First, my life isn't in danger! Thanks for the concern.
I went down, out the door and smoked my cigarette.
The corner of Broadway and Yamhill is one block over.
The corner of Park and Morrison is fifty feet from my door.
There are about 100 Snowflakes milling around that corner. They are in the street, on the sidewalks etc. Some of them are leaving, but most are not.
There are several Police SUV's parked there.
As I came up, a riot squad on the jump boards of their SUV came down Park and turned east towards Morrison and Broadway, which is one block north of Broadway and Yamhill. Clearly PPD is getting ready to move.
It is raining pretty hard now, which may thin things out. The Snowflakes are looking for trouble now.
I also saw a group of 25 so called Anarchists walk south along Park, past a couple of additional PPD SUV's. They also were looking for trouble. One of the things the Snowflakes do is spread out to make it harder to control them.
The eastbound MAX is now blocked completely. The westbound MAX is also likely blocked. The police are also under pressure to clear the MAX lines so this can't go on much longer. The Snowflakes are in the intersection, they are on the street and they are in Pioneer Square, probably 300 or so of them. I don't plan to go there!
At any rate, things are heating up nicely in Portland, and I don't see how tear gas, flashbangs and riot squads deploying can be avoided now.
And here I was worried about AlfaMan when he went into DC. LOL

For those of you who think this isn't a very fast police response by the PPD, you need to understand the politics involved. It is amazing the PPD is doing this at all. Clearly, the November riots shook up the political leadership class here in Portland.
It may take a while, but the tear gas and flashbangs are going to be deployed. I'm not sure if there are any big events, like a Blazer game or anything, that needs the MAX, but the MAX isn't going to be blocked for hours and hours more.

Hmm, well the protest leaders ended the demonstration and everybody is going home. What could happen is the small group of anarchists will start running around downtown acting crazy, or it may actually be over. It is a huge win for Mayor Wheeler and the PPD. They stared down the beast and prevented a whole bunch of tear gas and flashbangs.
However, it is not uncommon for the protest to end, the adults go home, and the little punks go do their thing.

Well, this isn't going to go over very well locally. Tear gas and flashbangs everywhere. People running around like crazy. I can guarantee you windows are now being smashed as the Snowflakes go off. This is the usual, predictable end to any "big" demonstration we have here in Portland. We are going to have small groups of Snowflakes, psuedo anarchists running around acting crazy. This could go on for hours now.

They're making an internet star on the live feed out of some guy with glasses who said, "Tonight I've been tear-gassed, I've had my hand broken by the police, and I've had a rubber bullet shot into my eye" (unclear how that happened, as he was wearing glasses and they weren't broken)--but he goes on to say "but it was worth it because I'm out here standing up for what I believe in."

Well, if Wheeler pulls this off by 9pm he will get a huge political boost. It all depends on what the anarchist subgroup does now. They have before run around for hours raising hell. If they don't, then this is a huge victory for what passes for the forces of law and order in Portland. We won't know until the am whether there was any significant property damage.
