(N MN) Did a pretty substantial Walmart pickup order this morning...replenishing the "immediate" pantry and fridge after getting cleaned out royally by all the house guests over the past month.

The only sub was replacing my Plain Jane "everyman" bunch of bananas with organics because they were out. No complaints there. Eggs, produce, canned goods, frozen, baking supplies, cheese, sausage, laundry soap and even a can of Rustoleum spraypaint. All good.

Was very appreciative to the help. This one-armed bandit didn't need to be knocking around the store shopping, and those kids always get it right.

I was at Aldi around noon today and many MANY shelves were empty. However, I observed them bringing loads out from back room so assume a truck had just arrived. Virtually no canned fruit, very few canned veggies, no lunch meat. Cereals were generally well stocked with a couple gaps.

I also went to Dollar Tree and their food aisle was well stocked with canned vegetable. I didn't notice fruit. I was able to get six quarts of shelf stable milk by asking. They'd moved it into the soda aisle for some dumb reason and someone had soda in front of it. Virtually invisible to a shopper.

Prices are WOW. Butter was $3.47 # and eggs were $2.69 and graham crackers $1.75 at Aldi. Flour was low, but sugar stocked, no condensed evaporated milk but a decent amount of evaporated milk. A bottle of honey was over $7. The only things on my list I did not find were the condensed evaporated milk and lunch meat.

I was going to go to CVS but it was pouring rain and I know from experience that the road on the way there floods and I was not about to attempt driving through it. BTDT and don't intend to do it again. I think I'll just go online and order from them. Last time it went well so might as well do it again.

I haven't shopped for a month and can you believe I had ZERO items under Walmart!! I actually did have a few items I'd though of but didn't write them down so no Walmart today. Boy did that feel good.

I had a prescription for Plavix 90 tablets.
The Costless pharmacy filled it with 30 tablets and didnt tell me, just told me to transfer the script Back to MADIGAN PHARMACY. THEY didnt note that the owed me anything or short filled the prescription!
Luckily the military phamacy covered it.

I hit Walmart, Aldi, Trader Joe, and Publix. Most shelves were well stocked, although neither Aldi nor 3 Walmarts had plain cooked ham - I didn't bother to check at Publix because it's too high there.

Aldi and Trader Joe's didn't seem to be out of anything except ricotta in Aldi - I did find it in Walmart. Passing through the baby sections at two of the Walmarts on my way to the furbabies section (the third was just a neighborhood market - I really wanted ham!) I saw they had some baby formula - the shelves were maybe 20% full - but most of it was locked up and you had to look for someone with a key. A lot of the freezer cases near the meat and cheese aisles were filled with out-of-the-ordinary stuff - beer, soda, etc.

And the last chapter in the saga of the imploding watermelon: I had complained to Publix corporate, and they gave me the name and number of the store manager. They said they'd refund me for the watermelon, plus give me another one, AND....they gave me a free Rug Doctor rental and bottle of cleaner so I could get the stench out of my rug. Those Rug Doctor suckers are HEAVY - I'm hurting all over. And the cherry on top of this debacle? I was hurting and took a nap, and woke up to find the #(*$ dog crapped on the freshly cleaned rug. :(

I havent been to Trader Joes but I went to their website. It looked like an ad for a Chinese or Imported food store! Nothing, no brand I recognized. No ads for "regular" foods you see at the grocery store, like butter milk, eggs, miracle whip, vegetable oil, no kraft mac and cheese, no campbells soups,no spaghetti pasta or sauce, no oscar mayer, no brands of anything i recognized.
What is that store really like? Im not gonna drive 20 miles if its like the grocery supermarket that only had what they thought WE SHOULD EAT and because of THAT they went out of business pretty fast for a supermarket. (a supermarket with no popsicles or ice cream bars or treats)

I actually like Trader Joe's but you are right. They don't carry typical brands like Oscar Mayer. The do have frozen treats albeit not "Popsicle" brand. And they are very pricey

There is talk in Tupelo, MS about Trader Joe's coming soon. I hope so. We need more variety to choose from here. Walmart, Aldis, Sam's, and Kroger is all we have, unless you want to shop at GTR nastiness. I've heard a lot of good things about Trader Joe's.

THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP!
I was under the impression that they were a cut rate food store from the people here who shop there.
Im glad I posted this, because I would have been upset to drive 20 miles expecting to save some money and found everything MORE expensive than Fred Meyer (Kroger) grocery!

