Today I sowed 18 each of Aker's West Virginia, Pleasure Paradise, Purple Dog creek and Teacher. I only need 3 of each for myself, the rest is for family and friends. The Pleasure Paradise is French, The Teacher is German, the Purple Dog Creek is from here in Kentucky.

I've got plants in the ground. big boy, better boy, a grape and a cherry at least 18 plants in all. Waiting on creole to sprout. also got cucumber, okra, green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, eggplant and sunflower in the ground. All were plants except for the sunflowers, broad sowed them. We've had steady rain for hours and hours, I checked on the plants this afternoon and they look great.

I've never heard of these varieties before, can you tell us more about them, are they for canning, table eating, etc.?

I love those pink Brandywines. I'll set out maters about the 1st of May to Mother's Day. Last year for the first time, I planted a little yellow cherry tomato called Sun Gold. Got the plants from local greenhouse. Oh man what a sweet treat they were.

Aker’s West Virginia

A family heirloom tomato of Carl Aker of Pennsylvania. Originally from West Virginia. These organic tomato seeds produce a vigorous highly productive, regular leaf, heirloom tomato plant that yields an excellent set of large, 10 to 16-ounce, deep-red, slightly flattened tomatoes in clusters of 2. Fruits show little or no cracking and have a well balanced sweetness to acidity. Delicious, robust flavors.

Purple Dog Creek (copied) is a very rare family heirloom from the small community of Dog Creek near Munfordville Kentucky. I say it's very rare because very few have seeds for it outside of Dog Creek. The tomatoes were served as part of a "thank you" outside dinner served to a WV preacher and members of his congregation. They went to Dog Creek to do home improvements for the low income elderly of the area. The preacher liked the tomatoes so much he asked if anyone had seeds for them. One of the guys at the supper had grown and brought them. He went home and brought the preacher back some seeds. One of my friends in Martinsburg WV is a member of the preachers church. They got to talking about the trip to Dog Creek and the preacher offered some seeds to my friend. He grew them and loved them. He sent me some last year and I grew them this year. They are dark pink less than 1 pound although I've heard they grow to 18 oz. They are very good. Strong plant and fairly productive

Lehrertomate Organic Tomato Seeds - "Teacher Tomato"
This rare German variety yields huge, beefsteak-type slicers that are absolutely delicious. The fruit are meaty, with few seeds, and are slightly ribbed. We grew only 12 plants this year and harvested nearly 170 pounds. Numerous fruit weighed over 1.5 pounds, with the largest reaching 2.3 pounds. We will continue to grow this wonderful variety in the coming years, but our seed supply is limited this year.

66 Days, Open-Pollinated, Indeterminate

Around Feb in N. Alabama, my granddaddy used to take a large washtub filled with dirt and sow the tomato plants in there and each night cover them with plastic. Trick was you HAD to be up before the sun hit them and remove the plastic (or the plants fried). Always on east side of house and have noooo idea how container drained. Could have been rusted out for all I know. Worked and worked well. Until that year he decided to experiment with yellow tomatoes and no one would touch them. Of course that had nothing to do with the growing method.

not sure how he kept different varieties separated. Or even if he did. We just chunked them in the garden and cussed ‘em when the weather got super hot. But canned tomatoes we had. And to my recollection there was no cussing when we scarfed them down.

Does anyone have a favourite paste tomato? I usually just plant Amish Paste and San Moranzo, but would like to try some others this year.

Debarao, Fresh Salsa (from Burpee) or Royal Chico... the only variety I've ever seen survive and then outgrow late blight when the weather improved.

Amen to that! How far are you from Columbus Murt? We should get together.

I planted 4 Rutgers, 4 Celebrity, 4 Early Girls and a bunch of peppers. I still have 6 Big Boys to get in the ground today. My green beans are coming up. I still need to get some cukes and squash planted today if I can beat the rain.
