Our town is around 45,000, but we have a Sam's, Aldis, Walmart, and Kroger. It's time we get a Trader Joe's, too. The nearest Trader Joe's is, at least, 100 miles away.

Until we got one (and before the scamdemic) I would occasionally drive almost 100 miles each way to stock up on my favorites. It was worth it!

We make a trip into the town 100 miles away on occasion. Not often, maybe, two or three times a year to take my mom to see her sister. I'll try to stop in there on my next trip, and stock up. I'm really anxious to see what all they have.

We stopped going to Memphis simply, because it is just too dangerous. I'm sure there is a Trader Joe's there. Still, that's 100 miles away, too.

I don't know what it is with the potatoes we get here. At the store, they look good. Believe me, I inspect them, before buying. Get them home, and the first time I go to peel some, they have black spots all throughout the potato. Sometimes, they are rotten in the middle. I've bought the 5lb,10lb, and 15lb bags at different places, and they are all the same. It's been like this, since before Covid hit. I have to buy the 15lb bags, now, just to equal a 5lb bag of useable potatoes.
I never by the bags because of this, I pick each and everyone of them.

Too many bad ones are hidden with the good ones in the bags. I think it’s done on purpose. V

If you go to their website and put in a zip code they'll give you a list of the closest stores. You might want to take a cooler if you go, then buy some ice. The website will also tell you what new products they have each month, as many are seasonal.

I heard that about Memphis. I used to take the Megabus to Atlanta on occasion for a day trip when I could snag the $1 ticket. I thought about visiting Memphis, but a driver told me that a passenger got mugged as soon as she left the bus, so that was the end of that plan!

According to their website, Memphis/Germantown is the closest to me. Not going there.

I been wondering that for awhile about McDonald's. We would order 2 combo biscuits and it cost 20 bucks . While we were eating it we saw whole families of 5 or 6 go inside. How the heck they afford that is beyond me.

OMG it's so expensive here! Once in a while we get 2 biscuit combos and 2 extra hash browns and it's $23!! We don't do it anymore a) it's too much $$ and b) we're all trying to lose weight!

Report from the Phoenix 'burbs:

My weekly grocery bill is up 30% from a year ago. It cost $70 to put regular unleaded in my SUV, up from $60 a month ago. A 16-pack of 60W light bulbs at Home Depot went from $16.XX a couple months ago to $26.79 today. And the temperature tomorrow will be 114F, up from 108F today.

Let's see... we're spending a little bit less each week at the grocery store than we did a year ago, but only because back then there were four kids living at home, and now, at least for 6 more weeks, we are empty nesters. (Two daughters will return from school at the end of July.)

I didn't see any price increases over last week at Smith's in NE NV. But there were absolutely no gallon jugs of apple cider vinegar. And cornstarch was almost completely wiped out. Most everything else was pretty well-stocked. For the first time in several months, they had media crema, so I bought four cans. (It makes the best sour cream substitute--way better than freeze-dried sour cream.) Last week there was a shopping cart full of masks, 10 masks for $1 per package. This week they dropped the price to 25 cents, so I got a few.

Gas was the real kicker today--$5.18/gallon. Of course, that was for the ethanol-free gas. I think regular 87 octane with ethanol was 10 cents less per gallon.

I just got back from Wegmans. I never shop there normally, but I have been craving some good fruit. 4 tiny apricots, almost $3.00. Three tomatoes, almost $4.00. And I paid over $10 for a half pound of roast beef lunch meat.

I am thankful every day for my pantry. We have been eating out of it for months now.

Well, I had to go to Aldi. I bought strawberries last trip, planning to make a cake with them the next day...but by the next day they were totally rotten so back they went. No skim or lower fat milk, no plain cooked ham, lots of empty spaces.

And to top off my week I had purchased a new refrigerator in September. It was defective, and three trips from a repairman didn't work, so I complained to the BBB and and Lowe's replaced it in January/February. Well, last night I went to get my dessert (I highly recommend Jonny pops!), and found they were all completely melted, and other things were defrosted. :o I'm on the point of rage; a repairman is scheduled to come Wednesday, but I don't want this piece of crap - I'm going to see if my credit card company can do anything. Meanwhile I ordered a small chest freezer from Walmart last night; it will be here tomorrow. I'm going to put the pricier things like meat in there.

I don't think a lot of businesses will survive this crazy inflation, shortages etc. Restaurants especially will be hard hit as people have to cut back more and more in order to pay bills. I know years ago when by a fluke my dh found out in June the factory where he worked would be closing at the end of the year. We immediately shut down all nonessential spending and eating out was first on the list followed by no new clothing, not using a/c, lower temp for furnace, cheaper foods, etc.

We are already seeing this happening to some extent, and I expect it will escalate as things continue to hit the dumpster or maybe I should say as prices head for outer space. I know two months ago when I went through the drive thru at Burger King ordering my usual from the "value menu" and finding how much it cost. I couldn't even enjoy eating it as I thought about the waste of money. Since then, I take my lunch when I go to town which is what dh and I did for years when our lives went into SHTF mode.

This is from the Associated Press, so if they are reporting it, you know it's bad.

No, you’re not imagining it — package sizes are shrinking

It’s the inflation you’re not supposed to see.