I bought a jug of Tide laundry detergent the other day. I rotate all my "stuff" and usually mark the month of purchase on the container. I didn't do that with the detergent jugs for some reason. I had to move some stuff around and when I went to put it all back I lost track of which was the newest/oldest etc. So I just looked at the amount on the different jugs ... and sure enough... shrink-flation. One of the jugs I remember was like 92 ounces and another "same size" jug was around 86oz. Obviously the 86 oz was the newer one, and in the very back it went. Turns out the jug was the same "size" but the dent/bump in the bottom of the jug was slightly larger.

I used to get the 88oz bottle of All Detergent for $6.97 on Amazon. It's now only available through "other buying options" starting at $10.75

Trader Joe's is mostly for cheap imported food, funky weird shit, trendy, but less spendy for the young urban climber type. I like their sauces and some of their snacky stuff. A regular weekly grocery store, it ain't.

Aldi is of the same corporation, but mostly stocks normal grocery items at good prices and quality. The oddball ethnic and funkier stuff that Aldi sells is more in line with ALL the stuff at Trader Joe's.

If I could get some European foods there, I would definitely shop there.

Trader Joe's is AMAZING and has an entire cult following - they sell only their own brands (the only "outside" brand I've seen there is Walker's shortbread), some of them imported from other countries like Germany (which makes sense since it's German based), many things you won't find elsewhere, and most are non-GMO. Unlike Aldi (each of the two separate companies is owned by a different brother from the same family) it's not cut-rate, but prices are reasonable, especially when compared to regular prices in stores like Publix and Food City. In fact, I used to drive almost 100 miles each way every so often to stock up on certain items, and thankfully we finally got one in the area after literally thousands of people begged them for years to open a store here via an email campaign and a FB group that alone had over 5,000 members. They do have basics like milk, eggs, meats, yogurt, etc., and lots of frozen ice cream treats as well as non-dairy ones.

Must get:

The frozen croissants -both chocolate and almond - are to die for. You proof them overnight and they're ready to stick in the air fryer by breakfast.

21 Seasoning Salute - A blend of 21 seasonings that you can put on all kinds of things - I sprinkle it on my burgers, pork chops, and more. They have all kinds of unique spice blends, and I've been having fun trying them, but IMO this is the best.

Cookie Butter - One of their most famous products. Not only great as a spread (or right out of the jar), but there are all kinds of recipes online to use it in.

Cookie Butter Sandwich Cookies - Another one to die for. Two very, very good butter cookies with a cookie butter filling.

Pizza Macaroni & Cheese with Pepperoni - Need I say more?

Pound Plus Chocolate Bars - A little over a pound of imported chocolate (milk or dark, plain or with almonds) for around $5 a bar.

Frozen Orange Chicken - One of their best sellers. I don't eat processed frozen foods from anyplace except Trader Joe's, because they're very good and unique, and generally non-GMO.

Sangria tomatoes - Little tomatoes in assorted colors; good for salads or just snacking. The teeny tiny Sprinkles tomatoes are really good too, but seasonal.

Cheeses - They must have over 100 kinds to choose from, and often come up with something new and wonderful.

Their brand of pasta is 99 cents for a one pound bag; imported pasta from Italy is under $2. They do have various kinds of pasta sauce, but I make my own.

They have a lot of produce items you won't find in most places, such as rainbow carrots, and they're famous for their "Two Buck Chuck" - cheap wines that reviews say are really good. (Can't say - I don't drink.)

Avoid:

Their baked goods are iffy. Some things are very good, like their blueberry muffins which I get almost every time I go there, and their raspberry kringle is also good but very sweet, but their breads are often dry - they're all organic with no preservatives and will spoil very quickly. Their sour cream donuts - awful. BUT...the good thing is, you can try something new every time you go, and if you don't like it, take it back (even if just the package is left) and they'll refund you, no questions asked.

Their pre-made burger patties are very tasty, but they shrink to half their size. I prefer the ones from Aldi.

The customer service is amazing - employees don't point you to a product you're looking for, they'll lead you to it. One day I was upset over something, and got into a conversation with the cashier (they're all very friendly). I was walking towards my car and heard someone calling me. It was the cashier, and I thought I must have forgotten something but no - she was chasing after me with a bouquet of flowers (they sell lovely ones) and gave it to me "to brighten your day."

It's my favorite food store; I'm there just about every week. Even if I don't need something specific, it's always fun to see what new products they've come out with since the last visit. I got some sparkling watermelon juice the other day; haven't tried it yet, but if I don't like it, all I have to do is take it back, so there's no loss.

