‘Another Day, Another Regulation’: DOE Continues War On Appliances, Locks In Regs For Clothes Washers And Dryers

The Biden administration finalized regulations for residential clothes washers and dryers on Thursday.

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it is locking in the “energy efficiency” regulations for residential clothes washers and dryers, marking the latest development in the Biden administration’s wide effort to shape markets to decidedly favor more energy efficient appliances in the coming years. The agency stated that the rules will reduce carbon dioxide emissions and save consumers money on their water and electricity bills over the course of many years.

“For decades, DOE’s appliance standards actions for clothes washers and dryers have provided loads of savings for American families while also decreasing harmful carbon emissions,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said of the finalized regulations. Her agency contends that the rules could save Americans as much as $39 billion on their energy and water bills, while also reducing about 71 million metric tons worth of carbon dioxide emissions over the next three decades.

The regulations increase the minimum water and energy efficiency levels that washers and dryers must meet down the road in order to remain on shelves. In many cases, more energy efficient units do not work as effectively or quickly as older and less efficient models, O.H. Skinner, the executive director of the Alliance for Consumers, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“Another day, another regulation from the Biden administration to remove products from the shelves and limit what people can buy in the name of their ideological goals. At this point, consumers have gotten the message: if it moves or has a motor and it is in your house, Biden would like it to cost more and probably be less effective,” Skinner told the DCNF. “Their primary rationale is that it will cost you less in the electricity bill, but don’t worry, in places like California, politicians are busy trying to drive up electricity bills, too.”

In a January opinion relating to a separate legal battle over DOE appliance energy efficiency rules for dishwashers and clothes washers, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals notably pointed out that some appliances favored by Biden administration policy “make Americans use more energy and more water for the simple reason that purportedly ‘energy efficient’ appliances do not work.”

Beyond clothes washers and dryers, the Biden DOE has also promulgated energy efficiency regulations for common household appliances like dishwashers, water heaters, furnaces and pool pump motors. The administration has also spent hundreds of millions of dollars on helping state and municipal governments pursue building codes that phase out natural gas infrastructure and favor electrification.

The DOE did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Eff them.
Need a washer or dryer? Get it now. Might need one in a year or two? Get it now.

These bastards are making a communist style command economy. Look how well that worked in Cuba. No, wait - North Korea. Oops, try the old Soviet Union. Okay, you get the idea. However, I'm sure today's U.S. bureaucrats will do it differently.

Energy efficiency, my ass...
We just bought a new dishwasher. Supposedly saves water, energy, etc.
But... you must basically wash the dishes before you put them in or they will NOT get anywhere near clean. And it takes 2 hours 51 minutes to do a load.
Sure, the dishwasher itself uses less water. But let's add in all the water used for pre-washing. Morons.

Order the spare parts that most commonly fail on these appliances now, and stock them back. Save the vids of how-to repair offline, now. No point in buying new now... (they're already pretty crappy)... and have a plan B for living without, because the price tag to make them more efficient will only go UP and availability means you will have to WAIT on an order. No just running to big box store and quickly replacing a "dead appliance".

Get ready for washers and dryers that do not get your clothes even half-way clean!!!!

Let's look at the positive side. If I buy a thousand of these pre-regulated washers now, they'll be worth a fortune in a very short time, because we all know that when these regulations take effect, the appliances that are in compliance will be pieces of junk, and everyone will want to buy the "old" styles. ;) You're welcome.

We got a new LG top loader a few years back and my wife always has to do an extra rinse cycle or else it leaves soap in the clothes. It's really a peace of crap.

Had we known better we should have had the 30 plus year old washer fixed instead of buying a new one.

You have to remember that the idiots passing these laws do not do household chores, they have housekeeping staff for that stuff.

Count on it: they'll just all disposal of PRC over runs to be sold here. Probably without tariffs or import duties

I have a Samsung, this means I’ll need to order a dozen complete units lol

I’ve had that dammed thing torn apart half a dozen times in as many years  for all kinds of different broken parts

Engineered to fail

I haven’t been convinced speedqueen is a good option

Rules obviously written by people who live in apartments surrounded by cement, who don't do their own laundry, cook their own meals, and are computer commandos. These people need to get out into the real world. Real people get real dirt, oil and grime on and in their clothing, need hot showers with lots of water to get it off their skin and out of their hair, they cook large meals and have lots of dirty dishes to clean after a hard days work. The regulators should be grabbed by their hair, if they have any, and dragged along a real person's day to experience the real world.

Sigh. Rant off.

Saved, to glorify God.
Did any one notice what's not there in that article?
Exactly what changes they have made!
I suspect they are making us wash our dishes and clothes in cold water and eliminating the hot water connection.

I was expecting it to be about natural gas dryers and water heaters

Most white goods are made by just a few companies. Electrolux is one, with units branded Frigidaire, Westinghouse also. Whirlpool also makes Maytag and Kenmore.
I think Samsung, LG and Bosch make their own, thus more pricy.

Your dishwasher can do a load in 2hrs 51min? You got the FAST model. We replaced our dead 1980s one with a new, top-of-the-line model (in stainless) that only takes 4 or 5 hours to do a load.

Madame Wildweasel will start it around 7pm and when I head to bed after the 11pm news the damn thing is still running its cycle.

Naw go ahead and rant. It's all good.

When I got off work I had to take two baths ( first one was with baby oil to cut the carbon, 2nd with soap to cut the baby oil) without getting out of the shower, SB had to come and help with my back, and still didn't get it all. Once I quit, retired, it took nearly year to get all the carbon black out of my skin as I sweated it out.

And you do know that skin is under the clothes I wore. Yeah SB had to nearly take a bath herself just from putting my clothes in the washer.

Well...nobody is going to have nothing and be happy about it right?

We won't have loads of clothes to wash, because we won't have money to buy clothes!

No dirty clothes, no washing machine needed.

My dishwasher has learned that if she does the dishes in under 15 minutes, she won’t get prune fingers

Kidding aside, I want a sink that keeps dishwater heated, then wash as you cook

SB's washer takes only about 30 minutes. But it is old.
