ASHEVILLE 10/25/08 – Supporters of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin will have plenty to see outside the Civic Center if they are unable to get inside for her Sunday appearance.

As many as 700 zombies are expected to amble up Flint Street past the Civic Center about 5 p.m., just after doors open for the Palin event.

Dan Burrello, who started the Asheville Zombie Walk in 2006, said he spoke with the Secret Service and Palin advance team about the walk.

“I mean, when you see 700 shambling dead zombies walking toward the Civic Center up the bridge, it would probably get the Secret Service's attention,” Burrello said with a laugh Friday. “So we gave them a heads up on it to make sure they know we're not doing any kind of protest or (are a) threat in anyway.”

The Asheville Zombie Walk starts at Montford Park and will end with a party at Asheville Brewing Company on Coxe Avenue.

The walk has been in the works for a year, and is organized for people who love zombies, horror films and to celebrate Halloween, Burrello said. Some of it also is a statement on consumerism and society, though the fact the Zombie Walk is taking place during Sarah Palin's visit is pure coincidence.

“It's fascinating because regardless of the party, so much of politics is mindlessly following,” Burrello said.

What The Frack?!?!?!

Ya know, I wonder what will happen when they walk past the home of a gun loving (like me) conservative who dosen't watch the news much because they are sick of all the liberal crap. This person might NOT know about the "zombie walk" and simply sees a *HUGE MOB* of shambling "corpses" coming toward his house....

I gotta tell ya, I fer one would open fire. Not now obviously, I've read the story. ;)

But seriously, a person who DOSEN'T know, has no idea, and sees that? That could be enough of a traumatic stressor to "snap them." It would be the same defense in court as the guy who shoots the person that raped his daughter. Such a sudden, shocking, and traumatic event causes a break with reality.

Keep in mind, we aren't talking about 30-40 people here..... This is HUNDREDS of "people" (sick, sick, sick people in my opinion). If I didn't know about it..... It'd be head shots fer the lot of 'em....

Scotsman, be warned! There may be trick-or-treaters in your area on or about 10/31. Some of them may look pretty weird. Please take a moment to verify what is going on before opening fire!

I guess if you lived in Asheville, you you wound not think it so unusual to see odd-looking people here and there. Presumably, if you lived here, your reaction might go something like this: Your wife says, "Hey Scot, there's a bunch of zombie-lookin' types comin' up the street!" You'd say, "How many?" and she'd say "about 700" and you'd both agree that 700 seems like a reasonable number for this time of year.

If you would like to use an occasion like this to go and check your ammo supply, please do so. I think that I remember reading somewhere that hollow-points are recommend for zombies. Just don't go gunning for zombies this week without checking first to see if perhaps some of them are your neighbor's kids.

122 Reginans take part in 'Thriller' record attempt
Veronica Rhodes, Leader-Post
Published: Saturday, October 25, 2008

REGINA -- It's close to Halloween and something evil was lurking in Northgate Mall.

On Saturday, an unusual gathering of people sporting their best zombie outfit took part in a classic choreographed dance to the Michael Jackson hit "Thriller." Ghoulish face paint, back-combed hair and shredded clothes were common amongst the participants who stomped, spun, and hissed in sync, following the dance made popular in the song's video.

Jared Brandt organized the Regina event, which was part of an international effort known as Thrill the World. On Saturday, people in 84 cities in 12 countries dressed up as zombies and simultaneously danced to the song.

Brandt, an education student at the University of Regina, said that while searching for dances he could teach to students during his second year internship, he stumbled upon the Thriller dance on YouTube.

"From there, I found out there was this organization that did the Thriller worldwide every year. I joined in on that and now we're doing it here in Regina," explained Brandt.

Several teachers in the city taught the dance to their students and contacted Brandt about their classes taking part in the event. He estimated that 80 per cent of the event's participants were elementary school students, who weren't even alive when the song became a hit in the early 1980s.

"I wasn't even alive when the song came out. It came out in 1982 and the video came out in 1983 so this year is the 25th anniversary of the video. I'm 20 years old, most of these kids are 12, 13 years old," Brandt said.

Despite the song being before his time, he has always had an appreciation for it and the dance it spawned.

"I always loved the song and I always loved zombies. There is something about both of them. Michael Jackson has probably some of the best choreography in the world," Brandt said.

Zombies were also a draw for Bianca Hatin, who decided to take part in the event after learning about it on Facebook.

"I've always had an interest in zombies so I figured why not?" Hatin said, as she waited in line to register.

Admittedly a Michael Jackson fan as a child, Hatin did some practicing at home before taking part in the dance on Saturday. She was decked out in a shredded business suit and icy blue-coloured contact lenses with a fake bloody lip and dripping gash on her head.

"I am an office zombie. I was in the office when I got brutally attacked," she explained.
Eleven-year-old Atayah Davis first heard about the event from her music teacher and learned the dance from her friends. Her zombie outfit was topped by some dried-up leaves stuck into her disheveled hair.

"I got them from the plants over there," she said, gesturing to a large potted plant in the mall.

Brandt also organized the Regina event as an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest Thriller dance in one location. The record was previously set in Toronto in 2006 with 62 people.

The dance was videotaped and several official observers were necessary in order to challenge the Guinness record. But the event held at Northgate Mall also drew a large crowd, which applauded appreciatively when the dance was done.

Once the final tally of participants was completed, Brandt announced to the crowd that 122 people had taken part in the dance, nearly double the previous record.

Participants were also encouraged to make a charitable donation with all the money raised going towards the Regina Open Door Society.

Inmates in a PI prison reenacting the MJ Thriller dance number...........including a man in drag as the leading "lady".

And let me tell you, that was one UGLY woman!!!

But seriously, zombies scare me!! It took me about four tries to get through "Shawn of the Dead"! So if one fine day I looked out my front window and saw an army of the living dead searching for brains, I would totally freak out!!

Gee but doesn't that cut into Obama's voter base?

DM

Well, technically... zombies are the "living dead", the Democrats historically prey on the "dead" for votes, not the "undead".... so McCain is safe on a technicality since the zombies would theoretically eat the poll workers and therefore could not vote since the voting site would be closed, since the eaten poll workers can't verify a voter's validity...

AHA! Mayhaps this is the reason that we see the Democrats lamenting that some voting places are closed when democrats come to vote....

it's those damned undead and their relentless pursuit of brains...

I bet those undead leave the Democrat Poll areas a bit hungry...
