Thanks for chapter...
Ok I likely shouldn't say anything.... Thing is Ron is supposed to be so smart/great planner. He buys his kid a Hummer for his 18th birthday KNOWING he is going to leave Alaska for Military 6 yr hitch (I didn't look this up so if I messed up exact numbers I am sorry) in a couple weeks.
Ron KNOWS he will not be able to use it for yrs (and when he does get home it will be for days at a time) Ron has plenty of cars/trucks/planes for Josh to use when he is home. So the Hummer sits for 10 yrs. (I recall Josh saying his brothers could NOT drive it when he was gone)
Then he gets married so they crate up the Hummer and ship it down under. $$$$ He buys his wife a new model Hummer. IMO it would make more sense if he bought his then instead of having a 11 yr old model and new one.
Then spend $$$ to uparmor it and have to beef up motor to handle load and then trailer to haul enough fuel to get anywhere....
So why not buy (in Austrailia) a crew cab dsl pickup? For example a 7.3 Ford one ton with mild lift and run flat tires. MPG would be close to 20 and armored/loaded over 15 (likely)
Mainly the idea of having H1 set for over a decade then ship it half way around world and rely on it. (belts/hoses/tires/all lube) would have to be replaced...

I LOVE the story. I realize you needed a way to ship all the Class III stuff/ammo. maybe a modified Snow bug instead? I just think of cost to ship stuff to Alaska and then to ship it to Austrailia.... Ufta.

Larry: You're really going to be crying in a couple of chapters!

Patience Grasshopper, all will be explained eventually!

18th birthday - Josh want Hummer, Dad buys Josh Hummer! :D

Basically, when you're that rich, money doesn't mean as much to you. He wants his Hummer, thinking he was going to be there for years, so he had it shipped along with a shipment of parts for the plane, so it didn't cost as much as if he would have just shipped the hummer.

i am really sounding like a broken record but I so much enjoy this story and yes it must have been fun to spend all the money on what ever your really wanted for the story - again thank you for the new chapter - of course looking forward to more soon

Thanks for chapter. By the way spending $$$ does not bother me at all. It just seemed a waste to buy Hummer when you know he can't use it (or let others use it)
I love full auto... Just don't think the risks (legal) make the advantages worth it. There is not much (other then waste ammo) a M-16 can do that a AR can't. Belt fed/true machine guns are another animal.. (of course)
I am glad they have found a way to avoid taxes... :) I just can't stop thinking with all the $$$ and as open as they are about weapons that nobody up there gets into any trouble and offers up info on weapons/explosives/etc to work out a deal.

Larry minn: Trust me, with the SEALS, shooting FA isn't wasting ammo- they tend to hit what they're aiming at. Their ammo budget just for training used to exceed seveal other commands total ammo costs. When you're putting thousands of rounds downrange per week rain or shine, you tend to get to be a VERY good shot.

The first thing the SEALS teach about FA weapons is how to fire a controlled burst- in other words, trigger control. You'll rarely hear of a SEAL burning through a whole mag FA unless they're doing their Break Contact drill, then the FA fire is supposed to be suppressive fire.

Thanks for chapter. I was amazed they got rid of Isabel so easy and cheaply. It was too good to believe that all the kids found great spouses. (he has a line on a possible winner)
Down Under. UFTA What a mess..... Why did they bug out? They had a secure (two actually) location with food/shelter/water/defense. It might have been good idea (since they have $$$ and ability) to have gotten a chopper/pad at their home. I really thought he would help out with rescue (former Medic/paramedic/SEAL)
When they did bug out those Hummer/trailers showed the weaknesses. They were unable to even consider making the trip with fuel on board. WIth trailer they were (committed) to a path until they found place to turn around/killed all bad guys. Also its hard to drive and shoot. If someone gets hurt they have to abandon one rig. IMO a uparmored crew cab pickup with onboard fuel tanks/supplies with husband/wife in each. She can drive/he shoot/visa/versa. IF one truck taken out everyone can pile into other one. (second truck could have trailer if needed as they would hang back few hundred yds.)
For dang sure (If I had millions of $$ and weapons he has) I would set up (mounts) for rockets mounted off Hummer with switchs inside. (duct taped to roof rack aimed forward/backwards/sides with labled electronic switches.) At very least mount claymore to front (with heavy backplate) to clear people infront. (ok nobody ever said I played fair)

