ENER ‘Another Day, Another Regulation’: DOE Continues War On Appliances, Locks In Regs For Clothes Washers And Dryers

I have a Samsung, this means I’ll need to order a dozen complete units lol

I’ve had that dammed thing torn apart half a dozen times in as many years  for all kinds of different broken parts

Engineered to fail

I haven’t been convinced speedqueen is a good option
We bought a Maytag Commercial after out 1985 Kenmore finally died two years ago. I was surprised at how old school it was compared to the modern, all-digital washers.

We tried to find a Speed Queen Commercial before they went digital, but the old style ones sold out when word got out that they were being modernized.

They really do not need to do anything to ruin the effectiveness of today’s washers. They are already ineffective eyesoars.

I kept my 1991 model washer up for over 20 years because IT was the old style, and it was TRULY EFFECTIVE at washing clothes.

When it finally gave up the ghost, I actually moved back in time and got two large, galvenized buckets, several very sturdy toilet plungers (only for use for clothes - the bathroom has its own plunger!), and a bucket/wringer combo like those used by building custodians.

Then, I got some clothes line for outside drying and a couple of wooden racks for inside drying.

On good weather days, I go outside and wash clothes the way my grandma did, then hang them to dry.

We also changed the way we wear clothes at the same time.

No longer do we wear something one time, then throw it into the laundry hamper even if it is perfectly clean. We usually wear an outfit several times before washing it, unless we spill something on it or whatever.

One other adjustment that I, personally made (I did not ask this of my wife): I now have “grubby clothes,’ that is, clothes I only wear on our property, while I am doing dirty chores like digging in the garden, changing the oil in the pick up, or cleaning the chicken coop.

I NEVER wash my dedicated grubby clothes!

I put them on right before I set out to do the dirty chores. I do the dirty chore, adding more dirt or grime onto the already dirty clothes. Then, when the dirty chores are finished, I take the grubbies off in the utility room and hang them on their own dedicated peg, and put clean, presentable clothes on. The utility room is on the outside ofthe house, and my wife seldom goes in there, so she never sees or smells my grubby clothes. When the shirt or jeans get so dirty that they can stand up on their own, then I just throw them away. Literally. And pick another old shirt or cheap pair of old pants to serve as my grubby clothes.

I can tolerate alot of dirt on my grubbies. I only have to throw out old grubby clothes twice, or maybe three times a year.

But that did not begin with Biden’s war on appliances.

They ruined the domestic washer years ago.

My dishwasher has learned that if she does the dishes in under 15 minutes, she won’t get prune fingers

Kidding aside, I want a sink that keeps dishwater heated, then wash as you cook

Yep, about 20 minutes here from start to finish. He does a great job, too.

I sometimes have a sink full of hot dishwater to wash up as I go when I'm cooking. Not always, though. Washing as you go makes for the overall cleanup not as bad.

We have a year-round creek with lots of large flat rocks at the edge of our property. We can wash clothes in the oldest school way if it comes down to it.

Cary bought me two #10 washtubs and two brand new washboards years ago for storage if I ever needed them to wash clothes. I already have a clothesline out back for drying them. I even have a table set up for the washtubs.

We had such things that we bought for Y2K. They're out in the barn somewhere, unless Madame Wildweasel loaned them to someone forever.

We bought our SQ two years ago the only thing digital on it is the hot water temp control, it has the old fashioned knobs, etc.

My mom had an old kenmore washer that she bought in like 1970
When she passed in 18 it was still working
My Neice took it and it’s still going
So that’s what 54 years now???

Had we known better we should have had the 30 plus year old washer fixed instead of buying a new one.
I tried that on our old washing machine. Broken gear in the transmission that cost $15. However, they are no longer available! Try buying parts for older appliances. Most parts are NLA.

Anyone notice how concerned they are about the carbon footprint of our electric appliances but never the carbon foot print of electric cars? Funny how that works.........

They just want to force everyone into having to always be near some "smart" appliance or other gadget that has a nice array of sensors...

Just like the current push I am hearing about now to make it illegal to repair cars that are over 15 years old (and in one overheard remark over 10 years).

It's "force them to spend, spend, spend" to keep the money moving at all costs, then confiscate or make everything illegal to own, make it all "rental" and then you get to chose who is able to rent what items. Viola, a completely "Owe my soul to the Company Planet" solution with everyone working in a service field, or not at all.

That's why I haven't been convinced it's a good option (cost analysis)

I get those who are happy with their 30yr old machines, but when I look at today's offerings I'm not convinced it's as good as the good ol' day's versions :shr:

look at this control panel!

Do you have a larger image, the one you posted is microscopic in size... and I'm on my iMac. Btw we don't have a digital screen on our 2 year old SQ.

My laundry room tub has a wash rack built in, don’t imagine it would be effective much

Can you go to the speed queen website and look? I’m on my cell now

No need to, mine doesn't look anything like the one in your photo. If you're willing to travel to Iowa my local dealer still has a few of the older models in his inventory.

We got a new LG top loader a few years back and my wife always has to do an extra rinse cycle or else it leaves soap in the clothes. It's really a peace of crap.

Had we known better we should have had the 30 plus year old washer fixed instead of buying a new one.

I got one for my Mom back in 2017. An LG from Sears before they went out. With all the coupons and discounts, I got an almost $1200 washer for $500 delivered and set up.

The first load I took out to put in the dryer smelt dirty. So I rewashed it.

Discovered using the highest water setting remedied the problem. So much for energy efficient.

Or the carbon footprint of literally millions of illegals who are coming into this country with nothing, expecting food, housing, medical care and schools. Lots of carbon in those footprints, but those don't seem to count.

My wife just bought that GE ultra fast washer/dryer combo unit. I don't remember when I posted about them a little bit ago, if our old washer had already quit. Well, it did. Full of clothes with a full tub of water--won't do anything. We have been washing clothes in a tub in the shower and wringing them out on my shower seat and just taking them into the laundry and drying them.

She ordered it late Wednesday night and it will be here next Wednesday. I am pretty excited about it. You can put in 50oz of laundry soap at one time. So, you just throw your clothes in, hit the play button, and come back in about 2 hours to completely washed and dried clothes. It even has an app that you can do all kinds of stuff with. $2500 out the door, but she just got her bonus at work, so, easy come, easy go. We are for sure getting the 5 year Home Depot warranty that covers everything; because I know this thing will break before then. And it supposedly only costs about 20 to 25 cents a load in electricity. And they say it doesn't need dryer sheets, so that will save some money as well.
