Some T-storm, watch boxes are popping up around DFW/
I'm done - bring it on. The drinking light is officially lit.
Good luck, kids.
I would not do well in your situation. All the calves would be in the house with me.We're not supposed to get moisture but -30 windchill. Calves are in the milk barn. Which is really small but all I can do. Everyone else has lean to's. Quigley and Duchess of course are happier than a tick on a deer's butt. Must be nice to have polar vortex fur. I hung a shower curtain over the porch door to help with the dog door draft. We learned last year after the -50 windchill that thing leaks a lot of air.
They need light to drink by??Minneesoodah.
I thought the drinking light came on at first snow...something like late August.
It goes out when the last snow melts...late July.
The Jersey calves are a little more sensitive to the cold. The Hereford calves could ride out a blizzard. Unfortunately the Jersey calves had to be locked in the milkbarn. Mostly because they keep running out bucking and kicking.I would not do well in your situation. All the calves would be in the house with me.
Heck, it's just raining here, and my free range rooster is in the utility room, sitting warm and dry on the lawn mower handle.
@Cardinal how do you guys take to people from mn? i'm from the northern part, and they already think i'm odd in this part of the state (i now live a little further south in mn).
i don't want to be hearing "well, bless your heart" a lot.....
I am wondering this too. We have often considered moving south once our mothers are gone but wondered whether we would be welcomed since we are from Mass.
If you are conservative, you will fit in. I am originally from New England. Lots of folks in my general area are from other places. And then some are part of clans who have lived here for generations. If you treat them with respect, they will return it.
They respect other hard working middle class folks who aren't out to give them ****.
As far as western Carolina/Virginia/Tennessee mountain areas go - common sense, honest, plain spoken, reliable conservative views - fitting in can be done, if you know how to be human. Folks watch what you say, who you hang around with, dress and lifestyle choices, hobbies, talents, in order to get an idea of what you really are, and whether they wish to interact further with you.I was going to reply to you two, but Cardinal did a great job below. I'm in NC. Actually the weather here is very mild and finding a small town isn't hard to do. I would recommend being at least 100 miles from Wilmington on the coast, it is a hurricane magnet.
Well we are Scottish so hopefully that helps, lol. Been toying with NC actually. As far as western Carolina/Virginia/Tennessee mountain areas go - common sense, honest, plain spoken, reliable conservative views - fitting in can be done, if you know how to be human. Can be a prickly bunch, at times - that is the Scottish attitude/perspective coming out - its just in the genes. You'll get used to it.

Well...there's winter drinking, and then there's fishing season drinking. Two completely different activities. Bipolar actually.Minneesoodah.

Ewwww. With a destructive force comparable to a "soon to be" ex-wife.They are guestimating ice up to 1/2".
Not good!Sleet just started here.
Joy.
At least it's not rain...at 21F.
They are guestimating ice up to 1/2".
More joy.
Hope you don’t get that 1/2 of ice!
Aw, good for you! I’m sure they’ll be glad for any help they can getThat's the top end of the projection, but we have 48hrs of this crap.
Had to run last night on a generator for a telephone switch...way out in bigfoot country.
Once this band blows through, going out on a "little old lady deal". replacing a heat sequencer in her central unit. They have an LP gas log for backup. It was burning really fat, had to work the burner over with a vacuum...probably cobwebs in it.
Her son runs the local beer joint...gotta take care of peeps.
That’s what we had yesterday! Alll day too.Nothin but pouring non-stop rain here, but at least the temps are in the 60s, none of that biting cold we had a few days ago.
Poor chickens don't want to come out of their coops.
And, don't forget Sat's expressed LOVE of olives . . . <ahem>My dislike of cold...well, expect the bitching and whining to eclipse Dennis's lawn mowing threads.
Good grief 18”?Finally winding down and I was out and blowing snow at 6am and got the drive done and part of the yard by 8:30. Still waiting for the county plow to go by and then I can go out again and clean up. Was a decent snowfall and got 18 inches. Not a record breaker but glad it wasn’t like that all winter. Get too many of those type storms early in the season and you run out of room to throw it.
Mine too. Fought bitter cold and dusting of snow through birth of twin calves last night. Unfortunate result of bull break in last spring.Another day of baselayer.
Plug the windows.
Light woodstove in shop.
My dislike of cold...well, expect the bitching and whining to eclipse Dennis's lawn mowing threads.

Mesoscale Discussion 0177 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0949 AM CST Wed Feb 23 2022 Areas affected...portions of extreme southeast Oklahoma...central and northern Arkansas...extreme southern Missouri Concerning...Freezing rain Valid 231549Z - 232045Z SUMMARY...A mix of freezing rain and sleet is ongoing across portions of Arkansas and is expected to continue into the afternoon, with up to 0.10 inch/hr freezing rain rates possible with the heavier precipitation bands. DISCUSSION...While a sub-freezing surface airmass continues to overspread much of the southern Plains into the Ozark Valley today, an approaching mid-level trough across the Southwest is supporting robust 850-700 mb warm-air/moisture advection across the Arklatex. This warmer, moister air atop the arctic surface airmass is promoting sufficient melting of frozen precipitation in the 925-700 mb layer (per the 12Z LZK observed sounding and 14Z RAP forecast soundings valid for 16-21Z). KLZK and KSRX dual-polarimetric radar data and surface observations suggest that a mix of freezing rain and snow are already underway across western into central AR, which should continue into the afternoon hours based on 12Z HREF output and the last few runs of the HRRR. A relatively greater concentration of sleet is expected across northwest Arkansas, where 15Z mesoanalysis shows 925 mb cold air advection in place, which should usher in cold enough temperatures just above the surface to support more efficient refreezing of liquid precipitation. Areas across central AR to the MO border are better aligned with the 850-700 mb WAA axis, where relatively higher freezing rain rates are expected, with up to 0.10 inch/hr rates possible with the heavier precipitation bands, though some sleet is still possible. |
