This is my first time on the prep threads. I am "Experienced" at prepping and hope to be able to contribute something.

I rigged up a 250 watt solar panel to charge the battery for my diesel generator this month. I did not use a charge control so I have to check it every hour or so with a volt meter so it does not over charge. At around 13-14 volts it is putting close to 17 amps into the battery so it charges fairly fast. I used it to charge the battery in my dump trailer a few days ago.

I hooked a 400 watt inverter to the battery and ran a large radio off of it while the solar panel was hooked up. I had to unhook the solar panel 1/2 hr out of every hour to keep the voltage in the battery from going to high. I have about a dozen of these panels and plan to use them to power a tiny house I am building on my property. I have an 80 amp Outback charge controller to use on the "Real" system along with a couple of 1000 watt true sine wave inverters.

It is my favorite spot as well. I sure enjoy reading and learning. Each week.

Went and topped the truck off then went to WM for another grocery run. Not embarrassed to admit that all the events going on have me a bit on edge. So to ease my mind a bit bought more food :popcorn3:The grocery section was thin in a number of areas, pasta was essentially wiped out. Was able to get nearly all of what I wanted. Brought it home, dated it and got it put away. Felt good. Please stay safe folks

This week we are prepping potato bed by adding compost. We should be planting in 2 weeks or so. Building some raised beds here in the test garden. Will start some tomato seeds this week. Trying to decide what to do about those knocking on the door asking for food or meds. I am sure some of you are in the same spot. Just wanting to do what is right and yet keeping enough for our own use. It is mostly family who knows that we garden big etc. Open to any of your thoughts or ideas.
I give nothing to anyone who comes knocking. I don't think you can start that and you can't risk being seen as charitable. I even have a No Solicitors sign for the front door. Buu-utttt, if I know them and wish to help I will drop a bag of goodies at their door anonymously. As for family, I plan to take care of mom and dad. I also start too many plants and give them away freely. Otherwise, I will share harvest with those who share in the labor. Tresspassors are delt with harshly and I let that be known, too.

Good morning, up awhile having coffee. Yes, my fav pace on TB too.
Welcome Thinwater. I love solar. I have it hooked up in my cabin which I hope to get back out to soon.

Very cold weather coming next two nights. Have to bolster the animal pens.
I have a running list for my big shop first of the month. Don't need too much, hopefully will be able to find it all.
Not much we can do outside right now but grandson shoveled the back porch, around the house and all the way down to the dog pens. Not bad for 8. He and I cooked dinner too.
Not much prep right now, just getting thru the worst part of the winter. Stay safe everyone!

the question isn't about their first knock on the door - it's about their third or fourth return visit - it's about their refusal to accept your eventual NO!!! >>> better get your mindset straight now - you can't feed the world

Well, our daughter made her third trip to the dr with this crud she and her family have. First trip they said no need to test- not covid. Second trip a few days later , they tested negative. Now she tested positive yesterday. She has been sick over 2 weeks. I kept our grandson 4 days last week because her boss insisted she come back to work. She called HR yesterday and they are giving her at least a week of medical leave. Hopefully she will get on the mend. She is pregnant so she can't take a lot of medication. But her lungs are clear. She just has copious amounts of snot, a cough, and low grade fever.

I am pretty sure I have caught Covid from the kids or grandson. I have run a low grade fever since Friday. I have a croupy cough at times too. Little sinus stuff but I do have a drainage. I am tired and have no appetite. But food taste normal. Hubby is ok so far. I am sleeping in our spare bedroom to minimize his exposure. If there was no covid, I would just think this was a cold. I have been much sicker in the past.

Except for the low grade fever, your symptoms mirror mine when I had the Rona recently... I ended up with bronchitis at the end, which was way worse than the Rona (for me, anyway)...

Grow a ton of summer squash, cukes and zucchini. Give them the biggest and plumpest. They will not return.

Its another cold sun shiny day. No real plans for the day, just normal stuff around the house. Looking out of my office window watching the dog and the goats playing.

My hair is still falling out, even though I'm taking biotin, it doesn't seem to be helping. At the rate I'm going I may end up with an extremely short hair cut, I've had it very short in the past.

I went into the pantry room last night to get a can of lima beans. I knew I was down to half a flat of the ones I was using out of. I thought I needed to go ahead and get out another flat, so went looking for one. I almost panicked! I do not have any more lima beans! I've been so concentrated on buying a larger variety of canned veggies that I've overlooked the basics. :hof:

Guess what's on my next shopping list?!

Biotin isn't an instant fix. And once it has started falling out, it is actually well into the cycle, and it will take time for it to grow noticeably.

Now for some good news! My little grandsons both won first place tonight in Awana Grand Prix, for design, out of 39 cars!
Their dad really had them working on their cars. Noah won in the older kids, and got a trophy!
Levi won in his younger group and got a 5lb candy bar LOL.
They are so thrilled! They didn't have anything like this in the city. So they have won big at the fair and now Awana.
I was holding my breath hahaha

ps: its 1 degree outside right now UG.

Planting potatoes today. Last of nuke preps came in yesterday. We continue to do all everyday chores that might need electricity earlier rather than later. Sherree hope you find limas soon!

I went looking more in depth, yesterday, and found another flat of limas! That is nowhere near enough, though. Yeah, they're on my next shopping list. Peas/beans are a staple in my pantry. I've got southern purple hull peas, butter beans, pinto beans, sweet peas, field peas, black-eye peas, green beans, canned baked beans, and lima beans. I've got plenty of all the others.

