8-year-old dies after eating strawberries from school fundraiser, police say

Aaron Chatman, Emily Van de Riet

HOPKINS CO., Ky. (WFIE/Gray News) – Police in Kentucky are investigating after they say an 8-year-old boy died after eating strawberries from a school fundraiser.

Hospital staff said they treated other patients who had also eaten the strawberries.
The Madisonville Police Department said officers were called to a home around 6:30 a.m. Friday for an 8-year-old boy who was unresponsive and not breathing.

The family told police that their son had eaten several strawberries from a school fundraiser the night before.
They say he began showing signs of an allergic reaction, which primarily manifested with a rash.
It’s unclear if the child had a known allergy.
Police said the family gave him Benadryl for the symptoms and soaked him in a bath.
When the symptoms would not go away, the family reportedly took him to the emergency room around 10:30 p.m. Thursday and then brought him back home several hours later.

Police said the family tried to wake him up for school Friday morning and discovered he was unresponsive.
While detectives were investigating in the emergency room, several staff members told officers that other patients had come in for treatment after eating strawberries believed to be from the same fundraiser.
After the boy’s death, the Hopkins County Health Department warned the community to not eat any strawberries purchased at school fundraisers in Hopkins County.

The boy’s identity has not been released. His autopsy is pending, but a preliminary report from the medical examiner said the death “looks like an isolated allergic reaction,” the health department said Friday afternoon.
Still, the health department is warning people not to eat the strawberries.
The strawberries were distributed by fundraisers for Madisonville North Hopkins High School and Hopkins County Central High School athletics.

Officials said the strawberries were grown at Southern Grown and Sizemore Farms and were distributed by Juicy Fruit LLC.
The Department of Public Health Environmentalists are reportedly taking samples of the strawberries to the state lab for testing.

fentanyl laced assaults are many of our worst nightmares- but the idea that more than one unfortunate soul would be sickened by product bought/sold/ingested from same locale seems to work against the idea of an "allergy", doesn't it?

An amazing number of people are allergic to (red) strawberries and they are usually unaware of it. They are allergic to the protein that makes them red. Strawberries show up on the top of lists of fruit with nasty pesticides. I never heard of anyone dying from them. Usually, people avoid them so that they don’t develop additional allergies to things Iike latex.

My dad had to be life flighted when he went into anaphylaxis eating strawberries, he was below when it happened which made things worse, coal miner, I didn’t realize there’s a latex connection, I’m allergic to all latex products.

We emailed a different strawberry farm in the same city where Sizemore Farms is located, because we have some organic strawberries from it.(plant city, fl)

We want to make sure this farm isnt affiliated with Sizemore Farms.

We haven't gotten sick off these organic ones from another farm but we are curious to know if they are testing there's for anything bad because of this.

These days you never know if some terrorist went around to several groves, lacing product.

I'd guess with the reports of multiple feeling ill that it was some kind of contaminant in the storage environment, or in whatever was used to clean them- still boggles the mind that a "simple" allergy would hit multiple people.
..hopefully it was a tragic cascade of innocent circumstances and not yet some kind of deliberate onslaught : (

If fentanyl he would not have gotten better at the hospital and be sent home then get worse again. Unconfirmed report just means someone made it up.

Poor reporting did not mention what the "others" who were treated were treated for. When I worked in a jail if one inmate claimed the food was bad and puked, the entire pod did the same. The other 15 pods and 600 people ate the same food but had no illnesses at all.

That is one of the possibilities- and recall sometimes what one denigrates as "poor reporting" is actually a reasonable portrayal of the known facts in an unfolding situation-

Saved, to glorify God.
Well, strawberries, thats one of the things I suddenly
couldn't smell or taste since about 2 years ago. I think i had a 2 week case of Covid or a bad, bad cold. I didn't test.
So I quit eating them.
