WAR China Signals a Military Response to a Taiwan Visit by Pelosi

China has always maintained that Taiwan is part of China and that Beijing is the true government of China.
Taiwan has always maintained that China is part of Taiwan and Taiwan, formally known as the Republic of China, is the true government of China.
The United States maintains that Taiwan is a sovereign nation.
The United Nations doesn't.
The Japanese once owned Taiwan and used it to launch an invasion into China during WWII.

Based on the above, it would appear to most that the US has maintained the independence of Taiwan as a strategic colony to contain China militarily and China has advanced enough to not allow it to continue.

It is only a matter of time - and that time is nearing.

Me thinks this, as happens so often, is turning into a big nothing burger. Does make one wonder what transpired behind the curtain while all the WW3 rhetoric was plastered about on all means of media.

The bigger a temper tantrum the CCP exhibits over Pelosi's visit, the bigger the ripple effect and the further the mask slips.

As it already is, between Iran, North Korea, Pakistan and India, and the Russo-Ukrainian War the NPT is a dead treaty. Beijing's actions are only going to further encourage other powers in "bad neighborhoods" to acquire sufficient "canned sunshine" and means to deliver it to dissuade problem neighbors.

Also those direct threats against a member of Congress aren't going to be forgotten by either this or the next Congress. That could prove to be very expensive.

I have not read the "China is going to attack the USA in November" thread. But if that thread has any truth to it then China certainly would stick to their existing plan.

Well I don't love her and I am disappointed in China. I thought they wanted to be friends with us with all of the promises they were making, but they didn't follow through.
They wanted to be friends with us when Donald Trump was President not when they have an in the pocket half wit administration.

do I "need" an "article"?

Doesn't silicon COME from sand?

Yes, silicon comes from sand. The more pure the sand the higher quality silica comes from it. The silica tiles on the space shuttle came from an area in Indiana I believe-purest sand in the country is mined there.
If anything we can ship sand to the Taiwanese.

China has now set up live fire air and naval exercises for the foreseesble future.

China has set up a defacto NO FLY ZONE AND NAVAL BLOCKADE AGAINST TAIWAN

BRILLIANT.

This is the wait and see the diplomat mentioned

Plus China sided with the Taleban in criticizing the Drone strike. A few chinese planes full of the $80 billion us weapons left behind to various terrorist groups. China is moving against us.

This was from Quora:

"....sand is silicon dioxide. First Sand or Silicon dioxide is reduced chemically to metallurgical grade silicon, (MG silicon) . MG silicon is not super pure and still contains impurities. To make silicon for semi-conductor applications or solar applications, the silicon has to be ultra pure with 6N purity levels. Therefore, MG silicon is converted to another chemical called Trichloro silane (TCS), which is in gaseous form. Then this TCS is subjected to chemical distillation process to get ultra pure TCS.

Then this ultra pure TCS is again converted back to Ultra Pure Silicon in solid form using Chemical Vapor Deposition process. These are grown as rods with the CVD process and these are polycrystalline silicon.

For making chips, we need single crystalline silicon. Therefore, these solid rods are broken down into chunks and melted in quartz crucible at > 1415 degree centigrade and using a process called Czochralski process, single crystal silicon crystals are grown from silicon melt. These single crystals grown as cylinders are then cut into thin wafers and after several other grinding, polishing operations, the thin ( about 600 to 700 microns) silicon wafers are manufactured.

These silicon wafers are then used as starting materials to make chips......"

******

I still think we are in early days of a drill gradually hardening into a fullblown Naval Blockade. Beijing may pulverise it rather than let the west come defend or liberate it. Rendering it useless as a strategic prize. It will soon be time to repatriate all industry offshored as anything stamped "made in china" will be bonfire fodder.

China begins major Taiwan military drills after Pelosi visit
Sebastien Ricci, with Beiyi Seow in Beijing and Amber Wang in Taipei

5-6 minutes

China's largest-ever military exercises encircling Taiwan kicked off Thursday, in a show of force straddling vital international shipping lanes after a visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi left Taiwan Wednesday after a trip that defied a series of stark threats from Beijing, which views the self-ruled island as its territory.