Yep... Only one (down under) and a couple (Up North) area SEALS or trained 1/5th close to level. There is more of a arguement (down under) as a semi auto is against the law so why not have full auto? All it would take is Isabel to try to blackmail the family with calling ATF on them.

Larry: Isabel was facing felony spousal abuse and theft by fraud charges, she cut her losses and headed back home with almost $1 Million vs. 10-20 in the slammer and no money. She was in no position to say anything to anyone.

Re: Down Under - with the General's Letter, as a Military Contractor, it was all legal. Josh is the one that doesn't think things through, remember? ;shr:

I deliberately underplayed the escape scene. Imagine miles and miles of Rodney King level rioting, burning buildings, and armed gangs stealing what they can.

Now imagine an unarmored truck trying to get through that!

Their Hummers were rebuilt by Q, and included Rigid Kevlar Armor Panels - the same stuff the Apache Gunship uses to stop 20mm AA fire! Q used thinner/lighter panels designed to stop 50 caliber fire.

Q couldn't mount the rocket launcher for the same reason he couldn't build them for the Saudis - the Friggin Liberal Australian Gov't! As a millitary contractor, Josh was covered by the Military fig leaf, but Q was a civilian.

The armored hummers have roof hatches, and the LAWS rocket is a good improvised compromise. It gives them anti-armor rockets, but increases their risk of getting hit.

Remember the scene when they arrived at the station and Sheila's Dad thought they had been through WWIII? Even with the kevlar armor, the body was pockmarked with bullet impacts that didn't penetrate thanks to the kevlar.

Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

I was excited that there must be new chapter as I didn't recall them getting to her fathers station either. :( :( (You really should post that now so everyone thinks WE were mistaken) HINT HINT. :)
I wouldn't think Uparmoring would be much harder (Unless Q was using premade panels??) (I understood he cut/formed pannels on a custom basis?) I did suggest they modify the truck in a similar vein. Just that the trailer would not be needed. (What can I say I have driven with trailers a lot and realize you can NOT back up if you can't keep your head up. (all the time) where a single unit you can take a look and back up with a glance every now and again.
I have been taking lots of (Liberties) with this story for a number of reason. First I LOVE the story line. (hope it gets published) 2nd it is already written (I understand) so my comments won't affect flow of story. (but might be used for changes before publishing)
Such as reason for Bug Out... Her parents call via HAM that they were facing trouble they barely beat back, Military/Government announcing they were taking over personal homes/supplies for greater good (meaning power brokers). Hoards of refugees with many unfriendlys who have taken weapons/explosives. Heck even the houses/wells being damaged by quake/quake caused fire burns house down. Maybe because of contractor the houses NOT being ready/unsafe... I would have thought after 10 yrs as a SEAL his decision making under stress (and didn't they spend almost a entire day packing to leave?)
Did I mention I love this story? I understand they couldn't arm the hummers externally before SHTF but in days after is where the duct tape /bailing wire comes out. Having to stop/unbuckle/grab weapon/stand up/ (get shot at) to return fire is not a great idea.
At least have the lead unit be two person so they can react to threats. (no trailer/run a couple hundred yds ahead to check out roads/conditions with radio connections)
Now post the chapters with rest of trip and arrival at station.. (Please?)
Otherwise I will have to stick MAD MAX in VCR.

Larry,
You need to write a story. Then we'll have another to read!:rdog:
I just love these stories!!!

