Anybody who lives in the Northeast here on timebomb, especially in the Boston area should keep an eye on this.

"Bomb Cyclone" Could Strike Northeast Wednesday, Unleashing Intense Rain And Winds

A nor'easter packing high winds and torrential rain is headed to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions on Wednesday.

The powerful storm could be one of the strongest nor'easters on record for October. If the storm strengthens in the next 24 hours, it could be classified as a meteorological "bomb."

Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and other coastal states in the Northeast could see as much as 3 inches of rain beginning Wednesday.

The storm is expected to organize in the Southeast late Tuesday and move up the coast and strike New York City by Wednesday evening.

"A very strong coastal storm is expected to impact the Northeast Wednesday into Wednesday night, including areas from Washington DC to Boston. This storm will rapidly strengthen off the Mid-Atlantic coast, and move northward into southern New England into Wednesday night. This will produce 1 to 3 inches of rainfall from southeast Pennsylvania to Boston along with wind gusts 30-50mph. This will promote rough ocean waters, coastal flooding, and isolated power outages and downed trees, particularly nearer the coastline. Localized flooding is also expected thanks to high rainfall rates, especially Wednesday afternoon and night. This storm will slowly move away Thursday," stated Ed Vallee, head meteorologist at Vallee Weather Consulting.

Weather models are suggesting that at some point tomorrow, the storm could strengthen so quickly that it would be classified as a "bomb cyclone."

Other models show winds could reach tropical storm-force (+40 mph) on Wednesday and Thursday for parts of New York City, Boston, and Portland. These winds could produce widespread power outages and damage critical infrastructure in the Northeast.

Airports in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast will likely see delays starting Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. High wind will be the primary factor for delays.

Storm and gale warnings have already been issued up and down the East Coast.

"Bomb Cyclone" = Winter Storm

MSM weather forecasts have become another feature to generate ad revenue.

Go to NOAA...

https://www.weather.gov/

Put your zip code in and get the data that applies to your area.

There is gobs of good stuff there, you just have to poke around and find it.

Better than wading through all the crap.

WTF is a "bomb cyclone?"

Scrap the hyperbole, girls. It's a storm.

Technically, it's a storm where the barometric pressure drops over 24 millibars in 24 hours. Technical term is "bombogenesis". I suspect, as always, it will be misused and overused a lot!

It's the "active shooter" of rain storms, when normal weather doesn't get the needed headlines.

Here is the NWS Forecast for my area in South Central CT...closest city would be New Haven.

Overnight: Clear, with a low around 40. Calm wind.

Wednesday Rain likely, mainly after 3pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 64. Light east wind becoming southeast 9 to 14 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 50. East wind 15 to 17 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 2 and 3 inches possible.

As you might expect this material FWIW.

The end times are here.
Anything weather related with "bomb" in the name will certainly get peoples' attention!
Kind of the same as The Weather Channel naming winter storms when no one else does.
Both of these are ways of sensationalizing events.

Cause you never see winds or torrential rains in Texas!?

It's called Autumn. Season changes often bring these storms. At least it's not a blizzard yet!

These storms are nothing new I lived on the east end of long island and sat out many of these storms. The worst that happens is some flooding here and there if there is enough rain and a few boats get dinged up from the wind.

I wish... weird brain. Of course, it helps a lot that it's a simple formula... essentially dropping one millibar per hour. If it were some odd combo like dropping 16 milibars in 24 hours or somethung, it may not have stuck as thoroughly.

OTOH, I need anyone who isn't a close family member, or someone I've seen daily for years to reintroduce themselves every time... face blindness sux!

It is a noreaster. That's it. Nothing special. May get a little more damage because all the leaves are still on the trees.

I hope it takes out the other half of my neighbors black locust tree. That is good free firewood for me.

Well at least it won't get here till later tonight. Today is my 69th birthday and I refuse to get rained on. Dh's brother and his wife are up here visiting for a couple days.
So much for our pretty leaves....heavy rain will take the rest of those down. Been snowing leaves for a few days now. Oh well........our lawn care folks will suck em all up and take em away......