Pelosi was the highest-profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, and said her trip made it "unequivocally clear" that the United States would not abandon a democratic ally.
It sparked a furious reaction from Beijing, which vowed "punishment" and announced military drills in the seas around Taiwan -- some of the world's busiest waterways.

The exercises, which began around 12 pm (0400 GMT), involve "live-firing", according to state media.
"Six major areas around the island have been selected for this actual combat exercise and during this period, relevant ships and aircraft should not enter the relevant waters and airspaces," state broadcaster CCTV reported.
The exercises will take place in multiple zones around Taiwan -- at some points within just 20 kilometres (12 miles) of the shore -- and will conclude at midday on Sunday.
Taiwan's defence ministry said it was closely watching the drills.
fe0e49cb0f303462054e9b9f54c55afd

"The Ministry of National Defence stresses that it will uphold the principle of preparing for war without seeking war, and with an attitude of not escalating conflict and causing disputes," it said in a statement.
Beijing's nationalist state-run tabloid Global Times said, citing military analysts, that the exercises were "unprecedented" and that missiles would fly over Taiwan for the first time.
"This is the first time the PLA will launch live long-range artillery across" the Taiwan Strait, the newspaper said using the Chinese military's formal name, the People's Liberation Army.
The Group of Seven industrialised nations has condemned the drills, saying in a statement there was "no justification to use a visit as pretext for aggressive military activity in the Taiwan Strait".

- 'Preparation for actual combat' -
Taiwan's Maritime and Port Bureau issued warnings on Wednesday to ships to avoid the areas being used for the Chinese drills.

The Taiwanese cabinet said the drills would disrupt 18 international routes passing through its flight information region (FIR).
Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific said it had ordered its aircraft to "avoid going through the designated airspace zones around the Taiwan region".
The manoeuvres will take place along some of the busiest shipping routes on the planet, used to supply vital semiconductors and electronic equipment produced in East Asian factory hubs to global markets.
Beijing has defended the drills as "necessary and just", pinning the blame for the escalation on the United States and its allies.
"In the current struggle surrounding Pelosi's Taiwan visit, the United States are the provocateurs, China is the victim," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular briefing Wednesday.
A Chinese military source also told AFP the exercises would be staged "in preparation for actual combat".
"If the Taiwanese forces come into contact with the PLA on purpose and accidentally fire a gun, the PLA will take stern countermeasures, and all the consequences will be borne by the Taiwanese side," the source said.

- 'Some limits' -
Taiwan's 23 million people have long lived with the possibility of an invasion, but that threat has intensified under President Xi Jinping, China's most assertive ruler in a generation.
The island is once again a flashpoint between the United States and a Chinese leadership keen to project strength ahead of a crucial ruling party meeting this autumn at which Xi is expected to be given an unprecedented third term.
On the mainland, at what is said to be China's closest point to Taiwan, AFP saw a batch of five military helicopters flying at a relatively low altitude near a popular tourist spot.

"China's announced military exercises represent a clear escalation from the existing baseline of Chinese military activities around Taiwan and from the last Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1995-1996," said Amanda Hsiao, senior analyst for China at the International Crisis Group.
"Beijing is signalling that it rejects Taiwan's sovereignty."
Nevertheless, analysts have told AFP that China is not aiming to escalate the situation beyond its control -- at least for now.
Titus Chen, an associate professor of political science at the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan, said: "The last thing Xi wants is an accidental war."

