My initial thoughts still remain, but I was trying to be funny and sarcastic at the same time. We should be trying to keep the mentality ill from hurting themselves, or others. Psychiatry has failed. Utterly and completely. Unfortunately, I don’t see this improving any time soon. Sad for all of us.

Hope he gets convicted under a special or general court-martial for his actions and receives at a minimum a Bad Conduct discharge. This will not only prevent him for receiving any VA care for his injuries, but would also remain ineligible should he receive discharge clemency of a 1 or 2 level upgrade.

When someone does something like this, I often wonder. WHAT is going through their minds? Then I remember. If they had two brain cells left to rub together, they wouldn't have done it in the first place. The only one hurt is the one who strikes the match.

I wish that were true, but there are dozens in most cases who also pay the price- from innocent children family and friends who are left with the guilt, and grief, to the first responders who have to run toward the human refuse day after day and sit with darkness that brings from time to time, to the random unwilling witness who's got sights, sounds and smells indelibly etched into their memories.

What is it with people who use suicide to attract attention to themselves. Suicide is sick enough without "performing" for an audience. Mentally ill for sure to choose to die in such a way.

Suicide creates ripples that affect others. Lives get destroyed by selfish sins. Whole communities can be damaged by one selfish sinful act. No good will come from this protest so he has wasted his life for nothing.

You're probably correct in this instance.

Making oneself into a crispy critter has been used as a form of passive resistance for a long time for many reasons.

Imho, you can't generalize too much. Interesting that he was a military member.

Although I don't agree with the assessment, some people feel his oath and subsequent military service alone made your statement true.

Had he survived his court-martial would have fallen under the violation of the UCMJ that covers DESTRUCTION OF GOVERNMENT PROPERTY. A SELF-INFLICTED injury, negligence like a sunburn, OR setting yourself on fire....anything that keeps you from performing your duties that is your fault or responsibility.....like it or not, if you are in the military...........you are government property!
