an interesting tidbit this past week on groceries. I was in Rock Hill and had time to spare so I decided to go to the Aldi there. They were a good 40 cents cheaper on some things than the Aldi close to me and closer to Charlotte. So it may work for me to go there even though it takes a little more gas. I can get gas cheaper there than here too. Same stores just about 15 minutes apart.

Pour a box of baking soda over the mess and let it sit overnight before you vacuum it up. You can also put some white vinegar in a bowl and let it sit. nearby. Should really help with the smell.

Thanks. My go-to has been X-O, because it takes out the smell of skunk spray, cat pee, and just about anything, but rotted watermelon apparently is stronger than anything else. :( BTW, I know if you have animals, bowls of vinegar keep the air smelling fresh.

Anyway, I went back to Publix. I originally had the watermelon in double grocery bags, but fortunately put them into a garbage bag as an extra precaution and left the mess on the back porch. By this morning it was totally liquid. The customer service lady, as soon as I pulled out the bag (which I had put in a padded cooler bag so it wouldn't stink up my car) said, "Oh no! Not another watermelon!" She said they've been getting complaints about melons that are rotten when cut into.

I did get another one and had the produce guy cut it in half so I could check it out; if it's not good (including doesn't taste like a watermelon should) I'm going to get my money back - I saved the receipt. If this one isn't good, well...I'll look for the guy who used to sell them out of his truck, and if I don't see him, I guess I'll wait for the heavenly feast! :)

On a more positive note, I'll have a free dinner tonight. I decided to treat myself to Wendy's for lunch because it's one of the few places left that's good and where you can eat for under $10. As I was ordering I remembered I had a survey code, so I got a second chicken sandwich for free, which will go with the refill on my free senior drink.

Incidentally, Publix (TN Valley area) was well-stocked, and it looks like they're going to have Cheerios and other cereal on BOGO starting tomorrow - you can always tell some of what's coming up by the end-cap displays - so I'll get a few boxes for my stash. The only think I wanted that they didn't have was raspberries.

Another meat score for me...

Sliced premium bacon for $1.99 a lb. I bought all four packs. 4 lbs for $7.96.

OC bought a cantaloup on Thursday and when we cut it open on Saturday it had huge spots of black mold inside of the melon. Into the trash it went.

snipped:

Port congestion and container capacity has been especially bad in China and the US but remains a global issue. Reuters reports that delays in shipments from China to Europe are subsequently causing shortages of containers to take European goods to the US East Coast. In Chile, the National Union of Fruit Producers (Fedefruta) has called for an action plan to prioritise perishable goods. Products including table grapes, blueberries, and apples and kiwis have been significantly affected by port congestion and transport delays. Transport and unloading between Chile and the port of Philadelphia is reportedly taking as much as 45 days, compared with a normal average of 20 days.

Day by day
Aldi was out of too many things to list, and some of their prices have doubled since last week.
The canned peaches that have been 49 cents forever, jumped to 98 cents !

We're seeing pretty much the same thing, here. I love Aldi's canned pears and peaches, and they have really gone up. Our stores haven't had canned pears in the last half dozen trips or so we've made. I'm not a big pear fan, but theirs remind me of fresh Comice pears which are wonderful (imho). Our Aldis are busier than ever when we go.

We make it a point to always leave our quarter in the cart for the next shopper, sort of a 'pay it forward' kind of thing. Unfortunately, after getting back to my car I've seen shoppers take the quarter(s) out of the cart I put back, and others. DH says they probably really need the money...very sad.

Dont you take NATURES WAY TURMERIC?
It DEFINITELY MATTERS which brand you get and that you don't just try sprinkling Turmeric SPICE from the grocery store on your food.

I get so tired of people saying Turmeric "Doesn't work" when they actually didn't
TRY the right stuff.

Nature's Way has several formulations.
What do you recommend?

TIA

I have RA in my hands, and without Natures Way Turmeric I couldnt move my fingers even a very little bit.
I take one a day unless I have a flare up (from staying up all night) then I have to take two in the morning and two at night to put down the flare up.

I think I saw your review on Amazon.

Is this what you recommend?
And I don't have to take bipeprine with it?

Coming soon: The $1 egg

2-3 minutes

FUQGvSVXoAY3_HH

The FJB administration told Americans to prepare to pay $1 for an egg.

Not $1 a dozen, but $1 each. For the mathematically challenged (i.e. Democrats) that's $12 a dozen.

Eggs were $1.48 a dozen when Donald John Trump's presidency ended.

Is this a joke? What exactly is going on?

The USDA reported, "An ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has reduced the U.S. egg-layer flock and drove a 10.3% increase in retail egg prices in April 2022. Retail poultry prices have been high, with historically low stocks of frozen chicken (also called cold storage). The ongoing highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak has also contributed to increasing poultry prices as over 38 million birds have been affected. The disease prevalence also impacts international demand for U.S. poultry. Price impacts of the outbreak will be monitored closely. Poultry prices are now predicted to increase between 8.5% and 9.5%, and egg prices are predicted to increase between 19.5% and 20.5%."