We live in an old house that we remodeled when we bought it 40 yrs. ago. It was built in the 1930's with no insulation, except in the attic. It's also built up on concrete blocks, and no insulation under the floors. It's small, but not very energy efficient. We've added some insulation, and put new windows in all through the house, but with so many windows facing North, I can still feel air coming in around the window facings at times. I'm using mini blinds and curtains over all the windows, but.......

I'm getting ready to go curtain shopping. I'm going to get insulated curtains for all the windows. I think those will help more than the thin ones I have hanging over the mini blinds, now. We're trying to make our house more energy efficient without spending a huge amount of money, again ( remodeling ). If we ever get to the point of not being able to use wood heat, we're in trouble. Might as well start now trying to do what we can to keep warmer if that happens. I need 14 panels just to do the living/dining/kitchen area, because of the double windows. All but one set of double windows are facing North.

I'm a little late to the party. I envy all of you with your gardening. We are no longer able to do the work. I do keep some citrus in containers and a few other greens and such but that is about it.
My prepping of late is mostly about cat food. I shop everyday and add cases where I find them. I would be really worried if I hadn't already had a many months supply put by.
The other additions I've made is to my medical supplies. Old Indian cough syrup and another homeopathic one from Vitacost plus more supplements of various kinds.
I also added a case of Mrs Meyers dish soap and a case of clam chowder from Boudin bakery.

You all are talking about neighbors and relatives knocking on the door. Funny that. The older I get the less I care about whether anyone steals my stuff. We been getting the benefit of prepping for awhile now so feel vindicated anyway. No family and just a neighbor I help out and one set of friends. They will both be taken care of as long as I can if the SHsTF. I personally have already survived so feel like the rest is anti climax. Not going to much longer.

This is just a thought. Ever thought of cutting that foam board that has a shiny aluminum foil on both sides and covering it with cloth and sliding behind curtains. I too live in an old house. We put insulation in attic and under floors and replaced windows. That was my next go to if I wasn't pleased with new windows. My main issue is that i love the windows to be uncovered!

We added more insulation to the attic, and when we put down ceramic tile throughout the house, we added insulation underneath the concrete board. We have storm windows with double panes, but the air seems to be coming in around the windows. Only a thin layer of insulation on the exterior walls. We put that up, ourselves, when we covered the outside of the house with western cedar. Like you, I don't want to cover the windows, but have thought of using window blankets/quilts if I have to. Buying new curtains is going to cost a lot, because I have so many windows. I'm going to have to use emergency money to do it. Something has to be done, though, before it becomes a greater issue. Cary isn't getting any younger, and there will come a time when he can no longer cut firewood. No one around here sells it that we know of. We do have a small wall unit propane heater, but that by itself is nowhere near enough.

Trying to get the hatches battened down for Snowmageddon #3, which is supposed to come tomorrow. We are just now starting to dry out, and I am so sick of winter! I have been trying to put 100 pounds of sand or so in front of the barn every day. I have to go down and shovel it off the sand bar and bring it up in the truck. That's all I can manage in addition to all the other farm chores, but it is making a little bit of difference in us being able to walk.
I had planned to be at the dump at 7:30 this morning, but it was 16 degrees and I just couldn't make myself...
I had to get some parts for my Jeep and hopefully dh can stay upright long enough to fix it. I don't drive the truck in bad weather. Made a fuel run and stopped at the library to try and get something to read, but they said they were closed due to having no staff.

Sherree When I was a younger woman...a thousand years ago!...I lived on a bluff above the Mississippi River in an old Revolutionalry town. Most of the houses were made of stone. They actually made window coverings of quilts. I had opportunity to observe those coverings up close. They used velcro on the edges! Along with the quilts that had been reinforced with extra battings it really cut down the drafts. The windows in those houses could not be replaced because they were historic.

I've never seen window quilts in person. All I've seen are pictures of them, but thought they were nice.

We have a lot of windows in our home, and even though they are newer, I still feel cold air sometimes. I bought thermal curtains from Walmart that are actually good quality. I've also used plastic over windows we don't look out much. We are seriously thinking of adding more insulation this spring.

Ask whomever gave them to you. If you go through the brood comb you may be able to see some of the signs of it in the cells. I lost one hive to foolbrood years ago because of this. Now I will only take used equipment if I know exactly what happened.
Is there anything that I can treat all the equipment with to sterilize it?

Yeah, Walmart will be the first place I look. I saw some there at a glance when I was there last time. I didn't have time to take a hard look at them, though. I don't want to have to replace curtain rods if I can help it but seems all curtains these days use those large round rods. That's just going to make things even more expensive if I have to replace those, too.

Yes, check with Dadent Bee supply company. It's something that smells like mothballs. It's been a few years since I did this and I can't remember the details.

Speaking of cold, when I go over to the cabin DH usually has a fire going in the wood stove over there. He's out cutting down wood and no fire, it was cold. But then again I had on flip flops and a tank top, with flannel pj bottoms. I'm comfortable in the house this way, but sometimes I have to put on a sweat shirt and compression stockings on my feet.

I found a bag with some sprouted potatoes in it, so DH is going to plant them.

I'm struggling with sadness today so I'm trying to stay busy. I'll get past this because

I ordered mine online from Walmart as there was better selection. Our home is very rustic, so I used branches the size of curtain rods and clips for the curtains. I also used brackets to hold the branches. I get a lot of compliments from them.
