LIVE: Man shot outside UW event for Milo Yiannopoulos

by: KIRO 7 News Staff Updated: Jan 20, 2017

A man was shot at a University of Washington protest in the campus' Red Square outside an event with controversial Brietbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos.

Seattle Fire Department said that the man has possible life threatening injuries.

The University of Washington College Republicans invited Yiannopoulos to speak on Friday. People have been waiting outside for the event since around 5 p.m.

Protesters showed up on campus around 6 p.m. and began clashing with police.

Protesters threw rocks, fireworks, and other items at officers. They blocked the entrance to Kane Hall, but Yiannopoulos’ speech still started around 8 p.m.

Apparently, the Seattle anti-Trump protesters shot and killed a Trump supporter at a speech at the University of Washington. Or at least sent him to the ER.

Man shot, with possible life threatening injury, when violence erupts during protest at UW campus

http://q13fox.com/2017/01/20/one-pe...-violence-erupts-during-protest-at-uw-campus/

SEATTLE — Violence erupted at the University of Washington Friday night as protesters opposed to a right-wing speaker at the campus and his supporters clashed. Bricks, firecrackers and paint were thrown at officers and others — and then a gunshot rang out.

A man in the crowd crumpled to the ground. Police said they were working to remove one person with “a suspected gunshot wound to abdomen” from the crowd. Seattle Fire Department confirmed an adult male was shot and had a “possible life threatening injury”; he was rushed to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.

Hundreds of protesters had gathered at the UW campus to oppose the speaking engagement there by right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos. Tensions grew as masked protesters attempted to block the doors to the building where Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak, and others who had wanted to attend the speech.

Fights also broke out between the protesters and Yiannopoulos’ supporters. Police in riot gear moved in when the violence erupted.

Tensions grew further as anti-Trump protesters who had been marching through Seattle’s streets earlier in the night showed up at the UW campus to join with the other anti-Milo group.

Milo’s speech went on at the UW about an hour later than scheduled, but then Seattle police said the protesters outside “throwing bricks, other items at officers,” the police tweeted. This was before they announced a person had been shot.

Earlier, Q13 News reporter Steve Kiggins said that it appeared that police had detained a few of the protesters, who were chanting “USA, no Trump, no KKK, no Fascists” and who were trying to block the doors to the UW building where Yiannopoulos was to speak.

His speech, originally set for 7 p.m., was pushed back until at least 8 p.m.

They need to work. There were tons of job postings on both the Portland and Seattle twitters tonight. They're bums.

I prefer the draft. They are forced to work. It would weed out the snowflakes (#NoMoreSafePlaces) and those that dodge the draft become Mexico and Canada's problem.. All 18-25 serve, no exceptions

The Snowflakes and BLM types are not unemployed: they are unemployable! They do not have the moral character, the integrity, the work ethic, but do have arrogance, and a sense of entitlement that I have seen daily in Portland in the so called "homeless."

They may not be worthless, but they are indeed USELESS. And we have an entire generation of them totaling in the tens of millions. This is why Trump may be doomed from the beginning, unless he can change the CULTURAL VALUES OF THE USA.

It looks like Portland dodged the bullet tonight. While a whole lot of chaos was unleashed, blocked MAX lines, lots of pepper spray, flashbangs and tear gas used, we "apparently" don't have the kind of property damage we had in November.

The Snowflakes learned a valuable lesson tonight. IF you break the law, even the uber liberal Portland political class will unleash the PPD on you. If that had happened last night in DC at the Deploraball, we wouldn't have seen the chaos in DC we saw today.

They're making an internet star on the live feed out of some guy with glasses who said, "Tonight I've been tear-gassed, I've had my hand broken by the police, and I've had a rubber bullet shot into my eye" (unclear how that happened, as he was wearing glasses and they weren't broken)--but he goes on to say "but it was worth it because I'm out here standing up for what I believe in."

What he BELIEVES in?

What---

anarchy?
lawlessness?
disrespect of his fellow Americans?
hatred of his own country?

Just what does he "believe in" that he IGNORED police warnings to disperse? He'd already HAD his chance (for a LONG time) to protest, and now it was time to go home. But....no.

But did he bother to vote ?

Man critically wounded during UW protest; 'person of interest' in custody

by KOMO Staff

Saturday, January 21st 2017

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referred to Milo Yiannopolous as belonging to the alt-right movement. He does not
. KOMO News apologizes for the error.

SEATTLE -- A protest at the University of Washington over a controversial speaker turned ugly Friday night. Seattle police report that a 32-year-old man had been shot in the stomach and had to be removed from the crowd.

The man was shot behind Kane Hall. Seattle Fire said the victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. He was in surgery late last night.

A person later turned himself into UW police in connection with the shooting. He has been described as a person of interest and is being questioned.