Shewolf:

Don't you already own a copy of the story? :shr:

I'm posting every other day, and writing like mad to get Reniassance Man finished. I'm 23 chapters into the re-write, and I'm less than 10 years into the story line, which can go on indefinitely since Cyborgs can live virtually forever.

Patience Grasshopper! :D

Larry: WAB's right, you really should write your own story! :D

as always I have enjoyed the recent story chapter posting and of course want you to quickly post the next book - I enjoy this story so very much - it makes me think about things that need to be done - of course not with the money they have done it with or the amount of arms but still thoughts of what needs to be done as soon as possible - thank you againd for your fine writing :eleph:

I tried a story on another forum... Lets just say it didn't gather a following. :( It also took WAY TOO MUCH TIME. Then folks complaining about every little spelling error. ;) I also found it rather (dark)... The story "turned" in a rather disturbing fastion for me.
I do have a couple ideas and will try again when things calm down... I have a outline that is (IMO) still too close to "Long Road Home" The situation/cause is different as well as NO prepositined supplies BUT a (mental) prepositioning system. I.E. As I travel I look over businesses/areas and think "If I got stranded here what could I beg/borrow/buy/steal to help me get home" (mainly first three unless owners are dead) Maybe this winter. :)

Couple things. Maybe you could have Q be contacted (want to know he survived) :)
I will have to buy the CD but don't dare right now. I would spend all night reading stories. A chapter every other day is great. (every day would be better) :)
BTW I was wondering when Bear was going to age. He was (Wild guess from memory) over 40 when Ron was 13 so figured he should be ageing. (you covered it well)
Another thought. Nothing ever came up again about the lost Nuke. Or was that the reason the 007s stayed on? "For preventing a international incident and the loss of a tactical weapon and preventing severe enviromental damage we are going to extend the use of two 007 type copters for 30 more yrs"
I was wondering with all the radio gear (and shoe phone) that Josh didn't call Shela's parents, HIS parents before bugging out. (or they call him when they find out about earthquake/wave.) \
A excellent story. (section)

larry: I've got a couple of REALLY dark stories, like the Vigilante I wrote when I was really pissed off about something on the news.

Sometimes you just have to go with it, and hope they turn out.

Re: Lost Nukes - Just Like MIB - "It never happened" - the 007's were a present from a grateful nation for saving them from all of the above. They didn't own them, the gov't gave them the use of the helicopters.

re: Q- Patience Grasshopper, there's a whole nuther story yet. Can you handle another one? :D

Then if I get off my duff and finish writing Daedalus, that would be Book V in the series. I'm still trying to work on Reniassance Man and Castaways II - I've got Castaways all written, just waiting to write several chapters about Scuba Diving in the Hawaiian Islands. Seems everyone wants you to buy their book instead of putting out the info on hot diving spots in Hawaii besides Maui, which is the exception to the rule. :shr:

WAB: My latest post (yesterday) WAS the end of the story! :d

The Kids are Alright is my new story.

Fleataxi

There is a hole between the stories. Jake had just left to go to the outback and had not made it yet. His arrival at the outback station, his going to Alaska Also Annes death and funeral is missing.

Wab: Make sure you check my last posting - Chapter 89 is the end of the story.

Here's the last bit of Chapter 89 (After Anne's death):

The next day, Ron and Nancy’s kids, their families, Steve, and Bear - along with his family, met at the site of Ron’s lodge near HelpMeJack Lake for a private funeral and interment next to Roy, Oliver, and his pups just like she had requested. Every one of Ron’s sons pitched in to dig a deep grave for their Grandmother. Ron, Steve and Bear each moved a shovelful, but left the heavy work to the men with the strong backs. After a brief funeral service, including Anne’s favorite Bible passages, she was buried next to her Husband and Dog near the cabin she always called home. Once everyone had left, Ron spent some final time with his Mom, and knelt next to her grave. He brushed some dirt off her tombstone and whispered “Rest Easy Mom, The Kids are Alright!”

I checked, and all the chapters are there from 75-89, so you might have missed it. check my last post in Allakaket Airlines.
