…… What Do I Need to Know to Grow a Dwarf Cherry tree?

I was just looking at the Gurney’s seed catalog, and they have several dwarf cherry varieties listed. They look so enticing! They have one variety in particular, which they call Wowza, that particularly gets my attention.

I am in Zone 7.

Gurney rates this dwarf tree for Zones 2 thru 7, but can you really grow cherries as far south as Memphis?

Also, do cherry trees have to be planted in pairs for pollination purposes? The Gurney catalog does not address this issue.

Have any of you ever grown a cherry tree?

Thank you in advance for your insights and help with this.

Have planted two. Didn't do well in winter in MI.
What I was told and read, they need to have a cherry tree within a mile. Doesn't matter if its sour or sweet.
Best of luck! I just probably didn't do something right because I know others here who have cherry trees.

Barry, I live just north of I-40 about halfway between Little Rock and Fort Smith. We have lots of those trashy wild cherry trees in this area and if they grow where you are, maybe they would be sufficient to help with pollination, provided that they bloom at the same time as the type you are thinking of planting.

You will on the onset, need Snow Whites permission. If you do get it, grab Doc & Dopey which is a very important combo as Dopey can’t exist without Doc and vice versa. If anybody knows how to take care of a dwarf, Doc is your man!!! :trl:

If you want to plant a sweet cherry, you need a cross-pollinator. If you want a sour cherry (Hoosiers also refer to them as pie cherry trees), they are self-pollinating. I have one semi-dwarf Montmorency sour cherry tree and it produces plenty of fruit every year that we don't have a late freeze. The main thing about cherry trees is that they don't like wet feet, so plant it where it will have good drainage and won't get water-logged if you have a lot of rain.

Stark Bro's Nursery has at least one variety that is a self pollinating cherry tree.
Barry... I've had very poor results from any live plants from Gurneys over the years. The fact they don't supply pollination info is enough to tell you they don't care whether you get cherries or not.

I'd strongly suggest you look at Stark... their website should provide sell the info you need.

There is a self pollinating sweet cherry.. I think it's Stella. I got wonderful crops from one in zone 5b, but don't know how warm they will tolerate.

Most of our orchard came from Stark's. We are very pleased with them. They also have a one year warranty on the trees.

Actually, I was thinking I might need to find a Gypsy who could help me consult with George Washington, via a saince.

After all, why DID. he chop down that cherry tree?

Inquiring minds want to know...
