List of active coal-fired power stations in the United Kingdom - Wikipedia
Name, location, energy co, date started, date closed
West Burton A, Nottinghamshire, EDF Energy, 1967[14], To be decommissioned from September 2022[15]
Kilroot, County Antrim, EPH, 1981[14], 2023 To be converted to natural gas in time for 2023 capacity market.
Ratcliffe on Soar, Nottinghamshire, Uniper, 1968[14], September 2024[16] One of the four units will be closed earlier than the rest of the power station with a plan to close this unit by September 2022.[17]

UK will be losing 4GW of power generation capacity by the time summer hits. This will not end well.

Sorry the whitespace will not transfer properly.

Natural gas total capacity right now is at 30.24GW

Nuclear power is at 6.83GW with one closure of their oldest plant this year(840MW)

And they have closed 6.554GW in generating nuclear power plants since 89. Nuclear is a veritible maintenance nightmare as plants age so operational costs with age get expensive.

Odds are they are planning to replace it, but due to xxx or yyy it will be 3-5 years government time before it can be done. In real time it will be 20-30 years and you had better get used to being cold or hot, depending upon the season.

It just came up as a discussion point at work and I dug into things and found all this out. This does explain the non agression nature of ukraine/russia interactions.

I am not neccessarily a fan of decentralized power grid setups. They are more prone to sabotage and failure. That is what appears to be the case with the natural gas plants as only one tops 2GW the rest average around either .4GW or .8GW with a handful of some nearing 1 or 2 GW.

The only issue with natural gas is that if things get toooo cold things stop flowing.

"Upcoming energy crisis for Brittain"

Spelling Nazi: That's spelled "Britain." Unless, of course, you meant Brittain, West Virginia or Brittain, Ohio.

In a tangential comment regarding energy and the UK, I was surprised by a throwaway comment in a recent news report about how Trump had put tariffs on aluminum from the UK (which I gather Biden has recently rescinded?). Refining aluminum takes a relatively enormous amount of energy and in general energy in Europe is very expensive, so my mental eyebrows went up at the thought that the UK is apparently a minor aluminum producing powerhouse. Who knew?

The power issue is why recycling aluminum is so efficient and more profitable than refining from raw bauxite ore.
