Crazy weather this year. Some folks freezing to death while we hit 80 again yesterday. Cold weather crops bolting to seed, but it's not safe to plant the warm weather stuff yet for fear of further hard freezes.

Makes for a crazy prep situation at times. Bought another 20lb LP tank last night. Thanks to the government mandating design changes in the tanks half of the ones I own are the two older designs so can't be refilled. Thanks a lot.

How're the rest of you coming?

I bought my first two 20 lb. LP tanks a couple of weeks ago and I've been keeping an eye open for a place to have them filled. I finally saw a gas station around the corner from where I live that carries filled containers in exchange for yours......my nice shiney new containers. Is that how it's supposed to work with these or are there places where I can have them filled while I wait?

So how many is enough?

I also am planning a two week camping/off road trip in September as a cover for purchasing more prep items including a 12V DC cooler/freezer, a solar panel/battery, a coleman hot water maker, a camper shell for my truck, etc. Been searching the web for campgrounds with or near shooting/archery ranges to give these a try (never done either) and also a ruse for perhaps purchasing items as preps as well as recreation.

I bought a Mr. Heater Buddy heater at Home Depot for 1/2 price on cleareance Monday. Saturday I found a hose kit to connect it to a 20Lb. tank at Tractor Supply. I stopped at Wal-Mart and picked up some 1 Lb. tanks as well. A trip to the flea market found a car charger for my cell phone for $5.00.

We traded our old tanks in at Lowe's last summer. They didn't charge any extra for the exchange. I think each cost $12, but it will probably cost more now.

Busy, busy here. Bought 4 boxes of kitty litter (140 lbs) today to add to the stash. Hit PetsMart last week and got another round of canned food for dogs and cats. I buy every 30 days and try to get 6 weeks of stuff each time, so I gradually build up. Have about 8 months of canned in reserve right now.

Inventoried the new cabinet with all of the first aid stuff and had my sweetie (a nurse) go through and make recommendations. We weren't missing much (except antibioitics, which I will order next week--old ones are really old), but we needed more stuff like gauze, things we didn't have room to store a lot of before. Once I had a shopping list we hit a couple of stores and spent about $75 for a start. I will gradually be adding things later.

More organizing and cleaning to do. I need to get all of this stuff out of the den and packaged away. I also am going to try dehyrdrating some eggs this week and will also can some butter.

Oh, and I finished my taxes. Getting a few bucks back, not much, but at least I don't have to pay.

Where do you order your antibiotics and other med supplies? It's where I'm lacking, too. Got lots of first aid supplies, including gauze, tape, antibiotic ointments, neosporine, bandages, Propan-2-ol, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, lot more even crutches.

Busy weekend here, too.

I felt the need to store more shelf-stable meat, so loaded up on Turkey Spam, canned tuna and two 10 lb. tubes of burger (put in the freezer for canning later as I empty more jars of garden produce). Picked up a 4 pack of the Sam's Club canned turkey to try. It's a bit cheaper than the chicken and should be good with noodles and sauce, in gravy over rice or for turkey soup. Got a great deal on fresh green peppers, so put a bunch of packages in the freezer for stir fry and jambalaya.

Purchased almost all of my garden seed for next season. Have the list ready for the rest to order over the internet.

It's been cold this weekend, so have been keeping an eye on the Econo-heat panel in the laundry room. Seems like a success story so far. Temps in the room have stayed an even 72-74 degrees even on the worst night. With the -25 nightime temps plus 30mph winds, have been trying to keep one of my driving horses from freezing. He had to be body clipped to undergo some diagnostic tests a few weeks ago and is still showing pink skin over half his body....Brrrrrrr!

I think we've made it through the worst of the cold now. Ready for spring any day! :)

Second half of the month is not usually the right time for me to be buying anything except essentials or paying the bills. We both get paid monthly, at the end of the month.

However, I did rebuild the kerosene supply. We use it for heating our outbuilding when necessary, as well as for emergency heat in the house.

