Shall we make sure Houthi's get no US aid directly or indirectly, BEFORE OR AFTER we blow them to hell?

I quite agree with previous sentiments. PULL THE DAMN TRIGGER. The Barbary Pirates come to mind. The solution is military force. They understand that. Our military industrial complex really wants to drop bombs and have a war. This seems to be a good rationale. They are shooting at our Navy after all. Erase the Houthis. Erase a good deal of Yemen in the process.

But, Ukraine!!!! Must send our uncles, cousins and sons and munitions and advisors and Navy and Air Force and Army Airborne Divisions and missile defense systems and our Billions of dollars to fight Russia. Can’t be distracted.

We really need to get some adults in the room PDQ to discuss this before it becomes a mission to recover a destroyed aircraft carrier or DDG.

I have previously explained that US aircraft carriers have never confronted peer or near peer adversaries and that their nuclear propulsion represents special risks. During the Cold War era, the only possible adversaries that could seriously hurt an aircraft carrier would have been the Soviet Union or China, though neither were likely to attack a US carrier for fear of starting WWIII.

Aircraft carriers are not heavily armored ships and while the reactors are better protected, the reactors are not the only radioactive parts of the propulsion system. There are heat exchangers, piping, pumps and other vulnerable components. Once a compartment is heavily contaminated with gamma radiation-emitting water, steam or gasses, it becomes impossible for crewmen to perform damage control. The so-called anti-radiation suits that you may have seen in films or on TV are better thought of as anti-contamination suits; they can only protect the wearer against alpha and beta radiation which are not very penetrating. Gamma radiation goes right through those suits as if they weren't there.

Now, here's the important consideration:

During the Cold War there were very few potential adversaries that could threaten US aircraft carriers or battle groups. High tech weapons which could threaten the US Navy were basically limited to the Soviets and to a lesser degree, China.

Now things are different. More and more we are seeing very sophisticated weapons in the hands of non-state actors and second and third tier nations. We are currently seeing this phenomenon as the Houthis are attacking and threatening US ships. The spread of and accessibility to very high tech weapons is constantly spreading. This is happening both as patron nations provide weapons to their clients, and also as smaller nations design and manufacture their own highly sophisticated weapons. This is a growing trend which can only be expected to grow.

At some point - which may come very quickly - US aircraft carriers will not be able to navigate near potentially hostile shores for fear of small, non-state actors wielding carrier-killer weapons.

That's something which must keep US Admirals awake at night.

USS GRAVELY shoots down two anti-ship ballistic missiles while responding to Houthi attack on merchant vessel.

Today at approximately 8:30 p.m. (Sanaa time), the container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU reported that they were struck by a missile while transiting the Southern Red Sea. The Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned/operated container ship requested assistance, and the USS GRAVELY (DDG 107) and USS LABOON (DDG 58) have responded to the ship. The vessel is reportedly seaworthy and there are no reported injuries.

While responding, the USS GRAVELY shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen toward the ships.

This is the 23rd illegal attack by the Houthis on international shipping since Nov. 19.

Another busy day for U.S. military in Mideast…Acc to a senior U.S. defense official a Danish owned, Singapore flagged ship was hit by an Iranian backed Houthi cruise missile or unmanned aerial vehicle earlier today in the Red Sea. The ship had no Israeli affiliation.

Houthis attacked MV Maersk Hangzhou in the Red Sea this morning using 4 small boats which attempted to board but were repelled by embarked security team.

Responding to the distress call, helicopters from USS Graveley and USS Eisenhower subsequently sunk 3 of the boats that unwisely fired on them.

Iranian-backed Houthi small boats attack merchant vessel and U.S. Navy helicopters in Southern Red Sea

On Dec. 31 at 6:30am (Sanaa time) the container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU issued a second distress call in less than 24 hours reporting being under attack by four Iranian-backed Houthi small boats. The small boats, originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, fired crew served and small arms weapons at the MAERSK HANGZHOU, getting to within 20 meters of the vessel, and attempted to board the vessel.

