They are still in Ireland too, but they prefer to be called "The Good Folk" and anyone sane both respects them and leaves them the heck alone (lol sort of).Most of the fae in this world have been wiped out. Little people are still around in Iceland though. Its fascinating reading about how the Icelandics slaughtered the denizens of the faire from that island.
In Iceland, they build buildings around them, and in Old Norse, the word for Ancestor and the word for "elf" Alfar are often intertwined.
Many Tomtom and Nissa (House-elves) are believed to have accompanied their Scandinavian families to the United States and Canada.
Sometimes in 19th-century immigrant newspapers, you can still find old adverts for families looking for a companion for their lonely house-elf, and my husband's grandmother always made a tiny loaf of bread when she made bread but was never sure why.
Her family was from Norway and you always make a tiny loaf for your household Tomtom or provide him with a bowl of heavy porridge made with real butter and cream instead.
I believe from personal experience that the farm cats approved of these offerings...lol