Dw and went to Sams this weekend and bought up a few extras. I have been looking at there vacumn sealer and just count'nt wait any longer. I bought 50 lbs of popcorn and have been sealing it up in small portions. I will seal a lot of our other supplies in time. I hope to have a little extra cash coming in soon as I will start a new job Monday. I bought some extra medical stuff last week and extra T.P. and paper towels. I got the reciever mounted on the truck and the new hitch welded on the trailer. I hope to get new side boards installed so i can carry more in the trailer. I have acquired a lot of lumber in the last few months and will try to take it to the retreat as soon as possible. This is to be use to seal up several rooms that are studded up and will help strenghten up the place. I have a full schedule for the next several months. Dont stop just keep on prepping..........

All you want at www.drsfostersmith.com Fish Antibiotics. Same stuff you get at the pharmacy. I worked in Pharm distribution for awhile. Same stuff as the human kind.

This week I went through my back up battery bank and found one battery had failed. I hooked up the charger and it just kept charging. I found one battery was hot and took it offline. Junked it. Hooked up the remaining batteries and now all is well. This battery bank will provide us with a fair amount of both 12 volt and 110 via inverter in a SHTF scenario. It is located in our makeshift fallout shelter.

Also reorganized the make shift fallout shelter. It is actually well set. We store our normal "camping equipment" in one area of our basement and organized a bunch of "bulk" mass down there so we can hunker down if ever necessary. There is also a wood burner there that we do not use now as we have a outdoor woodboiler, but would come in handy if we had to spend a few days down there. We are pretty far from most targets now that ELF (Clam Lake Wisconsin) and KI Sawyer AFB (Yooperland northeast of us) are all shut down now, but you never know. Resupplied the wood pile so there is at least a week or two worth. The wood also is part of the "mass".

Food supplies are all rotated and in great shape. Hand pumps for water all working great. Assembled some fresh ashes in 5 gallon pails to use in the fallout shelter for human waste disposal and all is ZEN as best I can see.

I guess if I ever develop a case of dropsy or hole-in-the-head...

Aah yes, the doctors....know them well. They got a direct link to my wallet. I'm expecting an order from them today or tomorrow. I'll have to modify my shopping list for my next order. I have them up on a separate tab (mozilla). Wow, I haven't ordered fish meds in a long time. I was expecting Doc WellFish.

I also have ThomasLabs up and their fish antibiotics are pharmaceutical grade, whereas some of their bird antibiotics are feed grade. The also have an unusual sentence at the top saying, "Not to be given to fish intended for human consumption." Kind of odd at a fish med page. http://www.thomaslabs.com/thomaslabs_007.htm

I wonder how long they last. I might just order one of everything, but then, they might get suspicious.

Thanks Charlie.

1.20 lbs. cost $11.99 in shipping charges. Ugh!

Thanks Charlie.

Our local store had a great deal on eggs, so I stocked up a bit. Large 18-pack for $1 each.

Also picked up a few more cans of veggies.

Need to start stocking up more pet food now.

Could be that the items you ordered are on backorder. They don't charge your account until your order is shipped. I'd call if I were you just to make sure, they are really very nice.

One more LP tank, corner posts and pins, and some fencing for the new henyard. Gonna go to 80 again today. In July I'd be ecstatic to have a high of only 80, but in February it's HOT!

Ordered seeds.
Put some layers on the compost heap.
Butchered my first deer.
Walked home from work on my emergency route- I've always driven it, but never walked it before. Took 1 1/4 hours. Wasn't too sore the next day or two!

I am concentrating more on doing things than buying things.

I broke ground Saturday on our "hurricane room". It will be about 8x10-steel reinforced concrete construction. I plan to install a steel door(inswing;) )that I'm still designing along with a steel tubing 2x6x1/4 frame. I'm still not decided on a roof for the room-something strong....but as for the rest I'm good to go. Lots of work but I have the time now. June is just around the corner so I hope to be well done before the storms start:spns: Good luck to the rest of you with your projects!