A contract embarked security team on the MAERSK HANZGHOU returned fire. U.S. helicopters from the USS EISENHOWER (CVN 69) and GRAVELY (DDG 107) responded to the distress call and in the process of issuing verbal calls to the small boats, the small boats fired upon the U.S. helicopters with crew served weapons and small arms.

The U.S. Navy helicopters returned fire in self-defense, sinking three of the four small boats, and killing the crews. The fourth boat fled the area. There was no damage to U.S. personnel or equipment.

BREAKING:

⚡ Multiple Reports that the US and UK are preparing to declare total war on the Houthis and Yemen

An Joint-Statement is reportedly expected to be made in the coming hours by the US, Britain and probably Germany, announcing that they are in Final Preparations for a Large-Scale Military Operation against the Houthis in Yemen.

The attack will include the launch of Hundreds of Missiles and Airstrikes against Pre-Planned Targets in Western Yemen and the Red Sea.

Senior Houthi officials are in Tehran at the moment.

Britain’s military is preparing to launch a wave of air strikes against the Iranian-backed Houthis creating chaos in the Red Sea, The Times reports.

Under the plans the UK would join with the US and possibly another European country to unleash a salvo of missiles against pre-planned targets, either in the sea or in Yemen itself, where the militants are based.

An unprecedented statement is expected to be released by the UK and the US in the coming hours which will warn the Houthis to “stop attacking commercial vessels” or “face the military might of the West.”

There is reporting that #Iran's Navy's IRIS Alborz has entered the Red Sea amid repeated threats by the #IRGCterrorists-backed #Houthis and U.S. sinking its small boats. Would note audio released last month of one of the distressed commercial tankers radioing for help saying Iran's naval forces were threatening to bomb his ship. Like the #IRGCterrorists spy ship Behshad, the IRIS Alborz should be a legitimate military target for the U.S. and the UK under these circumstances. 1/2
Would note in 2022, #Israel's defense minister highlighted concerns that there was the “most significant” Iranian military presence in the Red Sea in a decade. From 2022: 2/2

IRIS Alborz commissioned in 1971, 1100 tons displacement. Has been modernized, but limited capability. 8 Noor anti-ship missiles, 1 Mark 8 Gun (4 1/2"). Legitimate military target & would recommend US sink if supporting Houthis or resupplying Houthis.

I'm seeing a lot of people ask about "total cost"

At the end of the day, each missile and drone that is being intercepted is preventing casualties aboard coalition warships and civilian merchant vessels.

As for the "total cost" we don't have full picture of how each of these interceptions has happened.
That's just how OPSEC works.

I will make the assumption everything was shot down by SM-2 to make things easier.

Total cost of interceptions if everything was intercepted with SM-2.
$153.3 million

Meanwhile, the Houthis costs of launched missiles and drone ballpark
Total $118 million

$1.4 million if all drones are Shahed 136

$117 million if all missiles are Khalij Fars anti ship export variant

To the GM/OS/FC/FT and watch standers aboard these ships. Bravo Zulu keep up the amazing work!

To the crews of all ships Bravo Zulu to you as well. You guys are all upkeeping the highest traditions of the United States Navy operating to maintain freedom of the seas, Not only for our nation, but for all nations.

With the amount of interceptions maybe there needs to be something made similar to a combat ace with the Air Force, also would love to see some kill marks on the MK-45 or somewhere on the ship.

To the haters saying It's too expensive I got a quote for you

U.S. Central Command still hasn’t made any kind of Statement regarding whatever happened earlier today in the Southern Red Sea which is kind of Unusual; it appears that at least 2 Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles were launched at a U.S. Navy Ship, but the Rumors about possible Exchanges of Fire between the U.S. Navy and Houthi Gunboats appears to be False. The only Reason that I can think that No Statement has been made is due to the upcoming Military Operation by the United States, Britain, and other Countries.

On Jan. 2, at approximately 9:30 p.m. (Sanaa time), Iranian-backed Houthis fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen into the Southern Red Sea. Multiple commercial ships in the area reported the impact of the ASBMs into the surrounding water though none have reported any damage. These illegal actions endangered the lives of dozens of innocent mariners and continue to disrupt the free flow of international commerce. This is the 24th attack against merchant shipping in the Southern Red Sea since Nov. 19.
