Pricing for groceries is all over the place. I bought 3 avocados at our local Food Lion (Western North Carolina) a few days ago for $1.19 each, their regular price (they were on sale last week for under a $1 each). Ran into our Ingles today for a couple of items and wanted to get an avocado that was more ripe than the ones we had at home ~ $3.00 for a single, non organic avocado. I passed, but that is a huge discrepancy!

I just paid $2.88 for a large size Hass avocado from my local Walmart.

Smith's in NE NV at lunchtime today. Milk has gone up another 20 cents per gallon, now $3.69. No clearance-priced meat or dairy items, and as John Deere Girl said above, 2 lb blocks of cheese are now $7.49. A lot of prices seem to be creeping up. However, the 25 lb bag of Big J flour (a Utah mill) that was $9.99 last week was $13.49 today, a 35% increase. I decided to get a bag of store-brand flour which was still $7.19.

I realize this are non-food items but I had to research my past Amazon purchases for a warranty claim.

As I was reviewing the past purchases I was amazed how things have gone up in less than a year. (2021 purchases)

An item that I bought for $61 was now $78. Another $199 item was now $229.

Everything costs more. If you need anything, buy it now.

There’s @ shortage of avocados right now, partly due to tariffs on Mexico and partly due to weather and @ fungus that’s killing trees, just like citrus. Got avocado oil?

I know it's a holiday weekend, but Aldi had no cheddar brats, hot dog buns, or cornflakes. WM had none of the frozen Tyson chicken strips I like. I couldn't find any frozen chicken at all. They didn't have any of the Little Debbie cakes that dh eats. I got annoyed and forgot to get hot dogs there, so I don't know if they had them or not.
They did have canned cat food (the important thing!)
Mid South.

A friend of mine does logistics for Little Debbie. She said they're having difficulty getting some essential things they need.

I've nearly completed my pantry inventory. Once I'm done, I'll know what I need to purchase and what I'll never need to buy again. More important, I'll be able to plan menus based on the pantry and determine just how far it stretches.

This should have been done years ago and kept up each time I used/replaced an item. Since I didn't today is where I start. Hopefully, going forward I'll not be wasting time and money on things I don't need more of and filling the holes that I've found.

I was at Fareway in a smaller town yesterday and the store was well stocked and crazy busy. Plenty of friendly help. Prices are the same as at all the Fareway stores which is a big plus for a small community. Our local store is not so lucky on prices although seems to remain well stocked.

Wow. Didn't know that. So glad I'm trying to grow my own right now! I recently learned that you have to have two separate types to cross pollinate in order to grown them successfully. I just purchased two FL avocados from Publix last week for $5 a piece!

IIRC there are over 80 different varieties of avocados, it's only the Haas and the other one that you find in grocery stores that's having issues. I watched a video of someone who went to the florida keyes on holiday, she tried tree different types of avocados at a tasting, these are not the one's we find in the grocery stores, and she reported that they were way superior in flavor and texture compared to the store varieties.

Just got back from Aldi; went there around 7 p.m. - not crowded at all and store was well-stocked. Regular sugar was a little low, but there were overflowing piles of confectioners sugar. I did have to dig through the Sucralose bags to find a bag of Stevia; I think I got the last one.

One thing I've noticed on something else. I like TruLemon drink powder that comes in boxes of little tubes and is sweeted with Stevia. Usually one tube is enough for two bottles of water, as otherwise the taste is overwhelming. With the ones I've bought recently I have to use the entire tube to get the same flavor I used to get with half. Shrinkflation? The price has also gone up - from $1.99 to $2.24 in Walmart. I guess I'll have to stock up if/when Publix has it on BOGO again.

When I went to wm on Monday, a whole freezer case out in the middle was empty. Each end did have some ham, but didn't see any sausage. I stocked up on ham for the freezer, have to repackage in serving sizes vacuum sealed. I made a paper list and wrote down the prices of each.

In Walmart most of the middle freezer cases were empty. One section had a single bag of frozen chicken. Another section was entirely filled with cases of all kinds of beer (I assume they turned the temp down!), and another one was filled with hundreds of containers of potato and macaroni salad and cole slaw.

I read that sugar might be the next big shortage. I know this is canning season, so people might want to stock up on it.
I ordered two 4 pound bags of Domino sugar from Amazon, to can two batches of homegrown strawberries.

They sent me one 10 pound bag of Domino sugar instead. Same price..

Got my canning done and had some sugar left over!

S. TX....Once in a great while we like to splurge and have salmon for dinner. For several years the fresh wild, previously frozen has priced in the range of $10-14/lb. Yesterday when I went to HEB (our major grocery store, like Vons) it was priced $44 per pound!!! I was so shocked at the price I called the butcher over to confirm they hadn't made a mistake. Nope. Needless to say, I walked on by.

I have GOT to do this as well! Your post was another nudge for me.

Yep.
Same here. Exactly. I have not bought Salmon only except for twice in last month.
It used to be our “go to” when certain steaks got so damn high for our Sunday night dinner, now, it’s the salmon too.