I've been trying to eliminate the many things on my "honey Do" list since DH really does not have the time.

Yesterday I repaired a door, slopy but I did it. Today I went to home depot and got the trim for the inset to make the fixed pannel look more like the original. I have the wood glue but didn't realize we don't have the right size brads so I gotta go back tomarrow.

While I was there I got some foam insulation to seal up some leaks and new furnace filters.

I am still scared of the power tools but I am getting better.

For the last year I have been taking over many of the homestead and other duties that DH usually did because he has been in school full time and working full time. Looks like I am going to have to teach myself alot of these things because he simply does not have any more brain space.

BUT I absolutelly draw the line at using the chain saw...........forget it !

Last week I asked DH to pour some chlorine down the shallow well and then in the spring I will pump it out and have the well tested again..He must have forgot.
Guess I'll have to go out to the barn and dig around for a wrench to remove the check valve. I think I am in over my head..............What is a check valve?

I learned the hard way to keep kitty litter in my trunk! Long story, but ended up stranded away from home for a few days..after doing a spinout, turned around and went back to my friends house cus it was closer..waited to get home until yesterday. The snow that froze and stuck with the ice that came down is starting to melt. I was very lucky in my spinout in that I didn't damage the car any..just has a minor dent where a tree finally stopped the spin..a truck was behind me with kitty litter...put it under the wheels for traction, and gave the car a nudge from behind, to get me back on the road..then it was just four miles back to friends house, where I called home and said until the roads are better, that's where I'm staying! When I left, I was right behind a snow truck, dropping of that 'dirt/salt' dust, because there wasn't that much ice to need to scrape anymore...and first thing I did when I got home was put a bag of kitty litter in my trunk..already have food, blankets, and first aid kit..now I have kitty litter too!

I struck gold at the produce clearance cart today. I got three bags of sliced carrots for .25 each, 3 bags of potatoes for $1 each, celery for .25, and the real prize... 3 whole, peeled pineapples for .25 each!!!! My dehydrator has been going non-stop lately. I have never seen pineapples reduced before and certainly not for .25. The cashier over-charged me, not realizing they were reduced, and I had to go back and get a refund. They were originally $4.99 each!!!! I was so excited! I'm finally getting a stash of dried food built up. I bought a cabbage the other day and dried it to use for soup. I found canning jars at Walmart tonight and got 2 cases of pints for $6.44 each. I can't believe how expensive they're getting. I found another Tupperware container at GoodWill tonight to put some of my stuff in. I use them for my taco seasoning and onion soup mix and stuff like that to keep it dry and mouse free!

Just a quick question here. I've noticed a "lack" of archery talk here. Everyone talks about guns, but as i see it archery is an important part of prepping. I have been shooting recurve and compound since I was 6 or 7. A bow can be a formidable weapon and is in my opinion indispensable in hunting. I have hunted bird, small game , and large game w/ great success. Arrows are also a renewable weapon as opposed to bullets. I have fletched, tuned, and even made my own flights from turkeys. Maybe I am foolish but a little focus on archery should be brought to TB2K.

we have a brooder room in one of the bays in the barn, and we worked on getting that set back up. we are ordering peeps this week.

normally we don't order until around the first of april, but with the bird flu/tsc not carrying chicks, don't know what will happen, we figured to get our birds early.

we're getting about 50 layer peeps, and 50 meat chickens and 20 turkeys.

this year i'm going to see if i can get a tom and a hen to keep, and see if we can't perpetuate some of our turkey needs.

we've got a pretty good set-up in the barn, although not optimal because it's not warm outside for them to go into the runs we have for raising our meat chickens and our turkey pens.

basically, after they are feathered up, the layers go into the main chicken house, in a segreated part, so they get acclimated to the current flock. the meat chickens and turkeys will go into the large bay, 50x70, and it has windows all along the two outer walls, and we'll put straw on the barn floor, and basically they will be raised on the floor, although there are ladders and things that we can set up for roosts.

it is such a dilemma, to raise them that way, but we're hoping that it would only be for march and by april that the weather will be mild enough for them to go to the coops and runs we have set up outside.

it's either that, or if something happens, there's no home-grown poultry, for who knows how long.

we have rabbits, for pets. they are in the house with us. we talkeda bout getting into raising rabbits for meat.

