramps. Now, there are many, many hoops to jump through to get Valium. Speed used to be used for dieting, too. Try getting it, now. Ah, the "good" old days. Better life through chemistry . . .

Yes, my sister who has major stress disorders and phobias cannot get it. My dr took years in learning to trust me enough to prescribe it. Between her and my pain management dr I feel blessed. It was a long haul finding decent drs in this tiny town I live in. For my cancer though I do go across the bay bridge to Johns Hopkins.

Did I read here somewhere that the pox tracker was only being updated m-f?

The tracker is not the one that is being updated M-F (if I recall correctly). The sources of the data (various .gov, hospitals, etc.) are the ones that are limiting when they update the numbers. Some are limiting to when they update their numbers to M-F, and I remember one of them (I think in the UK) said they would only update on M, W, & F.

MONKEYPOX
Third Probable Case of Monkeypox Detected in San Diego
The case, which is being forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation, is unrelated to the other two cases reported on Wednesday

By NBC 7 Staff, NBC LA Staff and The Associated Press • Published 3 hours ago • Updated 3 hours ago

Officials with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency identified a third probable case of monkeypox Friday.

The case, which is being forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation, is unrelated to the other two cases reported on Wednesday.

The person in this case, recently traveled internationally and is in isolation, is symptomatic and is doing well, said the HHSA.

The other two cases reported have not yet been verified by the CDC.

“All three individuals with probable cases of hMPXV here in the region are doing well and are managing their symptoms in home isolation,” said Wilma J. Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Most individuals who become infected experience mild to moderate symptoms and the risk of contracting the virus remains very low for the general population.”

Concerns over monkeypox were elevated in May because of cases that have popped up in unusual locations, such as the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. Monkeypox is usually found in parts of Africa. Cases in Europe and the U.S. are rare.

As of Friday, the CDC has confirmed 113 monkeypox cases in 20 states and DC.

"The current monkeypox situation is constantly evolving and subject to change," the California Department of Public Health said after a case was reported in Sacramento last month. "CDPH is closely monitoring monkeypox transmission in the U.S. and California to ensure rapid identification of cases. The risk of monkeypox to the public is currently very low based on the information available."

Here's what to know about the disease rarely seen outside Africa.

What is Monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a virus that originates in wild animals like rodents and primates, and occasionally jumps to people. Most human cases have been in central and west Africa, where the disease is endemic.

The illness was first identified by scientists in 1958 when there were two outbreaks of a “pox-like” disease in research monkeys — thus the name monkeypox. The first known human infection was in 1970, in a 9-year-old boy in a remote part of Congo.

What Are Monkeypox Symptoms?
Monkeypox belongs to the same virus family as smallpox but causes milder symptoms.

Most patients only experience fever, body aches, chills and fatigue. People with more serious illness may develop a rash and lesions on the face and hands that can spread to other parts of the body.

The incubation period is from about five days to three weeks. Most people recover within about two to four weeks without needing to be hospitalized.

Monkeypox can be fatal for up to one in 10 people and is thought to be more severe in children.

People exposed to the virus are often given one of several smallpox vaccines, which have been shown to be effective against monkeypox. Anti-viral drugs are also being developed.

On Thursday, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recommended all suspected cases be isolated and that high-risk contacts be offered the smallpox vaccine.

Please note this data is from Monkeypox and reflects only CONFIRMED cases for the 24 hours of the 15-16 of June '22.
..obviously no set of #s is going to be accurate, that was never the point. What we can see, though, by comparing the same sources #s over time is the trajectory.. .. remember too you cannot see a # in isolation and be alarmed if you do not know the population #s exposed, the diseases' normal rates of infection and expected courses etc. More importantly, in general terms, we can see when the illness has made it into our own communities.