Frankly I’m disappointed at the hyperbolic response leading up to Pelosi’s Taiwan visit from certain "China experts" in the West. If a Chinese state-media pundit claims that China will attack a foreign delegation, and you believe it, then you’re probably not an expert on China.1/

When China issues violent threats, people in Taiwan heighten our level of alertness and observe actual actions that follow the remarks, such as limited displays of force. We don’t ignore the comments, but we should focus on avoiding civilian accidents in the process. 2/

We focus on keeping people safe during these displays, instead of panicking over proclamations of full war, which would require months to prepare. We even maintain interactions with Chinese govt agencies that are NOT issuing exaggerated remarks, such as on a local level. 3/

Communist officials are encouraged to issue violent threats, but not expected to follow through. It’s a method of communication that requires reading between the lines. If Western “experts” allow targeted remarks to affect policy, they effectively help spread disinformation. 4/

So no, China won’t launch WWIII. China might express dissatisfaction, but that returns us to where we draw the line for yielding to China’s demands. I don’t think Taiwan should actively provoke China, but a trip unrelated to national sovereignty shouldn’t be seen as such. 5/5

South Korea cancels flights to Taiwan amid Chinese live-fire military drills
Anders Hagstrom

2-3 minutes

South Korean airlines have canceled all flights to Taiwan as the Chinese military surrounded the island to conduct live-fire exercises Thursday.
Korean Air canceled flights to Taiwan through Saturday, and Asiana Airlines canceled flights through Friday, at which point it will reconsider whether it is necessary, Reuters reported Thursday.
China is holding live-fire military exercises surrounding Taiwan following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the self-governed island. Pelosi is the highest-level U.S. official to visit there since Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997.
Chinese authorities were furious with her trip, arguing it broke the U.S. one-China policy, which states that the U.S. acknowledges, but does not condone, China's claim of sovereignty over the island. It also states that the U.S. will not keep formal diplomatic ties with the government of Taiwan.

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby joined America's Newsroom with Bill Hemmer on Thursday. Hemmer questioned him regarding the White House's communications with Pelosi leading up to the trip.
"You would concede that the White House tried to talk her out of it? That was pretty obvious," Hemmer asked.

"I wouldn't concede with that," Kirby responded. "I think we gave her context and information. We gave her an analysis of what it was going to look like, not just in this one stop with all the stops that she's making on this important trip."

The aggressive behaviour of China, the PLA and the Eastern Theatre Command, as shown in this graphic, will provide valuable insights into Chinese military thinking and capacity in the days ahead. 1/14 Image

2/ First, the coming days will permit us to observe how China and the PLA might think about conducting a naval blockade of Taiwan. In essence, they are telegraphing their operational approach so we can war game ways to subvert it in future.

3/ The map, with the live fire areas published by the Eastern Theatre Command, clearly plots out where the Chinese think the key operating areas are for their strategic intimidation of Taiwan and for the conduct of an illegal blockade in the future.

4/ The groupings of naval task forces, and their readiness for sea for this activity, will provide good insights into levels of short term responsiveness, command styles, and contemporary Chinese naval tactics (and how good they are with their own doctrine).

5/ The coming days and weeks will allow observations about the sustainability of large scale PLA naval deployments. Just because you have a lot of ships, it doesn’t always mean you can coordinate them, or sustain all of them at sea over long periods.

6/ Second, the coming days will allow observation of PLA air-sea integration, as well as how they integrate these operations with space-based capability and EW.

7/ Given their almost automatic response to react in this way (which makes the Chinese predictable), how the air and naval capabilities interact will provide insights into exploitable weaknesses.

8/ Third, the coming days and weeks will provide lessons on the effectiveness of PLA joint capability and the capacity of their Eastern Theatre Command. This is a relatively new ‘combatant command’ (formed in 2016), and it is the one responsible for Taiwan. Image

9/ How well this new command is able to command and control the variety of forces (naval, air, cyber, missile, etc) that will be deployed to intimidate Taiwan over the short to medium term will be an area of great interest to multiple military and think tank observers.

10/ Reports such as annual U.S. DoD report to Congress on China are invaluable sources of information on PLA developments. But nothing provides better insights into the actual capability of a military than seeing them deployed ‘in the field’ (or at sea).

11/ You can read the latest DoD report here: media.defense.gov/2021/Nov/03/20…

12/ The highly predictable surge in Chinese military units, and their likely aggressive posture, is full of potential for incidents with U.S. and Taiwanese forces. Recent behaviour of PLA towards Australian and US aircraft and vessels provides a baseline for their approach.

13/ Beyond the strategic messaging about ‘don’t mess with the PLA’, the PLA will almost certainly use this as an opportunity iron out issues with its joint command and control. They are decades behind the west in these kinds of operations.