UW Police Chief John Vinson said police haven't identified a motive for the shooting.

Witnesses told KOMO News that the victim was trying to keep the peace at the height of tensions during the protests.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray issued a statement, saying police will release more details as they become available. "Seattle has a long, proud tradition of speaking up and speaking out, but we will not tolerate violence of any kind, against any person. Thousands of Seattleites, including myself, will speak up and march peacefully throughout this weekend."

University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce also issued a statement saying,""I am absolutely heartbroken that someone was shot on our campus during tonight's protest. I have been very proud of our students who, to the best of my knowledge, acted with restraint, whether they were planning to attend the event or protest it peacefully. It is an outrage that anyone would resort to violence in the middle of this otherwise peaceful protest."

Bricks and paint balloons were thrown at police and other members of the crowd. At some point, police responded with pepper spray.

Police also were investigating an assault at Northeast 41st Street and University Way Northeast. The assault victim had a possible head injury.

The crowd mushroomed in size as hundreds of protesters from a Westlake Plaza protest and march arrived at Red Square on the UW campus.

Police were refusing to let people in. Several police were being hit with paint balloons, police said. One young man was hit in the face.

The young man claimed he was pulled into a crowd and then beaten for wearing a hat in support of Trump.

"The beat him like a bunch of piranhas, they just attacked my son," said his father. "I tried to get in there and tried to defend him and they started slugging me too."

"I seriously stood on the edge, just trying to listen to what they were saying," said the man. "I did nothing to agitate them. The most I did was stand up there, wearing this hat. All I wanted to do was hear what they were chanting about and read their signs."

"They took his hat from him," said the father. "When he went to reach for it they just stated beating the hell out of him."

Milo Yiannopoulos, a writer for the conservative website Breitbart, was scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m. Yiannopoulos was banned from Twitter in 2016 after his followers targeted an African-American actress. He has also been criticized for his involvement in GamerGate, which "claims to promote ethics in gaming journalism but has been condemned for its treatment of women," according to CNN.

Protesters began gathering hours before the speech at the UW's Red Square.

Crowds of protester then lined the entrance to Kane Hall as VIP's and general ticket holders made their way inside to attend Yiannopoulos' speech. Police said at one point some protesters in masks attempted to rush the entrance, forcing police to push the line back and stop letting people inside.

Protesters then started chanting, "shut it down" in an effort to get police and the university to cancel the speech, while people waiting to get inside chanted, "let us in!"

After Yiannopoulos' speech, Seattle Police made the crowd wait inside Kane Hall for about an hour, until the crowds outside calmed down. Attendees were then ushered through a back stairwell, under a parking garage that came out at 15th Avenue, away from Red Square. A few protesters were there to greet the crowd, but police said the exit was peaceful and there were no further incidents.

A local neighborhood online blog had someone post this today---obviously "political" in nature, even though well-hidden, but a veiled insult to ALL of us "on the other side" who did NOT feel the need for "healing"---yet the mods of the site (which prohibits political posts) let it stand:

Hi neighbors, I know that our family is not alone in our sadness, fear and pain so I thought it'd be good to reach out and find our what people are doing to heal. Stress takes its toll on us as individuals, couples, families and communities, and it's important to find healthy outlets. One thing our family is doing is artwork. Even if it's small and only takes five minutes, we're trying to create something everyday. One thing my wife and I have started is taking blank paper, colored markers and taking turns drawing on the same sheet. We set a timer and either draw for a set time, like 30 seconds, or just draw one line at a time, passing it back and forth until the timer goes off. It's been a really great way to connect with one another and relieve some of the stress that's been building. The amount of stress many of us are experiencing can be quite damaging so we're trying to come up with ways to combat it. What works for you? Let's share!

By the way, don't know if John Lewis' big march got any traction, since we've had flooding rain and thunderstorms in Atlanta most of the day. But I haven't heard anything about it on any news outlets--so I hope NOT.

Well, shoot--it DID go on---they waited till afternoon when we had a lull in the rain.

Police are "estimating 60,000" marching---here's a news article:

New police estimate: 60,000 in Atlanta as the march continues at the Capitol

IMG_0591.JPG

Original: Organizers have announced a 30-minute delay for today’s Atlanta March for Social Justice and Women, as rain continues to sweep through metro Atlanta.

The event is now expected to get underway at 1:30 p.m., starting at the Center for Civil and Human Rights near the city’s downtown Centennial Park. It’s one of more than 600 marches planned for today across the nation and internationally, all timed to coincide with the Women’s March on Washington.

MORE: Things to know about today’s Atlanta women’s march

MORE: Thousands descend onto Washington for women’s march

Supporters said they want to raise awareness to what they view as threats to civil liberties and human rights under the new GOP-led Congress and administration of President Donald Trump.

