Speaking of cold, when I go over to the cabin DH usually has a fire going in the wood stove over there. He's out cutting down wood and no fire, it was cold. But then again I had on flip flops and a tank top, with flannel pj bottoms. I'm comfortable in the house this way, but sometimes I have to put on a sweat shirt and compression stockings on my feet.

I found a bag with some sprouted potatoes in it, so DH is going to plant them.

I'm struggling with sadness today so I'm trying to stay busy. I'll get past this because

God is good all the time

Judy

I hope you feel better soon,

I ordered mine online from Walmart as there was better selection. Our home is very rustic, so I used branches the size of curtain rods and clips for the curtains. I also used brackets to hold the branches. I get a lot of compliments from them.

YES! Our house is very rustic, too. I've already thought about Cary cutting and fitting tree branches for use as curtain rods. That would go very well with the rest of the decor in my house. I see I'm not the only one!

Is there anything that I can treat all the equipment with to sterilize it?

Some people will char the insides with a torch or weeding dragon. You used to be able to get it irradiated at some state unis. If you still have the frames and the brood comb is in good shape you can sometimes see the desiccated remains of the goo. Call your state bee inspector, they may provide a service to look at used equipment. I think Maines will. Odd are greatly in your favor that there is nothing wrong and I have used plenty of used equipment but look at it carefully. Ask your mentor about it too.

They do sell kits to test for AFB. Never used them so I dont know if they if can pick up the spores on equipment though. Maybe see if there is a decent sized supplier in your area and go talk to them.

Yeah, Walmart will be the first place I look. I saw some there at a glance when I was there last time. I didn't have time to take a hard look at them, though. I don't want to have to replace curtain rods if I can help it but seems all curtains these days use those large round rods. That's just going to make things even more expensive if I have to replace those, too.
Consider PVC pipe that you can paint or conduit that can be painted. Haven't done it in a while so don't know if it is still cheaper or not. Wish I were close by...I love a good project.

The only thing for either American or European foulbrood is burn it.

To fumigate supers and frames, we used carbon tetrachloride...but that was for pests such as wax moths, not foulbrood.

Worked at food pantry today. Was -7 when out doing chores this morning beforehand.
No heat at pantry but two small space heaters, so was 40 in there all day. We only had about 15 people come thru. Too cold I think.
I have a small box I throw things in while I'm working there. Odds and ends. Its our pay for the day. Today I brought home "Golden Tumerick" Cereal...well?

Took a break and went over to the little free store, same town. Got some things for 4-H and so on. Its a buck to get in but well worth it!

SB: we have old farmhouse too. Here's what we did: Buy a few rolls of pink insulation. Cut to size each window. Fit it in snug. Cover window with plastic. Oct to May.
I even got cheap Christmas wrap to put up on window first, so thats what you see from the outside. But when its cold enough and your just trying to stay warm and keep the propane bill down a little, don't even care LOL.
Course this was bought when prices were normal a few years back.
All this year, I'm going to be collecting fire wood at my cabin so I can stay out there. I sure miss it. But way too cold right now.

ridgid foam board (not styrofoam) - you can wrap the panels in cloth or apply your paper decoration directly - put a handy handle on the backside and you can eazily take it down during warmer daytime hours for more natual light ....

Been off for a while. Researching ways to keep my birds fed off grid on 1/10th acre. I have come up with mangels, amaranth, millet, and mealworms. Of course I feed them scraps from the kitchen.

I am almost ready to start the mealworm farm. I found the wheat bran at my local feed store. I found the plastic drawers pretty easy, too. Now, I just have to get the mealworms.

Putting together a mushroom bin in my greenhouse, too. It was like the Fates put everything in place to get the mushrooms growing. There was one single carton at WM the other day. I have corrugated cardboard and coffee grounds, and a freed up tote to grow in.

I have been researching the Kratky method to grow greens for my husband, and maybe tomatoes in the greenhouse if summer isn't warm enough this year. I do not want another garden failure like last year with my tomatoes. 15 plants and 2 tomatoes from them.

Put back more canning jars. Found another place to sell my quail eggs.
Sold 7 dozen in the first week. Yay.