I tried the whole chicken from Wild Fork and was very happy with it.

Arrived two days after ordering it and it was still frozen rock hard.

Compared the price to Walmart online which had Tysons whole chicken at $1.32 a pound versus $1.48 for Wild Fork.

Difference was Wild Fork was frozen from processing to delivery to my door, never thawed out. The package is lined with foam and dry ice is included.

Also it was vacuum shrink wrapped in heavy plastic ready to go in my freezer.

Roasted the chicken and it was very juicy and delicious. I just bought two more for the freezer.

ETA: I have no financial connection to Wild Fork other than as a customer.
I like Wild Fork. Great quality and prices are reasonable.

Huh. Again, something I didn't know. I may look into other varieties then. My Haas plants are currently doing fabulous, but they're also in a greenhouse.

Our wild Hawaiian avocados easily weigh a pound or more and have a smooth skin. We cannot export them because of some ag ruling. So if you want to farm and sell avocados here you have to grow Haas variety.

Sounds like someone’s pockets are being lined, sounds like it’s right up there with the black angus beef bullshit that many midwesterners fought hard to get rid of. Sorry there’s more beef, and better quality and tasting beef than black angus. Black angus does well In intense farming/feed lot methods compared to other breeds. Think red delicious apple varieties here. Looks pretty, tastes horrible.

The latest shortage I've ran into is Chinet platters in the 100 size package. Sam's Club says out of stock. The only ones around are with the price gougers now as much as 74 bucks for what was 24. I did find some on Walmart.com for 5 something for fewer but a limit of 2 packages. Bought some compostable ones on Amazon because I wanted them this weekend and I will order the WM ones but boy things are screwed up. It's impossible to buy enough stuff that you don't run out.

I went to Kroger early this evening.

Stock was “ok” but it’s still the prices!
Even chicken was pretty bad!
What I was going to say is our Kroger broccoli didn’t look quite that bad because I did buy some. But it was on the “skinny side”, possibly a couple of days away from being not good enough to sell(?)
I bought two bunches of it to steam for our dinner today.

Picked up some water at Walmart tonight was $2 something for years, a couple of weeks ago it was 3 something but I understood that increase with diesel going up. Picked up my normal 40 bottle pack and it’s now $4.65. Told by lead in grocery it will be going up even more do to cost and availability of plastic and freight charges. Local city water smells and tastes like bleach 2-3 times a week.

From my Irish Housemate who told me this morning that the "cheap" cans of cat food have gone from 5 Euros for a pack of six to 6.50.

She looked at the butcher and using some cuts of meat it would now be cheaper simply to buy meat intended for humans, though of course,, that has gone way up too.

I'm going on Wednesday for a rare shopping trip to buy some meat for the freezer that I'm not getting from our organic/farm supplies (mostly chicken for broth and such). I know exactly what the costs were until about a year ago, and I will report how much they have gone up after this trip.

My housemate does not eat meat, so she's only paying attention to it when it comes to the critters who need it.

Edited to add: the price of rescue battery hens has gone from 5 Euros a hen to 7 in less than two months. The money only covers the costs of gasoline and their feed until they are rehomed. We got two a couple of months ago, than are older two died, so I'm getting three more in a couple of weeks, which is why I know the prices.

I did a search but couldn't find the non-food thread so I am reporting here.

My housemate just got back from visiting friends for a cookout and did some shopping in a larger town further away from where we live.

She got the LAST four shelving units in B and Q (a major hardware chain)

She got the LAST outdoor table at Lidles (they went on sale three days ago)

There were no inexpensive plastic storage boxes, she had to get me a heavy-duty one (like for tools) to store my sweaters in for the Summer.

As for groceries, one of the husbands at the cookout, the guy that works in IT and is quite the "geek" was going on and on about the "coming wheat shortage!"

Now, this really impressed my housemate because this guy is the sort you expect to barely know where the milk is in the supermarket. You would expect him to notice a shortage in computer parts or auto parts but not wheat and flour.

She said, "word is getting around, really getting around."

My gallons of Crystal Geyser have gone from 99 to 1.49 and 1.59. Also we used to have good water here in the desert and now they are treating it with something that makes it cloudy out if the faucet.

I've been stocking up on flour, picking up a bag or two each time I go to Aldi. where it's something like $2.11. I saw 10# bags of Gold Medal flour on Amazon for $4.63, so since I had more than that in rewards from my Amazon credit card I ordered a bag, so I got it free. I just checked to see if the batteries for my big, heavy police grade flashlight are comiing today, and saw that the flour will be arriving by June 22!

I've been stocking up on cornmeal and flour for over a year. It keeps really well in the freezer, or can be canned in 1/2gal canning jars with O2 absorbers.

I have been to WM, Aldi's and 2 Kroger in the past few days. Everything is well stocked. There were so many people in Kroger stocking you could barely get through. Aldi had pallets of stuff sitting on the floor waiting to be stocked as well. Really looked pre-CV, except for prices which I estimate are ~15-20% higher on average. Of course, some specific items are higher.