Easy - start a thread. Also see last week's prep-thread - you'll see longbows mentioned.

and SINCE you brought it up!! I have an archery question! The longbows are 20# draw at 28" - what sort of arrows should I get for them and where would you suggest I shop for them? Thanks!!

Wargus

I would start with some "cheep" aluminum arrows . Start with arrows that have "vanes" (plastic flights), and not feathers (feathers will be damaged more easily by an inexperienced shooter, but are more accurate). Wood arrows are harder to master and find (at least good ones) and are not as durable as aluminum. Also you should take into consideration weight. Heavier arrows will have more kinetic energy but at 20#'s your distance will be considerably less. Start with a med/light weight to build confidence. Also Garnder MTN, Fleet Farm, and your local archery shop (they are usually the best) will help you out. Do not forget the weight of your arrow head makes a huge difference. targets tips @ 100 or 80 would work well. I will start a Archery thread tonight. Thanks

Krogers here in my area having a 10 for $10.00 on lots of canned goods. Stocked up on those. I noticed most of the items had expiration dates 2 yrs. out. I think this is a lot cheaper way than freeze dried food although I do keep some of that also. Now if I could just find a drugstore that put their items on clearance I would be happy. I just don't get the price of over the counter meds.
I will also check Lowe's and Home depot for any end of season sales on heaters, propane tanks, etc. I have found the 20 lb. tanks unfilled at Sam's for 25.00, not sure if this is a good price or not.

I got my two 20 lb. containers at HD for the same price.

I just ordered penicillin from Drs.Foster&Smith for $33 along with other stuff for my aquarium. I don't know which is the best antibiotic to order to add to my preps. Maybe someone who has better knowledge of these things can let me know which I would be best to have on hand.

I also ordered some a gallon of organic Castille liquid soap and a variety of green, red and twig teas from www.mountainroseherbs.com I've been using the soap for 6 months now and really like it. Here's the info.

A truly luxurient, extra mild and gentle liquid soap made from 100% certified organic ingredients.
No harsh chemicals, additives, colorants, sudsing agents or other ingredients, just pure derivatives from plant sources.
Great for the face, body, as an all purpose wash, and it makes a wonderful base ingredient for your own soaps and shampoos. Enjoy the cleaning power of pure liquid castille soap that suds beautifully, without leaving a residue. The 8 ounce bottle comes in retail package with pump top and all other sizes are packaged in bulk plastic bottles. Contains: Water, Saponified Organic Coconut and Olive Oils (with retained glycerine), organic Jojoba oil, organic Aloe Vera, and Rosemary extract. The 8 ounce retail bottle is packaged with a pump top and the other sizes are packaged in bulk.

Check out the teas, they got some really unusual ones from Japan.

I was just at Big Lots and they have something an apartment dweller might find handy.

For $7.99 they have a small indoor grill that uses sterno cans for heat. Think of it as a fondue pot grill setup. These have the benefit of being able to be used indoors easily (unlike charcoal) and can be used with a pot to allow water to be boiled, etc. Very simple setup. Of course, you'd need sterno. I have heated a fondue setup with a votive candle in a pinch, however.

Reminder

Don't forget to have scissors in your preps. I have 2 pair utility scissors to cut thin metal, rope, things like that, 4 pair of scissors to cut cloth, and 2 pairs of hair cutting scissors. Also make sure to have a sharpening stone for your knives and scissors.

...Actually, I have about 2 campstoves and 50 bottles of disposable bottles of propane in a storage cabinet in the garage directly beneath my bedroom. :shkr: I actually have a lot of storage space for being in an apt. and I plan on getting a gas BBQ grill this year.

