Chloramines

Do the Berkey filters take out chloramines? I have read that only one type of filter works on chloramines--and it wasn't the Berkey.

While the berkeys have not been tested specifically for chloramine, further research indicates that Black Berkey purification elements should significantly reduce/remove chloramine in your water. This is based on information that a "carbon filter will remove chloramines" as long as it is made of high quality carbon and sufficient contact time is allowed; both of which are the case for the Black Berkey purification elements.

Sufficient contact time is at least 10-15 minutes. Does it take that long to filter through the Berkey?

We have not seen any of the possible side effects of chloramine in the water yet--skin rashes, etc., so I am not too worried about it in our washing water. But, I am very leery of it in our drinking water.

Perhaps you could PM me so that I don't hijack your thread. :)

The black berkey elements have a few seconds contact time instead of having the water pushed through the filters like on a whole house filter. While it is only a few seconds, contact time of 15-20 minutes sounds highly impractical with any type of filter system. I have heard of a lot of filter systems, and most of them have very little contact time, or less than the few seconds that the black berkey elements have.