In Atlanta, organizers are hoping for at least 10,000 participants. Speakers include Georgia congressman John Lewis and House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, D-Atlanta.

1 p.m. -- At least a few hundred people have already gathered at the Center for Civil and Human Rights in downtown Atlanta, with more streaming in by the minute, according to our colleagues on the grounds.

Among them were Sue Hunter and Terry Hamrick, who were riding to the center on MARTA, starting at the Midtown Arts Center station.

“It’s just water,” they said of the torrential rain that had been pelting the region for hours. “We’re still going to go out there and march for justice.”

They also brought with them a sign, which our colleague Michelle Baruchman captured on her phone:

Marchers%20-%20Sue%20Hunter%20and%20Terry%20Hamrick.jpg

1:20 p.m. -- A soft rain is still coming down as protesters gathered, readying for the march to the state Capitol.

Our colleague, Rhonda Cook, says signs are everywhere. Among them: “A woman’s place is in the revolution” and “Hands off my uterus.”

Many families are on hand. Colorful umbrellas dot the scene. Participants said they have not been discouraged by the rain.

Lee Ann Jones, 59, of Atlanta, said the last time she had been at the center was to celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling on same sex marriage. Jones said she came today “to bring some visibility to social justice issues.”

She said she was surprised by the size of the crowd and it made her hopeful.

Allison Perry, of Decatur, brought along her 4-½-year-old daughter, Vivienne: “I feel like a lot of our rights are being taken away,” she said.

Other signs signaled support for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee who lost to President Donald Trump in November.

“I’m With Her,” read one, repeating Clinton’s campaign slogan.

Georgia congressman John Lewis, the civil rights icon who is scheduled to speak to the crowd today, was also popular among the crowd: “I stand with John Lewis,” read one sign.

Trump lashed out at Lewis after the Atlanta Democrat called Trump’s presidency illegitimate.

1:40 p.m. -- Speakers have started addressing the crowd at the Center. The crowd has swelled; our colleagues estimate that several thousand people are here, despite the stormy weather.

1:50 p.m. -- Gerald Griggs, with the Atlanta NAACP chapter, tells the crowd that he wanted to get involved in the march because his 8-year-old daughter asked him if the “bad man” won, and whether he was going to do anything about it.

With the crowd chanting “not one step back,” Griggs tells them that his message today is to tell the president, “we’re not going back from civil rights.”

The crowd boos when Trump’s name is mentioned, but those boos turn to cheers when Griggs says, “we’re the people.”

1:55 p.m. -- There are about 10,000 people now at the Center for the march, according to an estimate given to us by the Atlanta Police Department.

2:00 p.m. -- Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, D-Atlanta, is now up. John Lewis on deck:

.@repjohnlewis: We have a moral obligation to fight and never lose hope. We must vote like we never have before.

2:09 p.m. -- U.S. Rep. John Lewis -- who drew President Donald Trump’s ire when he called the then-president elect illegitimate -- is taking the stage at the march.

He is joining Stacey Abrams, who is speaking. The march is in Lewis’s congressional district, which Trump had blasted as “horrible’ and “crime infested “ in a tweet last weekend.

Lewis faces a supportive hometown crowd. Marchers jockey to take his picture. As Lewis prepares to speak, the crowd starts to chant: “Fifth District!”

2:14 p.m. -- John Lewis is ready: “Got on your marching shoes?” he asks the crowd. “Let’s do it!”

The crowd stretches to CNN Center, according to our colleagues.

2:24 p.m. -- They’re on the march:

2:31 p.m. -- Meanwhile, in Chicago:

C2tcrrdXcAAPxnI.jpg

2:47 p.m. -- More from John Lewis, who is walking with the marchers. From our colleague, Rhonda Cook:

"You look beautiful. You look fine and you're ready to agitate." He said they have a "moral mission and mandate to agitate."

"Something. You can't sit on the side. I want to thank you for standing up, speaking up, getting into trouble. Necessary trouble."

Crowd chanted "thank you, John." Someone yelled:"I love you."

Lewis "I love you, too."

"I know something about marching! Don't let anybody turn you around!" @repjohnlewis

3:10 p.m. -- A good shot of the crowd at the start of the march, from the Center where it started:

3:13 p.m. -- If you’re following along online, here’s an update of where the marchers are:

The #AtlantaMarch is now passing CNN and Phillips Arena
3:05 PM - 21 Jan 2017 · Atlanta, GA

3:16 p.m. -- Former state senator and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jason Carter (yes, he’s Jimmy Carter’s grandson) is marching:

C2uHh9_WgAIZT3g.jpg

3:23 p.m. -- Our colleague, Rhonda Cook, reports that some marchers haven’t started yet and are still at the Center (where the march started in downtown Atlanta).

