First African-American on U.S. Coin

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Jazz legend Duke Ellington is the first African-American to appear on an American coin, the U.S. Mint says in introducing the latest in its line of state-themed quarters.

The District of Columbia commemorative quarter showing Ellington playing the piano will be introduced by U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy at a news conference Tuesday at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Ellington won the honor by a vote of D.C. residents, beating out abolitionist Frederick Douglass and astronomer Benjamin Banneker.

Also on the coin is the phrase "justice for all." The mint rejected the first inscription choice of D.C. voters, which was "taxation without representation," in protest of the District's lack of voting representation in Congress.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington received 13 Grammy Awards and was a pioneer in jazz, according to his official Web site.

Ellington was born in the District and composed more than 3,000 songs, including the notable "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," a song that helped usher in the swing era of jazz.

Ellington performed with other famous artists, including John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, and he traveled around the world with his orchestras.
He died in 1974 at age 75.

I'll give you an historic first. It is Pat Buchanon speaking truth about race relations RIGHT NOW. I no longer give a damn about the Edgar Meavons or Rosa Parks or anything that happened half a century ago.

My heart goes out to all the women and men and children suffering NOW from the violence and hatred and rampant racism people like you are enabling by not speaking out and screaming the horrors that our people are suffering NOW because of racism.

As for racism, its ugliest manifestation is in interracial crime, and especially interracial crimes of violence.. Is Barack Obama aware that while white criminals choose black victims 3 percent of the time, black criminals choose white victims 45 percent of the time?

Is Barack aware that black-on-white rapes are 100 times more common than the reverse, that black-on-white robberies were 139 times as common in the first three years of this decade as the reverse?

We have all heard ad nauseam from the Rev. Al about Tawana Brawley, the Duke rape case and Jena . And all turned out to be hoaxes. But about the epidemic of black assaults on whites that are real, we hear nothing.

Sorry, Barack, some of us have heard it all before, about 40 years and 40 trillion tax dollars ago...

Sorry to learn of your disdain for history. It explains a whole lot. If we do not learn the lessons of history, we are continually bound to repeat those mistakes over and over and over again.

And putting an entertainer's face on a quarter helps how? It could as well be Oprah or Michael Jordan since they're all negro entertainers. I know libs are all about the symbolism, but walk me through this...

Numismatists will go for them. I'm not a collector, but I know people who are.

I am, however, so sick of this race thing. Don't care if Duke Ellington was GREEN, it's his MUSIC that gets him in the hall of fame, not his damn skin color.

The race crap, just STFU. Better yet, go see Eric Holder.

yes

and you are the living example of that right here. Wallowing in self guilt and self rightiousness over events getting on near a hundred years ago and that neither you nor I took part in and totally ignoring the reality of racism right now today.

HUNDREDS of white women are raped EVERY WEEK by blacks as acts of hatred, violence, and racism. Have I ever seen you get on one of the threads that have discussed that and other horrors and decry the violence, even as a woman caring about other women ala feminism?

Not once. You couldn't care less about reality and real crime taking place today. Don't talk to me of history when the reality of it is taking place right now hurting real people who are suffering RIGHT NOW not in your politically correct santioned version of reality from decades and decades ago.

Thousands of people are murdered each year by racists in this country NOW. You want me to feel sorry for segregrated bathrooms and restaurants decades ago when I know about the mass rapes and mass murders, in their thousands taking place with my fellow citizens today?

Time for this brainwashing to stop, time for people to stand up and speak out for the victims of today, and only when the truth is well known from one end of this country to the other will the people demand a stop to it.

I was inside a larger US Post Office yesterday and had the time to pay attention to the merchadise for sale, hanging on the walls and in display cases, etc. a really nice, handsome mahogany-framed 16x24 photos & PR happy-piece highlighting the life of Malcom X , and only $49.95 at discount ! How nice. The racist radical has been rehabilitated and served up "suitable for framing", paid for with our tax dollars.

Far be it from me to stick up for black racist scumbags, but if I remember correctly Malcolm X had something of an epiphany late in life.

It seems he went on the pilgrimage muslims are supposed to go on, once in their lives if they're able. It was there he saw muslims of all races, including "blue-eyed debbil" muslims.

He recanted much of his "kill whitey" bullshit, which may have resulted in his death.

Some people actually think ol' Calypso Looie might have had something to do with that. (in between his many visits to the "mother ship")

To be honest, if I had to choose which political figure from the last 60 years to put up on the wall, I'd sooner put Malcolm X on the wall than Obama, either Bush, Clinton, Carter, et al. At least the man told his people to get their heads out their asses and fend for themselves. Just like everybody else has to do. I give him credit for that.

I'd certainly wear an 'X' hat before any kind of Zero memorabilia. Not that I'd wear an 'X' hat. LOL

LONEWOLF,

You got me to thinking - why no images of Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Sitting Bull or others like them? Seriously, as far as I know they were principled leaders who stood up and lead against impossible odds. That's much more inspiring than a musician of any color...

God has a plan, Trust it!
Actually, he isnt the first. York, a slave who was depicted on a Missouri quarter alongside explorers Lewis and Clark, was the first, and there have been several african-american's depicted on commorative US coins.

Well, for one reason we do not make full-sized silver dollars anymore and no other coins is large enough to bear their proud visages...anyway, let them keep putting every person and cartoon character on their Monopoly moneu and leave the heroes off.

You're correct about all of that. I only put "RACE" to get people's attention. Sorry. It's the P T Barnum in me. But, beyond that, there have been many persons of all "colors" who should be honored. It's just that some people's colors have traditionally been honored over others. That's all.