14/ But, we have been given a priceless opportunity to learn about the Chinese joint military capability in real time, and to assess its strengths and weaknesses. The Taiwanese, Americans, Japanese, Australians and others will be watching closely. End

PLA sends in 100+ warplanes on day 1 of military drills near Taiwan
Teddy Ng

9-12 minutes

The island’s defence ministry said the 11 DF series missiles were fired between 1.56pm and 4pm. It is the first time mainland missiles have flown over the island.
“The defence ministry condemned the irrational actions to undermine regional peace,” it said.
Mainland state broadcaster CCTV posted footage of the launches online.
Andrei Chang, editor-in-chief of Canada-based Kanwa Asian Defence, said one of the missiles was a DF-15B, a short-range ballistic missile with a range of up to 700km.

‘Precision strikes’
In two short statements, the mainland’s PLA Eastern Theatre Command said it conducted precision strikes in specific areas over the east of the Taiwan Strait on Thursday and multiple conventional missile launches that afternoon.
“All the missiles hit the target accurately, testing the precision strike and area denial capabilities. The entire live ammunition launch training mission has been successfully completed, and the relevant sea and airspace control has been lifted,” it said.
CCTV footage showed several Dongfeng series ballistic missiles were launched from unknown bases on the mainland, and launched at targets in waters off Keelung port, Hualien and Taitung counties.
PCL-191 rockets landed in waters near Pingtan, an offshore island of Fujian province opposite Taiwan, on Thursday afternoon. The PCL-191 can carry eight 370mm rockets to hit targets up to 350km or two 750mm Fire Dragon 480 tactical ballistic missiles capable of flying up to 500km.

Chinese defence ministry spokesman Tan Kefei said the drills were clearly targeting collusion between Taiwan and the United States.
“The Chinese military will do what they have said,” Tan said in a statement. “The collusion between Taiwan and the US will only plunge Taiwan into a deep disaster and bring serious harm to Taiwan compatriots.”
A report by the Global Times said the ongoing drills would include long-range rocket launches and conventional missile tests.
Japan condemns launches
The Japanese government said five Chinese ballistic missiles fell withing Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi said it marked the first time a ballistic missile belonging to the Chinese military had landed within the waters.
“This is a grave issue that concerns our country’s national security and the safety of the people,” Kishi said. The Japanese government also lodged a diplomatic protest with the Chinese government.
Massive drill kicked off
On Thursday, the PLA kicked off large-scale air and naval joint drills encircling Taiwan that will run until noon on Sunday, in an unprecedented war game by the mainland against the self-governed island.
Multiple drills are taking place in six areas, according to an announcement by the PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command which oversees Taiwan Strait, after Pelosi landed in Taipei on Tuesday night. She left Taiwan on Wednesday afternoon and state broadcaster CCTV announced the drills started at noon on Thursday.

The exercises indicate that Beijing is ramping up its intimidation campaign targeting Taipei in the wake of the American congresswoman’s visit, after the mainland repeatedly warned it would respond with “the fiercest countermeasures”.
It’s the first time the PLA has staged such a massive and complicated war game in what it deemed a de facto blockade of the island with almost all the PLA drill areas taking place across the median line that divides the Taiwan Strait and also covering the sensitive eastern coast of Taiwan.

Beijing sees Taiwan as a renegade province to be brought under mainland control, by force if necessary. Most countries, including the US, do not recognise Taiwan as an independent country and acknowledge Beijing’s one-China principle. But Washington is against any attempt to change the status quo by force.
Besides live-drill exercises involving ground troops, the navy and air force, the Eastern Theatre Command said it would conduct conventional missile tests to hit waters off the island’s eastern coast, the home of Taiwan’s air force.

US and Taiwan step up deployment
A US Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol plane and American MH-60R anti-submarine helicopter Seahawk entered an area to the southwest of Taiwan where the PLA is conducting drills close to Kaohsiung around noon when the war games were getting started, according to photos posted to Twitter.
Taiwanese media reported that the Taiwanese air force was scrambling Mirage 2000 and F-5 fighter jets early on Thursday to monitor the situation before the PLA started its war games.

