He would IF he could figure out how to make a dollar out of it.They might have full employment but the pay is not very good, and almost no benefits.
Not arguing with you, and I also understand what you mean in a general sense.
However, in a specific sense, that's pretty much a Northern Abolitionist POV. And today is a Progressive Liberal POV.
First of all understand that there were good and bad on both sides. And even with what I am about to share, blacks still didn't really want to be slaves.
They did "earn" money. With good crop production the "owner" would "give" money to his slaves. And the owner would also allow his slaves to earn money on the side, by doing work for others. In this manner they could purchase items for themselves, and in most cases also purchase their spouse for themselves (in effect making them free).
In some cases the slave actually worked for someone else for money and a portion of which went to the owner, and the rest was kept by the "pimped" slave. The best Captain on the Potomac River, notice I said "Captain" was a slave, for a land lover, who was about to purchase his wife from another owner, but that owner was about to sell her to someone else, so he "stole" her and they ran away.
Concerning benefits: Southern Slaves were some of the most healthy people in the world, well taken care of by their owners. Living conditions was well above those for factory workers in the north. Housing sq. ft. was larger, mortality rate was less, calorie intake was more than northern factory workers. All well documented. And even compared to most of the rest of the world.
And the old slave wasn't killed or sold off, they were allowed to "stay on the plantation". Housed and fed, with medical attention. In appreciation for long years of service. All of which is well documented.
Believe it or not slaves were considered by most white owners as extended family.
With all this "well documented" why isn't this the story?
It doesn't fit the "white supremacy" theory narrative of the Progressive Liberal screamers, and has been perpetuated since about 1965. Notice the difference in "Gone with the Wind" produced in 1939 was hailed as one of the best movie's ever, then, and now if you like it (Trump) you're a racist.
So if there were so many good things about being a slave why was it bad? You were denied freedom.
Did we fight a war for that purpose? Absolutely not. Another Progressive Liberal narrative.
