More like a wider trope. "The Legend of Bagger Vance," for example, featured a "magical negro" that helped a white person in his time of struggle.

Okay, so I watched the movie this evening along with dh. I had read bad reviews regarding it and saw that it made less than $1 million ..not enough to cover it's costs even. That said, I found the acting well done and the writing while over the top in some ways, quite good. As a white person watching it I found it a bit condescending in some areas but from a sociological point of view I can see why black people would feel as it is portrayed in the movie. In the end..the black character finally breaks out and forces the ' white privilege ' guy to listen to him and actually hear him and gets through to him and it was well done. I found it an interesting movie that gave me some insight to a culture I wouldn't have an inside track on otherwise. Didn't agree with everything but then I don't need to and people are allowed to feel what they feel. I found it less about racism against whites and more an explanation of some black insecurities and how some feel around white people. Just my take on it.
