Buffalo Springfield - Stop Children What's That Sound

Released in 1966 the year I was born.
The song is called “For What it’s Worth”, and was written in response to a City of Los Angeles curfew due to riots at the Whiskey A Go Go, I think that summer. I always lIked the line about the signs mostly saying “hooray for our side”. Of course, it aligned with anti-war protests.
Another good line from a BS song is from “Almost Cut My Hair” about “ letting my freak flag fly”. I hear that line once in a while and wonder where that person heard it.

Learn something new everyday, never heard about the LA riots.

Supposedly we were on the eve of destruction 50 years ago? Song is pandering, fear mongering twaddle. I’m old enough to remember when we were about to enter a new ice age and all freeze to death. This garbage sells, but being on the “eve” of something means just about to happen, which didn’t. Sorry to come across in such a negative way, just a nails-on-a-chalkboard song to me ‍

According to my dad, who would have been 80 thisyear, we were on the eve of destruction. He really didn’t talk much about Nam, he did two and a half tours and was there during the evacuations. It was his opinion that we were days away from nuclear war, that Americans didn’t/don’t know the half of what was happening over there. Many that had been in country long enough, especially those that had also served in Korea, were well aware of what was going to happen. It’s one of the evacuations were so messy.

they're rioting in africa
they're starving in spain
there's hurricanes in florida
and texas needs rain

the whole world is festering with unhappy souls
the french hate the germans the germans hate the poles
Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch
And i don't like anybody very much
But we can be thankful and tranquil and proud
That Man's been endowed with the mushroom shaped cloud
And we know for certain that some lovely day
Some one will set the spark off and we will all be blown away

They're rioting in Africa
There's strife in Iran
What nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow man!

Two that describe our world's situation:

Talking Heads - Life During Wartime 3:41

Mike & the Mechanics - Silent Running 6:14
Silent Running strikes a particular chord with me. The night before I left for Viet Nam, I told my Dad that I had left an M-1 Carbine, 5 - 30 rd. magazines and 500 rounds in the basement for him should the need arise. In April of 1968 this was one screwed up country. (Not that it has changed that much)

For a price I'd do about anything except pull the trigger
For that I'd need a pretty good cause
Then I heard of Dr. X, the man with the cure
Just watch the television
Yeah, you'll see there's something going on

Got no love for politicians or that crazy scene in D.C.
It's just a power mad town
But the time is ripe for changes
There's a growing feeling
That taking a chance on a new kind of vision is due

I used to trust the media to tell me the truth, tell us the truth
But now I've seen the payoffs everywhere I look
Who do you trust when everyone's a crook?

Revolution calling!
Revolution calling!
Revolution calling you!
There's a revolution calling!
Revolution calling!
Gotta make a change!
Gotta push, gotta push it on through!

I'm tired of all this bullshit they keep selling me on T.V.
About the communist plan
And all the shady preachers begging for my cash
Swiss bank accounts while giving their secretaries the slam

They're all in Penthouse now
Or Playboy magazine, million dollar stories to tell
I guess Warhol wasn't wrong
Fame fifteen minutes long
Everyone's using everybody, making the sale

I used to think that only America's way, way was right
But now the holy dollar rules everybody's lives
Gotta make a million– doesn't matter who dies!

Revolution calling!
Revolution calling!
Revolution calling you!
There's a revolution calling!
Revolution calling!
Gotta make a change!
Gotta push, gotta push it on through!

Revolution calling!
Revolution calling!
Revolution calling you!
There's a revolution calling!
Revolution calling!

Heading for the classroom yesterday
The kids file through the metal machine
It finds what they may hide
No it just ain't right
A sign of the times
Another church is burning to the ground
Looking for the vandals and they're nowhere to be found
But the hate's alive
A sign of the times, Sign of the times
A sign of the times, Sign of the times
Would someone please let me know how we have spun out of control?
Has the captain let go of the wheel?
Or could we please try to find a way to be a bit more kind?
I see the road to tomorrow in the haze!
On the Senate floor they congregate
Many pockets lined with green,
From those behind the scenes, yeah they take the bribe (it's on the side)
A sign of the times, Sign of the times
A sign of the times, Sign of the times

Thunder - Low Life In High Places

View: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nsPN41VSOVQ&pp=ygUfbG93IGxpZmUgaW4gaGlnaCBwbGFjZXMgdGh1bmRlcg%3D%3D

Mama, tell your children not to go
Down to the city, where the desperate people go
And mama, don't let them stray
They won't find, peace of mind, in such a lonely place

Wannabes and losers, all trying to get a break
They don't give a damn, they'll do whatever it takes
If they climb the ladder, they get to play for higher stakes
That's why there's low life in high places

Mama, things have changed since you were young
When you scream, in the dead of night
Now no one ever comes
And a poor man, he's cast as the villan and a thief
See him down on the street, begging for enough to eat
Waiting on the corner, I saw her waiting for the man
When the limo pulled up I saw what was changing hands
I should've tried to warn her, and make her understand
There is low life in high places
There is low life, like you never even knew
There is low life, and it lives in me and you
But we don't all let it through

Don't let 'em go, you've got to have some pity
Don't you let 'em go
You've got to keep 'em away, from the big bad city

(SOLO)

Waiting on the corner, I saw her waiting for the man
When the limo pulled up I saw what was changing hands
I should've tried to warn her, and make her understand

Mama, tell your children not to go
Down to the city, where the desperate people go
And mama, don't you let them stray
They won't find, peace of mind in such a lonely place

Kent State, National Guard murdered 4 student protestors and injured 9 student protestors.