Those are the retail prices.

At the farm level, prices soar.

The report said, "Farm-level egg prices increased by 110.1% in April 2022. The price increases followed the loss of millions of laying hens to highly pathogenic avian influenza, primarily in Iowa and the surrounding States. Farm-level egg prices are now predicted to increase between 73.5% and 76.5% in 2022."

Stacey Lennox did the math and said, "That could mean $1.00 an egg."

Even at half that price, people will be paying $6 a dozen -- or four times what eggs cost when Trump was president.

The price already doubled.

The FJB rise in egg prices will trigger inflation in baked goods, including bread, which already suffers from rising wheat prices.

Add to that food processing centers catching fire at a record pace, and I get the feeling Democrats want the nation to go on the FJB Diet. There is nothing these ghouls won't do to seize and maintain power.

A dozen of regular large eggs at our Walmart, today, was $2.72. You had to search through several cartons just to find some that weren't broken, and the supply was way down. No shortages of anything else. Shelves were stocked to the max. The prices on everything was ridiculous! I bought for 2 weeks, and it left me with no money to go on to Sam's to do my normal shopping there which I also do twice a month. :shk: These price increases have blown my grocery budget right out of the water.

Just got back from Publix - through Sunday they have a coupon for $10 off a $50 gas card if you make a $50 purchase. They have some good stockpiling items on BOGO - all kinds of cereal, peanut butter, Progresso soups, even those long barrel lighters. The Sargento cheese that was always BOGO is now buy 2, get one 1 free, and they aren't prorating it like they do regular BOGO items - you have to buy 3 to get one free. Not a problem for me because I love cheese, but I usually buy more and didn't need 6.

I had complained to Publix corporate also about the imploding watermelon. I got a reponse telling me to contact the manager and they'd not only refund me, but replace it with another one, which they'd cut to make certain it was good. I already got a refund from the store (it was a different one), but hey, for the trouble it caused...

As for the rotten watermelon stink, well...it's been so bad I'd rather smell cat pee! :( I found a recipe where you mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, Dawn, and water and spray it on the stinky surface. It helped a little, and in desperation I soaked some rags with it and laid them on the rug. It still smells a bit, but I think shampooing the rug with some pet odor removing carpet cleaner will take care of the rest of it, although I might have to do it more than once.

Lunch at Sonic (sausage & egg toaster, fries, and a drink) was still only $6 and change. :)

Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid of turmeric, and brand doesn't matter although you want to get capsules that also contain black pepper for better absorption. I take two 2600 mg a day.
I take the Jarrow brand Curcumin 95 with out the black pepper, I take that separately. The amount varies from none to 4-500 milligrams a day. I started this years ago at Summerthyme's recommendation. I've never seen a need to change.

Smith's NE NV this morning, prices continue to rise. I thought the baby formula situation wasn't supposed to be as bad out here, but as of today, I'd say it's just as bad. There were only two kinds of formula, and only a few cans of each. Ramen was surprisingly well stocked. THere was almost no deli meat, but there were a lot of boxes on the floor, so maybe they were in the process of re-stocking. There was no price on the store brand eggs, and I didn't have time to ask. Yogurt selection was spotty. Gas is up 20 cents per gallon over last week's price.

I was at my local walmart in americus, georgia earlier today and it was COMPLETELY out of 1 gallon jugs of both 2% milk and whole milk. I had to buy two half gallon jugs of whole milk instead of my usual 1 gallon container I normally purchase.

The local dollar store in my hometown seemed to be out of the 1 gallon jugs, as well.

FWIW, regular gas in my area is also hovering around the $4.09 mark, too.

I keep seeing people can't find peanut butter. I just ordered my usual on Vitacost and they have all kinds. Granted it isn't a buck a jar but they have their brand which is relatively cheap. Free shipping at 49.00
I've ordered a lot of food, in the past, from Vitacost. Although I just don't need anything except vitamins from them right now. They usually have the best price on Jarrow Curcumin 95 than anyone else. And I like their house brand of supplements too, I've never had an issue.

I read somewhere that WalMart was having milk suppliers bottle more of what they sell in half gallons rather than full gallon jugs, because an increasing number of their customers cannot afford a full gallon, with all the other food price increases that they face as they shop.

I place my first (and last) grocery delivery order with Walmart on Thursday evening; I figured it would be cheaper than going to the store and picking up all kinds of things I didn't plan on getting. The website said it would be delivered the next day. I checked throughout the day, and it said "preparing for delivery." I got a few updates after that, all saying "running late." Today they cancelled the entire order for "delivery issues."

Never again!

Dirt roads take me home
Costco SLC area report:
6 gal buckets, (45 pounds) of wheat $25.99
6 gal bucket, (20 pounds) of rolled oats $36.99
(The bucket is probably worth $8 if you can find them.)

All rice varieties, pinto beans, and flour plentiful. I even saw a few people with bulk staples in their carts!

Fruit and veg square footage greatly diminished. Prices on produce were high.