NOTE: I'm not being paid by Trader Joe's for this review; it's just a wonderful store! :flngl:

I disagree. Their food is top-quality, not cheap crap. I'd rather eat their private brand than the highly processed garbage with often questionable ingredients from places like Kraft, General Foods, etc. which are cheap crap. No, it's not a "regular" grocery store, but it's a Mecca for people who appreciate good food. They have millions of loyal customers for good reason. And they do have lots of "regular" food.

I've been buying Kibbles & Bits from Amazon for my little dog. First purchase, it cost $10.13. Second purchase the cost was $13.00 and some change (for an 18# bag). It is now over $19.00 for the same size bag.

Haha...soooo....they pretty much exist for superficial fluff. You do you...but my budget is allowing for less and less of this sort of thing.

Agree that it's what Trader Joe's is all about though.

Yeah, you're right - so many of the things they carry - milk, eggs, yogurt, chicken, beef, flour, sugar, pasta, fruits, fresh and frozen veggies, cheese...all are "superficial fluff."

If you go to their website, there's a place where you can request that they open a store in your area. I did it numerous times, and from all my various email addys! :D

A clip from their website:

About Us

Trader Joe’s is a national chain of neighborhood grocery stores. We are committed to providing our customers outstanding value in the form of the best quality products at the best everyday prices. Through our rewarding products and knowledgeable, friendly Crew Members, we have been transforming grocery shopping into a welcoming journey full of discovery and fun since 1967.
At Trader Joe's, you won’t find a lot of branded items. Instead, you’ll discover a store full of unique and interesting products, along with everyday basics, in the Trader Joe's label.
Our buyers travel the world searching for products we think are exceptional and will find a following among our customers. To earn a spot on our shelves, each product is submitted to a rigorous tasting panel process, in which every aspect of quality is investigated in context of the price we can offer. If a product is assessed as an outstanding value, it becomes an essential part of the Trader Joe's shopping adventure.

We know that maintaining our everyday focus on value is vital, which is why we don’t have sales, we don’t offer coupons, and there are no loyalty programs or membership cards to swipe at our stores. Trader Joe’s believes every customer should have access to the best prices on the best products every day. To consistently deliver value:
  • We buy direct from suppliers whenever possible, we bargain hard to get the best price, and then pass the savings on to you.
  • We buy in volume and contract early to get the best prices.
  • If an item doesn’t pull its weight in our stores, it goes away, making room for another innovative new product.
  • Most grocers charge their suppliers fees for putting an item on the shelf. This results in higher prices... so we don’t do it.
  • We keep our costs low because every penny we save is a penny you save.
We want our customers’ experience while shopping in our stores to be rewarding, eventful and fun. Our helpful, friendly Crew Members take care in maintaining safe and inviting neighborhood stores; in crafting creative, informative signage to support our customers’ understanding of our products; and in creating a store environment that imparts adventure, humor and a warm sense of community.
Simply put, every time a customer shops with us, we want them to be able to say, “Wow! That was enjoyable, and I got a great deal. I look forward to coming back!

Mom and I used to go to the one in the big city once in awhile. It was about 1/4 the size of an Aldi. I don't know if that is their normal store size or not. It's just like any other store, there was some stuff we bought that we liked and some that the dog got. I would visit one occasionally, but the closest one is now 100 mile round trip.

I was signed up for Trader Joe's emails at one point
They are too far from us in uber liberal Charlottesville, VA
so quit shopping in that town after the election steal..not biden ....but spanberger. ...2 years before biden
I got emails all the time from them about their products that they were recalling
So if you shop there sign up for their email.

I don’t think Trader Joe’s is that expensive. It is a little more upscale than aldi but nothing near like Whole Foods. They are small stores and have their own brands. A lot of very good and interesting frozen foods. Good spices, nuts and a very good cheese selection. I think it is worth a twenty minute drive. If you Google what to get from Trader Joe’s there are tons of articles showing the favorites.

I like trader Joe's because quality is good and they have things other stores don't. They have a Ritz like cracker without soy..
Great cheeses and cheap wine. Its small and just a fun experience.
Although I live in a town of 40,000 we have Wal-Mart and Albertsons and local grocery.

Costco 100 miles away. Aldi and Trader Joe's 300 miles away.

Costco paper towels have gone up $.80 since Monday afternoon. Lots of folks buy them and not much else from Costco from looking in their carts.

Hi everyone, I went to Harris Teeter today (Easton, md) and the store was packed full of people ! I would have thought it was a holiday coming up, crazy lines. But, the store was fully stocked. No holes anywhere. The prices were another issue. Tilamook cheddar, 8 ounces was $6.50. I did not buy any. Also went to BJ’s and it was stocked and busy also. I wonder if this is the lull before the storm of shortages.