So, I get a Noreaster birthday.......lol.....

No, no, no. You don't understand. This is unprecedented. Nobody has ever seen the likes of this but us. And we have to act NOW or we'll all gonna die of climate change in a decade, if not much, much sooner!

Have come to the conclusion over the years that this for me is just the INTJ brain filtering out info that I assume I will never need again. Basically, I don't give much of a care about the category (random people), and therefore, info like this is quickly Gone with the Wind. There is too much possibly useful minutia to gather and store every day. ;)

Hysteria Creep

Sheesh, it is all about RATINGS, so that means it is a "bomb," or "cyclone," yada yada yada. Still in Doomer Doug's opinion dealing with 3 inches of rain, and 40 mile plus winds pretty much all at once would make things interesting, unless, of course you actually live in the Northeast where it is no big deal.;)

Just after 4pm in Connecticut. Started raining lightly around 3:30 just as I was back to the driveway.

Still calling for rain and wind that tapers off after midnight.

WX media folks love to hype this stuff. I have lived in New England for all of my 63 years. Nor'Easters (coastal storms) are common around here and except for the dead of winter when they can produce problematic snowfall, they are, for the most part, not a big deal.

We have power. Lot of folks don't. Fair amount of damage with trees and lines down. No school for the kids. Not as bad as the Oct storm 2 years ago. Neighbor lost the other half of the locust.

Makes one wonder whether it was a conventional cluster or nuke. What a joke.

I am stuck in Boston because of this fraaking nor’easter. How many flights can be cancelled or delayed? I am about to rent a car and drive to my next stop. My fluffy Florida tail is tired of the cold already.

The wind woke me up around 3, it kept me up for an hour, it was very strong and some of the gusts were scary. I'm glad we cut down a dying tree a couple of weeks ago. The power went out for a few minutes a couple of times. It's very quiet and gloomy now.

Owner's power went off for less than a minute.

I don't like the dark.

But it came back on.

Makes one think the issue wasn't a branch taking down a line but rather a connection that got jostled - and may decide to go south later.

Around here when things go from bad to worse - they go "south."

How is from bad to worse described south of the Great Line of Mason-Dixon?

Bomb Cyclone With Hurricane Winds Knocks Out Power to 500,000 and Disrupts Travel in the Northeast

More than a half-million people in the Northeast woke up to darkness on Thursday, as an unseasonably strong Nor’easter slammed the region with rain and high winds.
Utility poles snapped, cruise ships sought shelter, boats broke from their moorings, trees were uprooted, and more than 500,000 customers in New England were without power early Thursday as the bombogenesis with winds gusting up to 90 miles an hour swept up the East Coast.

Here I was dismissing this storm...serves me right. It’s a shit show here on the Cape. Big tree damage, power outages etc. oh well I will have work for weeks to come. ALways a silver lining!

We lost power for about 6 hours. No big deal as we get this several times a year.....didn't even fire up the genny. Just rode it out. No big winds up here but there were trees going down anyway. Lots of people without power in our county and along the coast which caught the worst of the storm.........just sort of misting outside now and gloomy.

Anyway, power came back and we got real coffee instead of instant.......lol. The woodstove provided the heat for hot water. Was nice when the power kicked back on tho.

Our company who is staying in a cabin down the street never really had a problem as the owners put in a whole house genny. So, they were fine. We would love to buy that place but the owners make a mint renting it out and don't want to sell......blech..........!

So, another storm comes and goes. ho hum.......we have had a lot worse.

the wind howled pretty good overnight last night and today. My weather radio was having kittens during the night with strong storms over the eastern end of Long Island moving north onto the Eastern CT coastline. Several schools cancelled classes due to trees down in the roads impeading school busses and power issues. All good here and just another pretty strong storm system, I've seen worse but this one made it's presence known. needed the rain here.