Taiwan on alert
Taiwan’s defence ministry said it was closely watching the drills.
“The Ministry of National Defence stresses that it will uphold the principle of preparing for war without seeking war, and with an attitude of not escalating conflict and causing disputes,” it said in a statement.
Reuters, citing an unnamed Taiwan source, reported that mainland navy ships and military aircraft briefly crossed the Taiwan Strait median line on Thursday morning.
Around 10 mainland military ships crossed the median line and remained in the area from Wednesday night through midday on Thursday, and multiple PLA aircraft briefly crossed the median line on Thursday morning, said the person, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Taiwan deployed missile systems to track PLA Air Force activity near the median line and Taiwanese navy ships remained close to the median line to monitor PLA Navy activity, the person said.

Recalled notice
Taiwan has revoked a notice asking vessels and planes to avoid an additional area that it thought would be included in the mainland war games.
In a notice on Thursday morning, Taiwan’s Maritime and Port Bureau identified the site as near the eastern county of Hualien, taking the total number of site to seven. It also said the exercises would continue until Monday.
But the notice was recalled in the afternoon when the PLA did not increase its drill areas.

Neighbours warn against ‘provocative action’
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has reached out to mainland China’s Southeast Asian neighbours to denounce Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan.
“The provocative behaviour of the US on the Taiwan issue is not accidental, but a meticulously planned farce,” Wang said in a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday on the sideline of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) meeting.
“The US plot of ‘using Taiwan to contain China’ will never succeed, and it will not change the historical trend of Taiwan’s inevitable return to the motherland.”

On Thursday, Asean foreign ministers warned against “provocative action” over the Taiwan Strait. The situation “could lead to miscalculation, serious confrontation, open conflicts and unpredictable consequences among major powers,” the ministers said in a joint statement published on Thursday.
Vietnam’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday it would continue to follow the “one-China policy” and called on all parties not to escalate tension in the Taiwan Strait.

Mainland drone flies over Quemoy
A drone from mainland China was detected flying over Quemoy, Taiwan, on Wednesday night – hours after Pelosi departed the island from the trip that angered Beijing.
Taiwan’s armed forces said an unidentified aircraft flew over Quemoy, and later identified it as a drone.
No mainland military aircraft, including drones, have conducted a flyover of Quemoy since the 1950s.

Taiwan’s armed forces said an unidentified aircraft was found flying over Quemoy on Thursday morning and later identified it as a drone. Photo: Reuters
Troops in Quemoy fired flares to warn the drone away and maintained combat readiness, the ministry said in a statement.
The Quemoy archipelago is just 3.2km off the coast of mainland China, but is controlled by the self-ruled island of Taiwan.
Taiwan armed forces said they used joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to “fully grasp” the situation.
The Taiwan military said it could “respond to emergencies immediately”.

PLA exercises encircle island
Meng Xiangqing, a professor at the National Defence University, said the exercises cover areas including an area to the east of Pingtan Island in mainland Fujian province, and off the coast of Keelung Port in northern Taiwan. The eastern area covers two Taiwanese military bases at Hualien and Taitung. He said the exercises would also target blocking the Bashi Channel and the airspace over Kaohsiung.

“The six major areas of this military exercise are the training areas closest to Taiwan island,” he told mainland state broadcaster CCTV. “It has formed an encirclement of Taiwan island.”
Destroyer east of Taiwan

Defence analyst HI Sutton said a mainland Chinese missile destroyer, likely to be a Type 055 Renhai class, was operating east of Taiwan on Thursday morning.

The Type 055 is regarded as second in power only to the US Navy’s Zumwalt-class stealth ship. It is designed to be a multirole warship, equipped with weapons to counter missiles, ships and submarines.

The destroyers are also equipped with the country’s most advanced integrated electric propulsion system, allowing them to travel up to 10,000 nautical miles without refuelling – 2½ times further than the navy’s Type 054 multi-role frigate, which is the most numerous of the PLA’s in-service warships.