Kent State Shooting

Four Kent State University students were killed and nine were injured on May 4, 1970, when members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on a crowd gathered to protest the Vietnam War. The tragedy was a watershed moment for a nation divided by the conflict in Southeast Asia. In its immediate aftermath, a student-led strike forced the temporary closure of colleges and universities across the country. Some political observers believe the events of that day in northeast Ohio tilted public opinion against the war and may have contributed to the downfall of President Richard Nixon.

Sad time in America.

Texican....
A good friend of mine was there and had a bullet whiz by him and impact close to the cover he was crouched down by! He has some interesting stories from his time at Kent State.

Wobble, it was an unofficial rule at the time that anytime "Time" was played you had to play Great Gig in the sky, to us it was the end of the song TIME.

We used to drive the DJs crazy by calling them up and telling them that everytime they played Time. Eventually, they just started playing both together.

Here’s a version performed by Neil Young alone. I found this one very powerful.

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVMGKOFIwY

Yeah great song for sure.

Sorry, I've always been a Neil fan. Ever since the 70's. Seen him close to 20 times now. I know a lot of people cant stand him and that's fine. I don't agree with everything he thinks either, as he is very self absorbed. However, he has put out some fantastic grunge rock. He's been a crowd pleaser in his shows with different artists for years.
Fantastic live. Or least years ago.
He and Pearl Jam were a great duo live. Oh the hazy memories of that show.
Going to go see Neil this July. He's old and slow but wtf, taking my son and buddies. Something to tell their kids. They've already seen Roger Waters a couple times as well. Again, an artist that a lot of people don't care for.
But, at the time Pink Floyd was in their heyday, everyone loved him. We are so f**ked now, really.

I personally love listening to anything Tom Petty, Floyd, Zeppelin, the Who. Anything from the 60's to early 80's.
Did I mention the Stones, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Santana, Doobie Brothers? They are also great live and still are. Seen them all too.
.....seen a lot of concerts over the last 45 years.

Are old songs relevant? They sure are!!!
We tend to dislike someone as they go along, for one reason or another but think about it........
Back 40 years ago, no one cared who Roger Waters voted for. It was all about the music. We are losing that connection now.
I know some are dead and some don't tour and some probably shouldn't anymore but once they all die out, that's it.
The next generation will think all the old songs were hate related and artists were racist assholes.
Too bad.
That's why my 25 year old son was introduced to all the past starting at a young age.

Long live Rock and Roll...........

Stratovarius - 4th Reich
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDq0BENYBBE&ab_channel=HardRock%26HeavyMetal

Sign of the times and writings on the wall
They show me it's time has come
Order of a new kind we will all find
Stronger than never before

Things are pretty much the same
Like in the year thirty eight

Oh won't we ever learn
This time isn't gonna be different

So let's all join our hands
And let the children sing
For the last time

4th Reich is rising
Can't you see the signs
4th Reich is rising
For the last time

Let's just press more money
Don't worry about the inflation
We got to have more weapons to carry on
Unemployment and sorrow cannot be avoided at this point

But thins will be so different when they are
Ruling the world

4th Reich is rising
Can't you see the signs
4th Reich is rising
For the last time
What will be left to our children

Is this our final destiny

Was that released nationally, or was that local to New Orleans?

Cuz it was all the rage on Louisiana radio stations, but I have never even found a non-Louisianian who knew the tune was even, ever recorded…
They played it in Mississippi, and it was revived in California with Iraq instead of Iran during the first Gulf War - I have no idea who did that.

Around 1986, I was at an Irish Pub in Boulder, Colorado, when the live band sang this piece for the evening. In a nearby seat, alone, was a middle-aged man with long hair, a beard, and that haunted look. The one that says, "I am a Vietnam Vet," is something that my generation learned to recognize.

The performance itself was one of the most amazing I have ever heard, a song that is often done "wrong" and is easily made fun of. But this version by the lead singer was that perfect blend of remorse, anger, and sorrow. The man at the table stared at him.

But when it got to that last verse, he sang, "What are They Marching for, and I ask myself the same Question."

The man at the table banged down his beer, nearly shattering the glass, and burst into heart-breaking sobs, screaming, "That's what They Did, Damn Them! Damn Them! - WHAT FOR?"!

I have never forgotten that; I still get chills...the singer paused and then finished the last bit quietly singing, "Watzing Matilda, Watzing Matilda, Who'll Go a Watzing Matilda for Me..."

This version comes close to the performance I heard that night: 6 minutes 24 seconds
