Comments for "Forever After"

Alan, Alan, Alan.........sigh.

Any true southern story teller knows, with out a doubt, that the troops from Tennessee would have arrived and faced Carlos, far sooner than any Aladamntaxabaman or Georgian.

Other than that, excellant Sir. :dvl1:

>> At the rate we're going now the regiment is going to look like a time-warp run amok.

I'd love to see a picture of all the soldiers in various uniforms, all ready to fire their weapons!

Oh, well. I guess 'magination's gonna hafta do!

Especially if we could get the cannons in the photo as well. That would make a really cool looking picture.

Alan --
A good story! However, as a northener, I'm kinda confused by all the towns & roads. A link to a map of Florida would help a lot.

In reading the story fresh several years after I wrote it I can see that I got into too much detail as to roads and such, but at the time I was trying to more or less give a blow-by-blow of what the regiment was doing.

I used the Florida DeLorme Atlas & Gazeteer for my map work since I couldn't run down there to traverse the countryside and see it all directly. Unfortunately, the DeLorme stuff isn't available directly online so I'll suggest the next best thing - topographic maps. The Gazeteer is based on topo maps so you can get close to the same information.

Go to the TopoZone at http://www.topozone.com

Type in a place name such as where the regiment is at a given time in the story - Rye, Fl for instance - and it will present you with a topo map of that locality. Click on that map link and it will come up.

Now, on the left hand side of the screen you can select the map series you want - I choose the 1:250K series.

Set the map size to Large.

Change the View Scale to 1:250,000.

Now you'll have a decent look at the area. You can click your mouse pointer on a given point of the map and the map will follow so you can creep across the state following the roads, rivers, whatever.

Change the map series to 1:100K while leaving the map size set to Large and the View Scale at 1:250,000 and you'll get a wider view of the topography so that you can see place names, gross features, etc. When you want greater detail set the map series back to 1:250K.

It's been kind of interesting reading the story again after more than four years and trying to recall what I was thinking at the time when I wrote a given piece of the story.

Wow, you go Alan. I'm really enjoying your artwork.
Thanks!

I should point out that my grammar skills are very poor when I do the creation.

Alan,
Thank you for the latest chapter! At the end you wrote "Tell him he'll be playing Danny Deever." What is the significance of this title?

Danny Deever
by Rudyard Kipling

"What are the bugles blowin' for?" said Files-on-Parade.
"To turn you out, to turn you out", the Colour-Sergeant said.
"What makes you look so white, so white?" said Files-on-Parade.
"I'm dreadin' what I've got to watch", the Colour-Sergeant said.
For they're hangin' Danny Deever, you can hear the Dead March play,
The Regiment's in 'ollow square -- they're hangin' him to-day;
They've taken of his buttons off an' cut his stripes away,
An' they're hangin' Danny Deever in the mornin'.

"What makes the rear-rank breathe so 'ard?" said Files-on-Parade.
"It's bitter cold, it's bitter cold", the Colour-Sergeant said.
"What makes that front-rank man fall down?" said Files-on-Parade.
"A touch o' sun, a touch o' sun", the Colour-Sergeant said.
They are hangin' Danny Deever, they are marchin' of 'im round,
They 'ave 'alted Danny Deever by 'is coffin on the ground;
An' 'e'll swing in 'arf a minute for a sneakin' shootin' hound --
O they're hangin' Danny Deever in the mornin'!

"'Is cot was right-'and cot to mine", said Files-on-Parade.
"'E's sleepin' out an' far to-night", the Colour-Sergeant said.
"I've drunk 'is beer a score o' times", said Files-on-Parade.
"'E's drinkin' bitter beer alone", the Colour-Sergeant said.
They are hangin' Danny Deever, you must mark 'im to 'is place,
For 'e shot a comrade sleepin' -- you must look 'im in the face;
Nine 'undred of 'is county an' the Regiment's disgrace,
While they're hangin' Danny Deever in the mornin'.

"What's that so black agin' the sun?" said Files-on-Parade.
"It's Danny fightin' 'ard for life", the Colour-Sergeant said.
"What's that that whimpers over'ead?" said Files-on-Parade.
"It's Danny's soul that's passin' now", the Colour-Sergeant said.
For they're done with Danny Deever, you can 'ear the quickstep play,
The Regiment's in column, an' they're marchin' us away;
Ho! the young recruits are shakin', an' they'll want their beer to-day,
After hangin' Danny Deever in the mornin'.

Alan......

don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but if you changed the timeline at the header from "2001" to "2007" - this story might just be sited in the right year to make it fiction based on fact.

One of our favorites movies is "The Man who would be King" (starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine) and is based on the book by Rudyard Kipling - I am sure you know it well :D .....from 2 Kipling fans.

Howdy Addie! Welcome to the board.

Sure hope the Cubans didn't get you! :lol:.

Since I live here all of my stories are set in Florida. Saves much research effort that way.

Another great chapter Alan.

I have one of those big Huskevarna weed eaters. Two handed sucker that you can put a blade on if you want. Has a harness you strap on that it hangs on. Cuts like all get out, but will kill your back swinging the thing back and forth.

Funny thing about those scythes. When you get one that has the correct handle for your size, and get the feel for the "swing", they are really not that bad to use. Once you really learn how to use one, you can put a lot of grass on the ground and not kill yourself doing it! And they're quiet too!

Ok Alan,
I've waited 4 days...I can't stand it no more! NO WAY that was the end...you've got to at least let him get home to stay, see the new baby, etc., etc....

No, it's not the end of the story.

It is, however, the end of what I can find of the story. The next piece is chopped off about two paragraphs in so I'll have to write it fresh from there.

I'm going to try to write the next piece over the next couple of days, but I'm heavily involved in editing another work right now so just bear with me.

I'm getting to the point that I think fate or something is loading some of them up. I know I can't be doing this to myself. LOL...

BTW....this edit job....would it happen to be something you've written that we haven't seen yet?? -perk-!