Thanks for all the suggestions you all! I think I'm still going with insulated curtains. I need them during the summer, too, to keep out the hot air. What freezes us in the winter causes us to use more air conditioning during the summer. I don't want to keep the windows closed up all the time, year around. I'll be looking online at Walmart to see what I can find and get the cost estimate. Because of the cost, I may have to buy the rods at one time, and all the panels at a different time. Once the living/dining/kitchen is done, I'll be finished. I already have insulated curtains in the pantry and our bedroom. The living/dining/kitchen is all open in together, so all the panels have to match and bought at the same time. I made the mistake one time of buying a few curtains at a time, and before I finished buying all of them, they discontinued them, so I was stuck, or I bought some of the curtains, and went back at a later date to finish buying, and the second batch came from a different stock and were slightly off in color.

I just have too many windows!!!!!

The roofers finally got here...and I'll say I'm glad I didn't do it myself this time. Found some boards that were bad. Still got the job done, from start to finish, in less than six hours. And that includes cleanup.
Good timing, too. The weather guessers are calling for heavy rain in a couple of days.

To borrow Judy's line - God is good, all of the time! :)

Now to go plant the potatoes...

First time to the grocery store in two weeks. Mainly replacing stuff we have used or will use soon-pasta, rice, pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, frozen veggies and the like. Found some london broil on markdown and bought two big ones that will turn into six dinners for us. Will cut and vac-seal tomorrow. Used sales and coupons but it was still an expensive trip. Glad I was just replacing some things and not doing a full shop.

What a mess. I've started going thru the pantry checking best by dates. We are trying to rotate stock, using what we can as fast as we can. Just found out the area food pantry takes nothing out of date. Wonder how long that'll last?

Good thing I started checking. Some supplies have been used up and not replaced. Just took for granted we had enough. Mistake. Big mistake. Glad it was caught now and not when shelves are totally bare. We may have to deal with unfamiliar brands but that's reality. Will not complain and be thankful for what we can get and the opportunity to fill the holes we can.

It's not really a prep item, but I ordered a TENS unit for my sciatica, today, after reading Freeholder's thread. I have a lot of flare ups with it, and hopefully this will help. Having sciatica is one of the main reasons I can no longer work a large garden. I can just barely twist or bend the wrong way, and I'm a mess. Sciatica is the result of my back surgery going bad.

I feel it's definitely a prep, so much so that we have two.

We each have tens units that the VA gave us and we never use them or never think about them. I use Lidocane patches when I have a flare up with my back instead of taking something for pain. I need to go get on my inversion table, although I'm not in pain right now. We do have batteries to replace the ones in the tens unit.

That just happened to me too. Thought I had a case of kidney beans and only had 2 cans left for my chili soup. Had plenty of pinto though. So ordered 2 cases. The hazard of being disorganized.

Thankfully, Snowmagedon was a non-event. I was expecting the 3 plus inches they had called for when I went out to walk the puppy at midnight, and it had just started to sleet. So I was hoping for no snow at all. We just got an inch, and with the high winds, it has almost all melted or blown away with no flooding... 13 degrees this morning, and I had to make several trips inside to warm up before I got everybody turned out. But the barn doors didn't freeze to the ground which was a huge help.
My only prep for the week was I bought myself an electric can opener. I've never had one in the 30 years we've been married, but my poor arthritic hands can't handle a manual one anymore.

Predictions of a big winter storm supposed to start Wednesday or Tuesday night. Go till Friday morning. Big snow.
Went and got bunch of stuff today. Will go again Tuesday, finish up.
I'm at son's for the night. He says he heard a cat and kittens under his trailer. He got some cat food.
I crawled under there couple times, don't see or hear anything. Put the cat crate with thick towel and some food and water under there.
Put the skirting back up the wind blew down. Also under the porch and along side the front.
Cat can still get out and move kittens if she wants.
But that will help with wind.
Thats the best I can do.

Holy smokes. The prices at the stores!
I just went to little town grocery and dollar general there. Wow. Everything has doubled or more!

I'll go to Walmart and dollar tree first if week, hope will be better. We didn't need much but still.

Looking forward to spring and garden.

That's the only place I can get shelf stable box milk. I get it for the boys. I might try to go tomorrow?
Got to get home so can get everyone help put more straw in pens for animals in prep for Tuesday storm.
Everyone freaking out as they are saying 8-20 inches. But that can change day to day.
