If you watch this at the point the thick smoke is when they would have performed the crash astern. It also show that the pier it struck is next to the ship channel. This looks like a terrible accident.Brick Suit

Ship appears to have lost power twice before impact with the bridge.
In this sped up clip, note that the ship's lights are on at first, then turn off. After the lights return, the ship appears to lose power one more time before the power returns again, but by then it's too late.

Baltimore bridge thoughts.
Weather was clear.
Departing ships have assigned harbor pilots.
Visibility was good.
There are many possible causes.
Most likely: A mechanical failure of a key ship's system such as a jammed rudder.
Least likely: A deliberate collision with the bridge.

For those that think the Francis Scott Key Bridge crash looks “very deliberate”
Here is a video showing what seeming shows the ship lost power twice.

Very hard to believe that it is accidental, with all the ironic symmetry it poses to what is going on in the wider worldIf you watch this at the point the thick smoke is when they would have performed the crash astern. I live close enough that I heard the crash of the bridge coming down - and it was LOUD. I thought it was a super low flying airplane at first. I took that bridge every day for work. Only other good commute options are 1 of 2 tunnels. But certain things are prohibited like propane tanks, acetylene tanks, etc. in the tunnels. So tradesman are screwed, or will have to violate the prohibitions.
That initial video is pointing down into Baltimore/the port. So the ship was leaving (heading towards the camera). That port is screwed for a while. There is a cruise ship that is home ported there -it ain't going anywhere. I think most BMWs (cars) come in thru that port as well. Lots of farm equipment leave from this port.

times like these I'm grateful I don't watch TV- was bad enough to wake to it on my news feed, without it inundating all the other senses too. This is what I woke up to.
News showing a horrible collapse and news conference
Very hard to believe that it is accidental, with all the ironic symmetry it poses to what is going on in the wider world
-and yet I've seen unbelievable, but true none the less, coincidences occur with my own eyes. Not to mention the Lord is not mocked, but has his own wicked sharp sense o' humour.
:: shrug :: I think we can be forgiven if we're all a bit jumpy and need all the i's dotted and t's crossed before we completely let go of our questions.
I'm waiting on my "ship guy" to chime in lol- particularly interested in how easily one could shut down or commendeer the electrical systems and if they had space and time to do so from the time they left till the time they hit the crash site.
ETA: what a fabulous campaign ad though: "would YOU want Biden to be the one at o' dark thirty "answering the phone" if this if it WERE an attack on American soil?"
Francis Scott Key, the guy that wrote the National Anthem, now do you get the big picture?
Barges hit bridges fairly often. This is a bigger version. Terrorists would likely have gone for daytime rush hour for maximum newsflash. There would be no reason to fake power outage before it hit, because terrorists claim victory. A covert act of war would target the port capabilities. Time of day would matter only for logistics. I'm not sure faking a power outage would matter. This looks like a horrible accident on the surface.
The hazmat routes in the area restrict certain types of cargo on some roads. This bridge didn't appear to restrict hazmat materials. There is one known semi in the water.
Rerouting hazmat cargo by road will be a hassle in addition to all the other issues. My coworkers in the area will be deeply affected. This is frightening.
This is a great video if you can catch it in time. Times EST (see time at top of frame):Here is the live stream camera that caught the bridge strike. It is still running and if you back up you see the impact and events before it.

Not a conspiracy theorist but...
with the bridge down all traffic will be diverted to the harbor tunnel...
the movie 'daylight' comes to mind
Loss of power is most likely one of the generators tripping offline. Power blinking back on is another kicking on and then it trips off. It happens. Had it happen multiple times when I was at sea. Pilot realizes what is happening and does the only thing he/she can and orders crash astern. With the wind pushing them towards the pier there is nothing more they can do but watch. It takes a long way to stop a ship that size or even maneuver it to avoid a strike.
As for the master being Ukrainian? That’s a nothing burger. There are a large number of ships officers that are Russian or Ukrainian. It is great money for them. Probably a third of the the officers we used to see on foreign vessels were Ukrainian or Russian.
I would NOT take that the 695 loop around to the west during rush hour. That is almost always some of the worst traffic in Baltimore. I'd just plan for more time and take the tunnels. Probably the bigger (4 lanes each way) I-95 tunnel. I-895 tunnel is only 2 lanes each way and has size restrictions... if possible.Probably most of the through I-95 traffic will be routed on I-695 inner loop around the north side. Hopefully that NE side has improved in the last 15 years.
Someone competent like Elon...
