This ain’t the terrorist’s first screwed-up rodeo. On Glock Talk, “apparently four Islamic Wahhabi extremists“ were in the assault. As roof of the hired hall collapsed in the fire, we may not know until tomorrow, or later, what the body count is.

Regardless of what’s in the news now, Putin has received a major setback. He will blame whomever he can, to break back to the war on Ukraine, not Islamic terrorists, or even dissident groups spinning up in Russia.

I was thinking about the Chechens but correct me if I'm wrong. Weren't they mainly muslim?

Kirby was in the middle of one of his press briefings and spoke with limited information.

He seemed very rushed and probably should have kept his mouth shut until he could put a coherent thought together.

Anybody who knows anything about the Russians, needs to measure their words -very- carefully in a situation like this.

I think they are least have a very sizable Muslim percentage in Chechnya. In past years, when Russia has had jihadist problems, it has often come from that area. There was one pretty big attack in the last decade, but I forget exactly where and when.

Why Kirby is still in that role is beyond me. He was awful during the Afghanistan debacle, and he's no better now.

But his brand of competence is what this administration wants and rewards.

Not as far as one would think. Ukraine has been hitting the area with drones. And a couple of weeks ago 150 soldiers crossed into Russia to plant a flag, for a PR stunt, all but 9 were killed.

2ndly, the Ukraine plates not as far fetched as one might think either. The Donbass region is in Ukraine, even though support Russia is still located in Ukraine, and the people probably use Ukraine plates.

Still early don't rule anything out.

If they really did get one alive and he's conscious, they're already backtracking the trail. They don't mess around.

We have no way of knowing, of course, but I doubt this was a Chechnyan-spawned operation, even though some of the shooters could be from there. It stinks of Budanov. But the Russkies will figure it out.

Seems like it'd be a trek. Distances are pretty significant in that area of the world. And having to dodge fighting would make it take even longer. Would be hard to go around by going through parts of Belarus, since they are a Russian ally.

Just Kyiv to Moscow is almost 900 km. 10-11 hour drive.
