Europe ‘epicentre’ of monkeypox outbreak: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday Europe remained the epicentre of the global monkeypox outbreak, which posed a “real risk” with more than 1,500 cases reported in the region.
The UN health body already announced on Tuesday that it would hold an emergency meeting next week to determine whether to classify the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern.

“Europe remains the epicentre of this escalating outbreak with 25 countries reporting more than 1,500 cases, or 85 percent of the global total,” Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, told a press conference Wednesday.
WHO’s European region comprises 53 countries, including several in Central Asia.
“The magnitude of this outbreak poses a real risk. The longer the virus circulates, the more it will extend its reach, and the stronger the disease’s foothold will get in non-endemic countries,” Kluge said.
Until the past few months, monkeypox had generally been confined to Western and Central Africa.
Kluge said that the majority of cases reported in Europe “have been among men who have sex with men”, but also warned against stigmatisation.

He stressed “that the monkeypox virus is not in itself attached to any specific group.”
The regional director also warned that the risk was increasing as summer had arrived with “tourism, various Pride events, music festivals and other mass gatherings planned across the region.”
“These events are powerful opportunities to engage with young, sexually active and highly mobile people,” Kluge said, but stressed that “monkeypox is not a reason to cancel events, but an opportunity to leverage them to drive our engagement.”
Speaking next to Kluge, Steve Taylor, director of European Pride Organisers Association, said that some 750 Pride events were planned across the European region and welcomed the WHO’s recommendation not to cancel these events.

“Sadly, but entirely predictably, some of those who oppose Pride and who oppose equality and human rights have already been attempting to use monkeypox as a justification for calls for Pride to be banned,” Taylor told reporters.
The EU announced Tuesday that it had purchased almost 110,000 vaccine doses to help tackle the outbreak, though the WHO does not recommend mass vaccination against monkeypox.

Do you have a link to the meter? Thanks!!

There are several that are posted in the thread. Now that the tracker by BNO is no longer being updated, these are the two I've been looking at, until I find a better one:

Also, here is some data in a google spreadsheet that someone is tracking:

I also wanted to add, why change the name of a disease if it’s no big deal and isn’t a threat to the general population??? What’s the point of that? I think they are going to declare it a global emergency and then escalate from there.

June 7. Eight days ago. The other two possible cases are her husband and her three-year old.

Not a gay disease. She had gone to see her sister. She went to the hospital with high fever and bad headache. I probably got some details from other sources. Too busy to keep them straight.

The Laredo Morning Times reports this is one of three potential cases in Nuevo Laredo. The other two are family members of the suspected infected patient, a 21-year-old stay-at-home mom who sought medical attention on June 7 at the Mexican Institute of Social Security. All three are being monitored for symptoms.

I should not be reading this thread.
I'm trying to take a break! It's not working.
Sometimes you need to know what is happening more than you need a break. I'm feeling much the same as you are, but I'm watching this closely as it seems that this isn't the traditional monkeypox, and I want to pay attention to what world leaders are saying about this. Interesting times...

Cover your eyes. If it mainly spread with droplets, one of those clear face shields should go a long way toward safety inside buildings.

You should never touch the shield with your bare hands. Disinfect with hot water and soap both before and after use. N-95 mask worn with it will make you look totally on top of things. Sanitize your mouth, throat, and gut with at least 12% ETOH before bedtime.

I told you fomites would be a thing.

I’d bet on a lot sooner.

I'm not up to thinking about that right now, but you and BW are probably correct.

I'm going kayaking -- this kayak is 38 pounds. I can't lift an 80 pound canoe anymore. I'm going, as soon as it cools off. A friend has some land on a lake, and I'll camp there, ride my bike, and paddle. It's not far away, and his land is fenced. I think I'll be safe there.

They will find it so by June 23.

But something has to happen to seal the deal.

The Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization is set to meet on Thursday 23rd June 2022, to assess whether the alleged monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.

2090 cases.
The case count was 2038 around 1-2pm today.

Around 9am today the case count was 1959.
You can see that narrative changing from just the fags to everybody is at risk!!! This is spreading much faster than the Vid. Remember that the exercise had the deaths starting this month

WHO meets next week to decide if this one is serious. De ja vu folks. What you think or feel is irrelevant.. this one will be Draconian in numerous regards.
