LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – At least five people were killed and seven were injured in a fiery multi-vehicle crash at a gas station on South La Brea and Slauson avenues Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The crash was reported about 1:40 p.m.

Video obtained by KTLA shows the moment of impact as the driver of a dark-colored Mercedes speeds through a red light — without braking — and strikes two vehicles in the intersection.

The vehicles then careened into a gas station in a ball of fire.

California Highway Patrol officials initially said six people were killed in the crash, but later updated the figure to five.

Among the fatalities: a pregnant woman and her infant, authorities said.

Witness Veronica Esquival said she covered her head for protection, as debris was flying wildly.

“All of the sudden, a baby literally flew from the middle of the intersection to the middle of the gas station and landed right on the floor in front of me,” Esquival said. “One of the workers came and saw me with the baby and took the baby out of my hands.”

Three vehicles were obliterated in the collision. At least two other were damaged.

“We have a total of at least six to seven vehicles involved, at minimum, at this time. Three became engulfed in flames,” said CHP spokesman Franco Pepsi.

The cause of the crash was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, but the CHP spokesperson said investigators determined the Mercedes was traveling “at a high rate of speed” and ran a red light while traveling southbound on La Brea.

The driver has been identified only as a female adult, Pepi said. It’s believed she is among those hospitalized.

At least six vehicles were involved in the crash, three of which were engulfed in flames, he said. The others sustained moderate damage.

From OP: "Video obtained by KTLA shows the moment of impact as the driver of a dark-colored Mercedes speeds through a red light — without braking — "

rather misleading (not you, MzKitty, but the article) as there is NO video on the KTLA website / article showing the "moment of impact"--just still pictures of the aftermath.

Of course, the B**** THAT CAUSED THIS LIVED--says she's "in the hospital".

Was probably texting.

They ought to tear her head off and put it on a pike at that intersection.

I have no more patience with these fools.

Sad. May God take the innocents to be with him and bring peace to those that were injured and to the family and friends of those killed and injured.

If the driver lived through this, she needs to be tried for murder and never see the outside of the prison walls.

Whomever the driver was, they should be executed. Period.

Horrific moment LA driver speeds through red light and slams into five cars

This is the horrific moment a Los Angeles driver speeds through a red light before slamming into five cars at an intersection, killing six, including an infant and a pregnant woman.

The black Mercedes races past a gas station then smashes into the side of a traffic jam, causing a flaming inferno in the Windsor Hills district. It sends the vehicles screeching across the street before finally coming to a stop in a mangled wreck just feet away from rows of highly flammable pumps.

The gut-wrenching pile up, between South La Brea Avenue and Slauson Avenue, killed the pregnant woman, her unborn child and the three-year-old.
Meanwhile, seven people have been left fighting for their lives with horrendous injuries following the devastating smash at 1:40 p.m.

Graphic shows the direction the SUV was going in along South La Brea Avenue when it ran the red light and caused the horrendous crash
The shocking footage, taken from a gas station overlooking the scene, starts as the Mercedes coupe races past the pumps at blistering pace.

The doomed vehicle fails to break as it bears down on the traffic flowing both ways across the packed intersection.
It slams into the first car, which immediately bursts into a sickening fireball before plowing through several others that spin from the huge impact. The crash sends them all hurtling towards another gas station across the intersection before finally coming to a stop in a crumpled mess.
The pile up came to a stop just before the second gas station over the road, which is considered an architectural icon.

And one of them appeared to have been flipped on to its roof and came to a sudden halt under the sign for the gas station. One shocked witness told NBC 4: 'Those two right there exploded, just fire everywhere.'
Another, Harper Washington, told ABC 7: 'It looked like the whole intersection from corner to corner was on fire. A lot of sparks and electricity.

'I was under the impression that, really at first I thought they dropped a bomb on us. I thought another world war had started. Then I realized it was a car into the sign.
'Once the fire went away and the booming left, I realized it was two cars there. They said: 'You could see the people on fire and that's just sad. I really pray for the people and the community.'

The gas station on the corner of South La Brea and Slauson was the scene of Thursday's accident
Debra Jackson, who was filling her car with gas, told CBSLA: 'All of a sudden, I heard a big explosion and flames went over my whole car. I though my car was on fire.'

And Veronica Esquivel added: 'I was about to pump gas and all of a sudden, I hear all of the noises from all of the collisions, and then the fire explosion and I saw things, metal and things flying in the air. So, I just covered myself behind the pump.'
The victims, who have not yet been named, included four adults, one of whom was pregnant. An infant was also killed.
Eight of the nine injured were sent to area hospitals and six of the nine are children and teens. The driver of the Mercedes is believed to be one of the people sent to the hospital with major injuries.
California Highway Patrol said after the incident the scene 'almost looks like a war zone' with car parts scattered across the street.

Horrific. Will be interesting to learn more detail about the driver and why she was going so fast and plowed into all those cars without braking, makes me wonder if her actions were intentional. Those poor, poor victims.

While a totally bad situation for sure, and I'm so sorry for the causalities, but do ya reckon they might have been on something, and thought they could go back in time 10 million years?

Cuz like unless that was what they were gunning for it don't make no sense to do that in town.

At the speed that the vehicle was traveling the driver was either absolutely insane....or, I wonder if the the gas pedal somehow got jammed to the floor or something mechanical?!?!? Very strange and we'll probably never know judging by the looks of the wreaks. WHAT A MESS!! Those poor people probably never knew what hit them.....so very very sad.

The story isn't clearly written. Was the pregnant woman with the toddler in the car the driver that caused the accident? If so, and the fact she never braked, it could indicate suicide or psychosis.

In typical SoCal fashion, no one gets out of their vehicle to render aid. Instead, they are likely irritated at the inconvenience of having to drive around the cars and debris. SMH In the videos, I see one person at the gas station running towards the vehicles.
The woman who caused this, well, it's a shame she too didn't die in a fiery ball of pain. Some reports show her holding what looks like a cell phone out the window as if she was live streaming or videoing her handiwork. If that's the case, no punishment she will receive will be harsh enough.

OMG

There was solid cross traffic in both directions at the intersection.

The lady that caused the crash must have easily been doing 60+ mph and there was no apparent attempt to stop or even slow down.

I'm thinking that it may have been a suicide attempt?

What would you have done differently? Do you have fire defeating skills that people in SoCal don't posses? The video cuts off pretty quickly after the impact, you don't know how many rushed to the scene once they figured out what happened, also, not very good to try to render aid if you don't know what the heck you're doing. Maybe you just want to bash people from California, since they are all liberal and evil.... :shr:

I would have gone to see what I could to do help, if nothing more than comfort someone. Iv'e done it before and I'll do it again. For the record, I'm a CA resident. I know we are not all liberal, gay, freaks, whatever. But I do live in the LA/OC area and I know how self centered people here can be. Can you say the same or did you just wake up in a bad mood today? Maybe you're just like that. :shr: Are you implying that since you don't have fire defeating skills, you'd have just driven off? Not all the vehicles involved were on fire. Have some compassion for your fellow man. You don't have to be and EMT to see if there is something you can do.
