While you may be 100% correct with your assessment, I disagree.
Instant responses to anything is more of a western custom I think. I would have been surprised by a knee-jerk reaction by China. I do think China will act but it will be something planned out and it might be very soon or months away.

Considering the carefully crafted unfolding of the last 2 1/2 years, and that the primary instigator of these awful events, is China, I don't think we quite understand what they have planned, yet.
I had some dreams a decade ago, where San Francisco was nuked. Could that happen now? Remember, Pelosi is San Fran Nan.
The bottom line is the US gov was overthrown by Communists, with China-bought Biden leading the charge. Their goal is to finish us off. They have made a lot of progress toward that goal.

You're right- Asians do tend to be measured and calculating in response to threats. But with the 24/7 news cycle , the us thumbing their noses at China and sending her there anyway and the empty threats they have made regarding the visit. Frankly they look like idiots right now and Winnie the xi had positioned himself as a Chinese leader but in the western construct of politician , not Chinese or Asian.
That's my reasoning behind the lack of a quick response from the Chinese. They're getting pummeled in the world court of opinion and the longer they don't do something the more face they will lose.

Possible, but I think her health and her drinking problems make that unlikely; however unlikely is not impossible. I do think it is intended at least partly as a distraction from Ukraine AND to make the Democrats "look tough." Which they hope will help them in the midterm elections, there is probably more to it than that, and you could be right. These people are so crazy, it is hard to figure out all of their motives.
