I thought since this is Canada, it might warrant it's own thread.

Two patients at separate Ontario hospitals are currently being tested for Ebola after travel from West Africa.

The Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus is currently testing a person for the deadly virus, it said in a release.

The person arrived at the hospital on Sunday and was immediately placed in isolation.

Test results are expected later Monday.

“All necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of other patients, visitors and hospital staff. Strict infection prevention and control measures in Ontario hospitals means the risk of Ebola to other patients and health care workers is minimal,” said Dr. Jonathan Angel, the hospital’s Infectious Disease Specialist.

Dr. Isra Levy, the Medical Officer of Health at Ottawa Public Health, also tried to calm fears surrounding the virus.

“It’s important for the public to know that Ebola virus disease spreads only through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. It is not an airborne infection and cannot be spread through casual contact,” Dr.Levy said.

A male patient at Quinte Health Care Hospital (QHC) in Belleville is also being tested, the hospital confirmed.

That person fell ill after recently returning from Sierra Leone.

“Although the patient has recently returned from West Africa and has some symptoms common with the Ebola virus, it is highly unlikely that this patient will test positive for Ebola,” the hospital said in a release.

QHC Chief of Staff Dr. Dick Zoutman said the patient had a short stopover in West Africa and was not exposed to any ill people during that time.

“However, since we cannot immediately rule out Ebola, we are taking the conservative approach and sending a sample out for testing at the National Microbiology lab in Winnipeg,” he said.

Results are expected over the next 24-36 hours.

Did I miss something? How did they both arrive, commercial or private carrier and when?

I wish I had more confidence about this bit of PR.

Why is it that this guy showed up in your hospital? What kind of symptoms? If there were any symptoms at all, what kind of protective gear was your team wearing?

Can someone send Dr Levy a copy of that study that proves he's talking out of his... er, rear orifice? Damn, I'm getting sick of this baloney being spewed!

If it was airborne like regular influenza, You'd think there would be millions of cases already. Personally, I do not believe it is. Can you technically catch it by walking into a room where someone sneezed a few minutes ago? Maybe. But it's definitively not as contagious as influenza, not by a long shot.

Correct, Patrick. If it was truly AIRBORNE then there SHOULD be a lot more cases. There is enough research to show that it is likely that one CAN become infected via AEROSOL DROPLETS which is way different than AIRBORNE.

Out of all the documented cases of "how they caught Ebola" which is well documented for the original 20 Ebola outbreaks since 1976, and many during the current outbreak, the vast majority 95%+ were DIRECT CONTACT WITH BODILY FLUIDS, or eating or contact with EBOLA INFECTED BUSH MEAT, or MEDICAL MISTAKES mainly in the area of re-use of syringes by local medical people in Africa. There are only a handful of cases where the method of transmission is "unknown" and thus COULD be due to contact with Ebola on surfaces or fomites or via aerosol droplets.