I just got home from running an errand and find that our water has been turned off for some reason or other, I think it's the street work that been going on since last year. Anyway, I go to turn on the water and all I get is a slow flow and no hot water. My mind automatically went to "camping" mode and used some grey water to flush the toilet and I have my bottled water handy and ready to go. I conserved water as I prepared lunch, and when I do the dishes and I'll save the water for future use. I wiped the wok out instead of washing it. I'm afraid my neighbor won't fare as well if this lasts too long......furtunately I already had my shower and did a load of laundry earlier this morning. :spns:

We have a couple of 'projects' going on this week . . . To some this might not qualify as prepping, but we decided it was part of it.

We're getting the dogs' teeth cleaned, and any bad ones pulled, because life's easier and readier for us if we're not having to worry about them. We have 3 dogs finished (big girl went in today and didn't need any teeth pulled, but it turned out she needed minor eye surgery so that was done) - 1 more dog to go.

The other project is recycling some junk metal that came out of places we've been remodeling -- aluminum, stainless steel, copper, cast iron. We lugged a 280 lb. cast iron bathtub to the recyclers today, and only got a whole $2.10 for it! :xpnd: We had to ask ourselves if it had been worth the effort! (but at least it's not littering up the landscape, and we have more room now).

Went to the regular supermarket on Mon and got lots of store brand canned veggies -38 cants each, fruit -10 for $10, more TP -2 12 packs scott 1000 sheets for $11, and more pasta-38 cents each. More of the basics.

Yesterday did a good Costco run and spent $200. Got Honey, a case of popcorn 3# of walnuts, a flat of canned corn and green beans, 9 cans cream of mushroom, yoguert, smoothies, coffee, salad dressing, peanut butter, frozen chicken, canned chicken, more bathroom stuff , 800 ct ibuprofen, cold meds and I'm still amazed at 100 tampons for 10 bucks! Can't beat that. Evaporated milk, 8 cans for $6! Got some more stuff I can't remember but I fell good after almost $300 more in preps.

Also went to Brooks for more tealights, 50 for $2, got 200 more. When I was there they had boxes of Emergen-C on clearance for 50% off, so I got 4 more boxes. I guess I've had a good run this week, but can't wait to get back to Costco in a few weeks. So many good deals! For next time, they had 3 100 ct boxes of latex gloves for $10. Got to get some of those!

I can't believe this thread was buried all the way back on page 7!!!! I bought a pair of snow boots for half price the other day. They're the first pair I've had since I was a kid. I couldn't find any in my size for the last 2 years that I've been looking. I finally found these in the kid's section at Walmart! I won't send for any footwear, because I'm so hard to fit and have to try them on. While I was there I got a small bucket of lard. It doesn't have to be refrigerated and will keep a lot better than those darn cardboard Crisco cans. Got more canning jars too. The main reason I went there was to get the #10 cans of Bush's chilli beans, but they don't carry them any more. They were a really good deal compared to the small cans. I have one can left and plan on making a big batch of chilli to can tomorrow. I canned 13 quarts of liver dumplings today. They don't look very much like dumplings though. I don't think I made them firm enough and some of them fell apart. Oh well, they'll still taste good! I also dehydrated two packs of strawberries, celery, parsnips, and more apples, and made 8 more pints of applesauce! I have a bag of lemons in the dehydrator now. Don't know how they'll turn out, but I thought they'd be good to float in a cup of green tea. There has been a produce clearance cart out almost every day this week and I'm forcing myself to get up early to get there first. I'm getting really tired!!:ecrz: I just can't pass up these good deals while I'm still laid off and have the time and energy to take care of the stuff. I've been looking for extra dehydrator trays, but boy are they expensive!! Something like $10 each to order, and not any better on e-bay. I guess I'll have to watch the yard sales. I could kick myself for throwing away my old one when it broke. Those trays may have been the same size as these!!!
