What to do with a swimmimg pool motor?

We had to replace a pool motor that had some barrings get out of whack. My DH told the guys to just leave it instead of taking it with them.

Are there any uses you all can think of? I think it could be reworked, but he hated to get rid of a motor.

Any ideas?

Probably not worth the effort to rebuild it. I'd dismantle it, and strip out the copper if it were me.

I don't have a pool so I'm not familiar with these motors. Mechanic may very well be right, but if it is possible to repair it for a nominal amount, maybe you could use it to pump water out of a rain barrel to irrigate your garden?

It may or may not be worth rebuilding. Bearings are cheap, as are (usually) the seal for the pump. THe pump bearings may not be inexpensive though. You need to provide more information:

How much was the replacement motor?
Did you have to replace the pump as well?

You could take the pump and motor to a motor repair shop and see how much they will charge you for rebuildioing if it is only the motor that needs repair, and then you would have a spare.

ANyone that is handy with tools can replace bearings and pump seals.

Thanks for the replys. It will cost about 400 to fix it, but I think my BIL could replace the bearings and seal for free.

I like the idea of running a pump for watering the garden. How to hook it up to the rain barrell could be interesting.

What would I do with the copper? Sell it?
then you would have a spare

Another good idea.
