Yes, a smart thing to do, and that made it easy to see for miles and miles around for any potential trouble coming your way.
It was and stairs were all on the right hand side, with no bannisters. Defending the castle meant you coming down the stairs and could swing your sword, and the attacker coming up couldn't due to the wall being in the way.

'Course everything was set up for right handed people.
