Praying for Buzz and Sandcastle who are in danger's way!!!

My father was an engineer at Pantex years ago and we lived in the nearby town of Panhandle so the area is familiar. What concerns me is the nuclear aspect of the weapons storage even though it's all underground. Fires can destroy sensitive equipment.

That is one massive stretch of fire that appeared on satellite all at once. Not suspicious at all.
Mostly flat terrain, wind gusts is forty plus mph, very low humidity, these fire storms can move upward of 200mph, and live embers can travel upwards of five miles. This is not the mountains of California we’re talking about here. Wildfires here on the prairie and plains can raze a huge area in just a few minutes.

That's right and the winds are constant. Going down the interstate, you see trees living but permanently bent in one direction.

One HOPES that the south side of that conflagration doesn't light up big. You could have a half-of-the-panhandle-wide fire heading south. And THAT would suque worse a LOT of stuff that comes immediately to mind.

The south side blew up last night when that front changed Wentz from W to N.

Why it went from 250k to 1M+ acres, overnight.

Tonight, when the winds shift to the south, I can see the fire going north if there is anything left smoldering on the north side.

The further west you get in Iowa, the more bent trees you will see, those that don't live out on the western prairie/plains don't understand. and WalknTrot is correct most of canada is on fire every single. year, last year it was really bad up by Yellowknife, a few years back it was Fort Mac that burned to the ground. Now this extreme drought pattern is rearing it's ugly head here in the US, especially on the Front Range, etc., so expect to see more of these massive fires.

Smoke filled the sky over the panhandle town of Fritch, Texas, on Tuesday, February 27, as a wildfire prompted officials to order evacuations in the area.

The fire, dubbed the Windy Deuce fire, was one of several fires burning in the Texas Panhandle region on Tuesday.

The fire had burned 8,000 acres and was 20 percent contained as of Tuesday afternoon, according to forest service officials. Video captured by the Eagle Press, a local paper, shows wildfire smoke filling the skies over Fritch on Tuesday.

The reporter, who identifies herself as Tara, says, “My town is in danger and it’s burning. Frankly, I’m just gonna say I’m sad right now.”

Ranchers are offering the use of their land for the displaced cattle and horses. I also saw on my Facebook feed that feed stores are loading up tractor trailers with round bales of hay to donate. I love how ranchers help each other out.
Especially poignant since most ranchers/farmers within reasonable hauling distance are also suffering from feed shortages due to the drought...

The newer satellite indicated hot spots are showing up south of this morning's perimeter lines of the big fire.

Looks like it's still creeping south.

Thank you for the NASA link Millwright. Strange that the "town" or company houses for Pantex isn't labeled but I saw there was a lake called Pantex further north of what I think was the facility/town. I was unable to magnify any closer to fully confirm that was indeed Pantex.

If that is Pantex, the squared area is where the weapon depot would be. When dad brought us on the facility, they looked like rows and rows of earthen covered igloo "hills" with a steel door in front. (Everything is obviously underground.)

This site will zoom down to mile-section resolution.

Showing hot spots within a coupla miles of the Pantex plant.

Sorry for not updating but it has been hectic .We got in to check our cows and house around 2 this afternoon . My house is fine , I don't know how , and I confirmed my daughter's home and my other spot that was my Dads are total losses . We can deal with the losses as we are all safe .
I would like to thank everyone for the well wishes and prayers , they are much appreciated.
I've got the generator running for our freezers and tomorrow I'll get it set up for the well .I should have had that done already .
With all of the dry fuel , sustained 40 mph+ winds and 70 mph gusts these fires are impossible to contain. This is a common thing around here but so many fires at once with the winds not able to make up their mind which way to blow they can devastate large areas . After posting last night from our evacuation spot in North Amarillo we had to leave again. We went South to Tulia and found a motel .
Once again thanks for the well wishes and prayers !FB_IMG_1709147179009.jpg

I started texting DIL at 6 this morning…sorta miffed w/ her, she didn’t bother to update me until 10:30…arrrgh !! At that time she said her parents house in Fritch was still ok, and the fires were far enough away from Amarillo where they live. Shared that at least 40 houses on Lake Meredith have burned but no info on loss of life.
This has probably changed due to the winds shifting but with the lack of communication from her (besides her quoting that google says over 500,000acres have burned and it is zero contained at that time..SMH) I’m sorta put out, to say the least. I haven’t heard anything from my son but that is normal once he got to his level of training…they lock em down real hard for national security reasons. Being a worried mother holds no water w/ them…lol.
Looks like another long night for me…didn’t get to sleep till 2am and had to get up at 5:30 for work. Snapped on few entitled kid-lets at work but you don’t tell me what to, you ask me politely…lol. Oh well, I can sleep when I’m dead.
So I’ll be watching and refreshing this thread while using the links provided to try and stay updated on its path. If it turns south, Amarillo could be toast. I’m praying that’s not the case and would still appreciate y’all’s prayers. Thank you!!

On the evening news last night, they talked about the fires crossing over into Oklahoma. This morning they are reporting 30K acres here burned in the western part of the state. The dusk sky was filled with smoke last night. After dark, as the winds started to bring in the cold, I realized that one of the shutters on the chicken coop wasn't shut, so I went out to shut it. It was snowing a fine ash with the winds. A LOT of ash.
I know what that terrifying ash snow is like. My prayers go out for all of you that are involved.