They’re getting impatient, she said, and chanting, “Let’s go!”

The front of the march, meanwhile, is nearing the state Capitol, where the march is scheduled to end.

3:40 p.m. -- The leading edge of the march has reached the state Capitol. At least 10,000 marchers are gathered in Atlanta, most of them still fanned out along the 1.7 mile route. The tail end of the march has finally left the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, where the event began.

3:48: p.m. -- The crowd of marchers in Atlanta has grown to 15,000. That comes from the Office of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. Marchers are gathering at Liberty Plaza at the state Capitol.

4:02 p.m. -- Marchers are still filing into the streets around the state Capitol, although there will soon be few places for them to squeeze in.

Law enforcement has blocked off Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near the entrance to the downtown Connector. Capitol Drive is blocked off at Memorial Drive. Washington and Mitchell streets are also blocked off at the Capitol building.

4:30 p.m. -- Our colleague, Raisa Habersham, spoke with Elizabeth Brady, 27, a math teacher from Clayton County, who marched today in Atlanta. Here’s why she said she marched:

“I don’t have one specific reason -- it’s everything. The direction the country is taking is scaring me and I just wanted to come out and walk with people that had the same mindset that I did and who are just as afraid as I am.

I have two things most personal to me: One is healthcare; my brother is Type-1 diabetic. He’s been under my parents’ health insurance since he was 11 years old and he turns 26 this July.

If Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act goes away, my brother won’t have anything to pay for his insulin. And it’s not his fault he has that disease and I don’t think that is something he should be faulted for.

And also, I’m a woman and I’ve gone to Planned Parenthood and I’ve gotten free birth control for the last eight years and because of my free birth control I have not brought in kids to this world I haven’t been able to care for.

I feel like that has helped our economy overall, just because I’ve been able to make that choice not to have children.

4:42 p.m. -- 60,000 is the new estimate from the Atlanta Police Department.

“The march has been peaceful and without incident,” said APD Sgt. Warren Pickard in an email.

4:50 p.m. -- From Georgia Equality’s Jeff Graham:

Jeff Graham @JeffGrahamAtl

I've been marching in Atlanta for nearly 30 years and have never seen anything like today! #AtlantaMarch #WomensMarch #StandUpToTrump

I couldn't help but notice the excerpt from one of the "protesters" above---a Cllayton County school teacher (this county has probably THE WORST record of education in the entire state of Georgia--worse even than Fulton, now)

And also, I’m a woman and I’ve gone to Planned Parenthood and I’ve gotten free birth control for the last eight years and because of my free birth control I have not brought in kids to this world I haven’t been able to care for.

She's 27, she said---so that means she's been on birth control since age 19.

And while I appreciate her not bringing children into the world she wouldn't have "been able to care for", I can't help but compare that to the difference with my generation---when if you didn't want kids---YOU DIDN'T HAVE SEX.

And when sex before marriage was generally accepted by the majority of society as a sin at worst and as socially irresponsible and morally undesirable at best.

What this last election has CLEARLY demonstrated, if nothing else, is the growing (and I fear un-bridgeable, without a major revival and return to our roots) DIVIDE BETWEEN THE MORAL vs. AMORAL or IMMORAL extremes in worldview between the citizens of our country.

This election showed that this divide is almost evenly 50-50---and those who still hold somewhat "moral" viewpoints barely have the upper hand.

Either this is the beginning of a revival...........or it is the sun setting on the last flickering lights of the "shining city on a hill" that America once was.

what they did was get out the colored markers and start "drawing."

They sound like adults with children---not college-age snowflakes.

The world has gone mad.

If America "were" ever conquered by a foreign power, these useless snowflakes would be hyperventilating and the conquering army wouldn't even try to send them to a work-camp; they'd all just be summarily shot....

OK - they have had their hissy fit and marched and chanted......

Now let the adults get on and do what is necessary, so that some of you can go out and find jobs when you graduate.

Oh, you weren't expecting to graduate, or work??

You hadn't thought that far ahead??

We noticed.

It should be noted that the shooter in the Seattle UW campus incident was released from police custody after witnesses and a video surfaced to corroborate the shooter's claim of self-defense. The incident was only partially caught on camera but you can see a smaller Asian male wearing a yellow hat being attacked by at least one thug in a black leather jacket. This thug (also rumored to be wearing brass knuckles and swinging wildly at yellow hat guy and others) was the person shot by said Asian male.

It is interesting to note that The UW president, mayor of Seattle, and even someone earlier in this thread all believed the shooter was at fault before reviewing the facts of the case. The UW president and mayor in fact were 'praying for the victim and hoping for a full recovery all while decrying gun violence.'