From toilet paper to yogurt and coffee to corn chips, manufacturers are quietly shrinking package sizes without lowering prices. It’s dubbed “shrinkflation,” and it’s accelerating worldwide.

In the U.S., a small box of Kleenex now has 60 tissues; a few months ago, it had 65. Chobani Flips yogurts have shrunk from 5.3 ounces to 4.5 ounces. In the U.K., Nestle slimmed down its Nescafe Azera Americano coffee tins from 100 grams to 90 grams. In India, a bar of Vim dish soap has shrunk from 155 grams to 135 grams.

Shrinkflation isn’t new. But it proliferates in times of high inflation as companies grapple with rising costs for ingredients, packaging, labor and transportation. Global consumer price inflation was up an estimated 7% in May, a pace that will likely continue through September, according to S&P Global.

“It comes in waves. We happen to be in a tidal wave at the moment because of inflation,” said Edgar Dworsky, a consumer advocate and former assistant attorney general in Massachusetts who has documented shrinkflation on his Consumer World website for decades.

For those with no Trader Joes in their area or its a dicey neighborhood, Amazon sells some of their branded items

Amazon.com : trader joes

I have a few of their products that I am a die hard fan, their Sweet Potato Tortilla chips and their fresh Tangerine Juice

Its not the kind of conventional store to get your brillo pads and grill charcoal, they serve the exotic palate and usually deliver on the hype on most of their products. My big complaint is lack of consistency, items go out of favor or its a seasonal item only. Used to be worth a trip before Thanksgiving for the import cheese selection for holiday gatherings but that may change in the near future.

One a related note to all this...Years ago, light bulbs were like 2/$1. I bought my house in 2008, and some of the original light bulbs are still going strong. Now light bulbs are more in the area of 2/$8, and although they claim to last for years, I find myself changing them every few months!

When I first started buying led bulbs, I put the date on the base of each bulb. Some lasted 3-4 years, others are still going strong at 6-7 years. I can't really attribute the difference to anything in particular.

I have the same issue. The new mandated bulbs suck or at least the ones, I have used. Totally untrue regarding the life span.

Neither here nor there.
We’re going shopping tomorrow, okay later today. I’ll report back if we’re able to purchase a large jar of siracha and also a bottle of sambul chili paste, this is a years supply for us for the most part. I suspect that this is true for most Americans. I will also buy, if available, a box of gogichun garlic chili paste.

I like trader Joe's because quality is good and they have things other stores don't.
FYI: YT has interesting vids about Trader Joe's......food through politics........I will not shop there IMO. Closest one is in Boulder!

Not sure about their politics and when I walk in I don't get hammered with some gay flags or vote this way or not.

Trader Joe's has some of the better quality food you can buy nowadays. Better ingredients without all the BS crap in it.

Their prices are better as well.

My favorite store. If they are into some sh*t...they can answer to God for it. I'm just tryin to feed ma fam.

Google European mail order food markets. One sounded good Yummy Bazaar.

OMG! Thanks, again. That site is exactly what I was looking for. I've already made out a list of items I'm going to order. Bourbon vanilla sugar, vanilla cream sauce, spaetzle, Barvarian sweet mustard, Ritter Sport candy bars, Milka candy bars, Delba German dark pumpernickle bread, and saurkraut with white wine sauce. We once were able to get these types of food items directly from Germany when Cary's aunts were alive. I have not been able to find these items anywhere, until now. I made this list out after only looking at the first few pages. I have no idea what else they have, yet.

You are going to like this one!

Bende - Simply The Best

I looked there to see if I could find the chocolate bourbon balls that Cary loves. You might know what I'm talking about. Dark chocolate round balls that are filled with bourbon. I think it's bourbon. We got those shipped to us from his grandmother at Christmas time every year. Thanks a bunch!

DD and I went shopping this morning. We keep pretty well stocked but I want to make chili this week so got the stuff to replace what I’ll use. One item in particular that has practically doubled in price are laundry beads. Used to be about $6.99 are now $12.99! We spent $130 and I haven’t kept track of many prices since I moved here but I felt like it was a lot for what we got. Also the shelves were very empty. Dad says they stock on Mondays but it wasn’t random items today it was everything. DD said they stock on Mondays so I want to go on Tuesday and just see if it’s any better. I was shocked.

The commissary is also out of propane and no date in sight when they will get it in. We have a charcoal grill so doesn’t affect us but will affect a lot. Wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Neither here nor there.
OC went to Sam's and Aldi today, I sat in the car and enjoyed the air conditioning, and there weren't any major holes. He got everything on the list except for the two things I forgot to put onto the list.

We went to the Thai and Korean grocery stores, no shortages there. Both very well stocked except for my favorite mung bean style vermicelli noodles, but those are always out, I got the last package.

Bought 1 large bottle of sriracha sauce, 2 small bottles of sambal chili sauce, 1 bottle of sambal chili paste, and 1 tub of goguchang garlic chili paste. So we have a years supply on hand, for ourselves anyway, counting what was already in the fridge.

Also bought some kimchi, noticed that that's now packed in plastic bottles, not glass. Kimchi is something I do go through a lot of and may need to learn how to make it if things really do go sideways.

The korean grocery store had plenty of purple yams and dikon radish in stock as well.
