Eric Duncan needs an attorney ASAP and hopefully some young hot-shot or older person with a name will take the case on, even if he can't pay for it. Why? Because he is almost certainly legal next of kin and while he might be prevented for being in the same room with a quarantine patient; there is no reason in the world they can't suit him up and let him see his father through the glass. In fact, Eric may very well be his US legal guardian at this point, because Mr. Ducan can't make decisions for himself. I mean it may get complicated in this situation because a judge is already involved and the quarantine laws are different than usual. But if Eric is next of kin he has an absolute right to know about his father's medical condition, what treatment is being done and probably to see him (even if they use skype or cameras for safety). They can't just bar him from the hospital if he has proof of kinship; now I think Mr. Duncan's father may be alive, in which case he might be next-of-kin but it would be the same thing.

This is really starting to "smell" in more ways than one...

I thought he was able to see and talk to his dad via Skype? Or was the the other relatives only?

Then again, Duncan's condition now may be such that they don't want the son to see him :(

In a statement, the hospital said it was "standard with hospital patients who are unable to make decisions on their own" for a representative to make "decisions about patient access and communications."

if he is unable to make decisions on his own, then it means he cannot communicate, or is a coma.......? guess no one has durable power of attorney for him, i guess alot of folks dont think of such things to take care of health care or other personal concerns if one is incapacitated. but id think his son, the nearest next of kin would have some pull. or maybe they are just blowing off the son.

they couldnt let him peek inside a window to look at his dad? but perhaps there arent any windows. and i thought it odd when offered to let him skype the son said hed do it the next day. if i traveled all that way to see my dad, id sure want to at least do the skype right away and check on him.

IMHO, they've got themselves a "guinea pig" that no one of import is going to cry over who they're going to experiment upon to the fullest as opportunities present themselves. In rushing to the US, Duncan should have figured that was a distinct possibility.

Thomas Eric Duncan is going to need body guards if he lives and this virus kills others. He'll be the most hated man in the US (other than Obama).

Can you imagine the ill will towards him if he makes it and it spreads?

OK, then Duncan has two sons? A 13 yr old and a 19 yr old?

Louise Troh left Duncan after a falling out and came to the US when the now 19 yr. old was little (around 3 or 4 yrs. old). I've never seen anything to indicate that the 13 yr. old is Duncan's son.

On the radio this morning, there was an interview with Louise troh's pastor. The church is Wilshire baptist. He said he had visited her a couple of days ago, and she was fine. (Dead man walking?)

Oh, I just realized. It's October.
This will be our first Ebola Halloween.
Little virus factories roaming the neighborhood. Knocking on the door.
First real parties of the Holiday season.
Whether is cooler perfect time for exchanging body fluids.

Exciting times.

Oh, dear. I did not consider that.
IN TYPICAL TEEN IRREVERENCE and contempt for everything that adults insist is "NOT FUNNY" expect to see a good portion of the costumed halloween crowd dressed as "EBOLA VICTIMS" with mock blood coming out of eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and some will even fake soiled pants, running around with a "barf bag" full of candy treats!!

Ok I had the names wrong, but the son who traveled 100's of miles to see his Dad may very well be next of kin and needs a lawyer - obviously a 13 year old wouldn't qualify for this job. As for durable power of attorney, things get complicated even when you are trying your best; much less just landed in the US to join your Stateside family. My Mother left what she thought was a complete durable power of attorney only for us to find out that it was only for health and thankfully she was judged able to "sign an X" a few days before she died so we could start taking actions required to insure her care continued (like pay for it). Mom had even left copies of the documents pinned next to her phone and in her wallet; it just wasn't enough for California.

Seriously, the whole family doesn't need Jessie Jackson, they need a good lawyer asap because the fiancee has no legal rights at this point except in terms of sharing a child with the guy; so either a parent or adult child would be the next of kin.

And of course teens will dress as "Zombi-Ebola Victims" they dressed up during the Black Death in the 14th century too and danced the Dance Macabe (Dance of Death) some things don't change and are best ignored rather than encouraged...

On that note, my youngest son saw a picture of a halloween costume called OBAMA-CARE-BEAR and asked if he could be that for halloween... lol

If Duncan is on a ventilator, then he is- at minimum- sedated to the point where he's not conscious. More likely he's comatose and the vent, dialysis, etc is just keeping his body going for the time being.

IIRC (and I may not), this "son" hasn't seen Duncan in many, many years. Sort of a strange family... I believe I read that Louise left at least a couple children in Africa (and they were fairly young) when she came to the US.

But I absolutely agree that as long as this kid has proof he IS Duncan's son, the hospital has no legal right to bar him from the premises. Assuming they've got Duncan in a negative pressure room, letting next of kin at least see him through glass windows would seem to be a no-brainer.

Unless he's not alive. Even if his appearance is horrifying, that's not a reason to bar close kin from seeing him- you sit them down with a counselor, and prepare them for what's going on.

Smells like old fish is right!

Thomas Eric Duncan died Wednesday morning in Texas, according to the hospital where he had been treated for Ebola.

Duncan, the first person ever diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, died at 7:51 a.m., according to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Tex.

“He fought courageously in this battle,” the hospital said in a statement.” Our professionals, the doctors and nurses in the unit, as well as the entire Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas community, are also grieving his passing. We have offered the family our support and condolences at this difficult time.”

Sure the son could skype his dad last night... my arse, he was already dead and now they are covering their butts.

Maybe he was in condition to do that last night. When Ebola patients go sour, they apparently can go sour fast.

So, if Duncan was already dead, maybe, then why make him "die" today? if they were really waiting for the relatives, they would have let them see him, no matter how bad he looked. Family can see burn victims etc..again, why today?

Nah... he was on a vent... by definition, pretty much sedated into unconsciousness, or else comatose (my guess).

Then again, it's remotely possible that they're simply telling the truth and he just now died. I know that's a stretch for this readership, but ...

Ugh, this is way too true. We don't do trick-or-treating, but our town has a thing where the kids go to all the stores in the afternoon to get tons of free candy. I'm not surprised by teenagers in all kinds of creepy, gory costumes. But there are lots of toddlers dressed as things like vampires and bloody brides. As a mom I do NOT get it!!

Legal rights for what? Did he have money? I suspect not. The estate winner will get to pay his bills.... and I don't expect those bills will be a pittance.

I would have agreed with you if the hospital had not just said today that the son decided to wait until today to skype with his dad, after traveling hundreds of miles and knowing his dad was in very bad shape.

It just doesn't seem rational to me.

I won't be surprised if the family sues because he was discharged days before and was not diagnosed the first time with ebola.

The threat of the spread of Ebola IS GREATER RIGHT NOW, THAN IT HAS BEEN IN ANY OTHER CASE in the USA, OR ANY OTHER TIME dealing with him or other Ebola patients here.

When someone DIES of Ebola, they become a veritable DEADLY BIOLOGICAL BOMB, BECOMING 165 pounds of packed, live virus! There is MORE CHANCE TO SPREAD THE DISEASE NOW than at ANY other time during his care!
If ANYONE BECOMES INFECTED AT that hospital it will be within the last few days or next few as his dead body is dealt with.
God help them stay safe during this VERY VERY DANGEROUS TIME. I hope he is cremated quickly for the safety of everyone.

Skype can be used to simply see someone as well. It doesn't have to be two-way interactive.

Right... and the son could have been allowed to Skype with Duncan from where he was going to college! He sure didn't need to be in the hospital for that! I do suspect that Duncan was already dead, hence the hospital not allowing the son to even view him through a window. It just doesn't make sense otherwise.
